TIPS FOR LIVING GOLDEN Special Nutrient Needs of Older Adults Eating right and staying fit are important no matter what your age. As we get older our bodies have different needs, so certain nutrients become especially important for good health. MAR-APR 2015 Calcium and Vitamin D Older adults need more calcium and vitamin D to help maintain bone health. Have three servings of vitamin D-fortified lowfat or fat-free milk or yogurt each day. Other calcium-rich foods include fortified cereals and fruit juices, dark green leafy vegetables and canned fish with soft bones. If you take a calcium supplement or multivitamin, choose one that contains vitamin D. Vitamin B12 Many people older than 50 do not get enough vitamin B12. Fortified cereal, lean meat and some fish and seafood are sources of vitamin B12. Ask your doctor or a registered dietitian nutritionist if you need a vitamin B12 supplement. Fiber Eat more fiber-rich foods to stay regular. Fiber also can help lower your risk for heart disease, control your weight and prevent Type 2 diabetes. Eat whole-grain breads and cereals, and more beans and peas — along with fruits and vegetables which also provide fiber. Potassium Increasing potassium along with reducing sodium (salt) may lower your risk of high blood pressure. Fruits, vegetables and low-fat or fatfree milk and yogurt are good sources of potassium. Also, select and prepare foods with little or no added salt. Know Your Fats Foods that are low in saturated fats and trans fat help reduce your risk of heart disease. Most of the fats you eat should be polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Check the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels for total fat and saturated fat. Spring is a wonderful time for new beginnings and change. Plants are sprouting, outdoor activity is more prevalent, and we welcome the kiss and warmth of the sun on our bodies. It's all the more reason to try something new this season. Why not try a totally new exercise class, experiment with healthier eating and find it tastes good, take a hike to a place you have never been before, of course with a companion or group, allow yourself time for your mind to escape in a novel, change your exercise routine and excite your muscles to work in a different way which will avoid the “plateaus.” Also, make a new friend or say hello to a neighbor in exercise class. It's amazing how well you'll feel after you did! A special WELCOME to the following new members who joined from January 1 - February 26, 2015! May we introduce ... Leisa Kercher We love meeting our new fitness friends at Body Zone. We recently had the pleasure to learn more about Leisa Kercher, new BZ SilverSneakers member and a Zumba fanatic. We asked her to share a few personal tidbits and here's what she had to say: “From tap at age five to Zumba at age sixty-five, dance has always been my passion. I was fortunate to have had a successful career with the Reading Bureau of Recreation and various organizations developing, choreographing and teaching fitness based dance to the youth and adult residents of our city. Hosting and instructing dance programs on local cable television not only showcased the talent of our inner city teens (remember the Breakdance craze?) but spread the message throughout the greater Berks community that no matter what your age or gender, keeping healthy and fit could be accomplished through dance. As I was getting older, I realized more than ever that I needed to take control and make my own fitness/wellness a top priority. Zumba was the perfect fit for me. Kudos to BZ for its incredible Zumba program. Presently, I dance four mornings a week and I plan to add one or two of the evening classes this spring. BZ instructors are phenomenal. Each has her own unique style, and nuance. I am inspired by them all. I just add a bit of "personal flair" to those Latin/pop beats and voila! ... One of the best hours of my day.” Thank you! Special thanks to Todd Knorr and Colleen Murphy Zeppos, physical therapists from Commonwealth Orthopaedic Associates for their outstanding presentation on balance and strength training at February's LunchBunch!
