20 Years of Living BOLD
A Community Impact Report
A Message from Our President
It’s hard to imagine it’s been 20 years since the first kids signed up to be part of Bolder
Options. In that first year, we had just six kids matched with mentors in a three-month
running program. In 2014, we engaged over 2,700 youth in the Twin Cities and Rochester
through mentoring, tutoring, health & wellness programming, youth triathlons, and
motivational speaking. It’s the contributions of many – both through financial donations
and volunteer time – that have made that possible. Our thanks to those many volunteers
who together logged over 20,000 hours of time which is equivalent to $557,000 in
economic contributions1 to our organization!
And that hard work is paying off. We evaluate our programming and outcomes to monitor
Bolder Options’ impact… and then make improvements accordingly. The results are both
exciting and rewarding. Consider:
•
90 percent of Bolder Options youth report they feel good about themselves
•
87 percent of caregivers report an increase in their child’s physical activity
•
86 percent of Bolder Options youth report they are getting better grades
•
Over 95 percent of Bolder Options youth set and achieve their goals
Each and every day I’ve seen the difference Bolder Options has made on kids, families,
and the community — and I believe we can, and must, do much more to ensure that all
kids are supported by caring adults, as they choose healthy habits and set BOLD goals.
Thank you for your support in helping us achieve our goals and mission of teaching youth
to succeed in ALL of life’s races!
Darrell Thompson

About Bolder Options
Bolder Options is an innovative organization focused on healthy
youth development. The comprehensive mentoring program,
wellness activities and leadership opportunities coordinate
family, community, school and county resources in a united effort
to support youth who are at-risk for dropping out of school or
becoming involved in delinquent or unhealthy behaviors. Bolder
Options engages youth and mentors in goal setting, physical
activity, tutoring and community involvement to build confidence,
maximize potential, and encourage healthy life skills.
Our Mission
Teaching youth to succeed in ALL of life’s races.
Our Vision
Bolder Options is committed to building a community of caring
relationships in support of our youth.
Bolder Options recognizes the importance of continual
evaluation in order to monitor its impact and make improvements
accordingly. As such, we evaluate outcomes in five key areas:
physical health, social/emotional health, pro-social behavior,
academic success and program satisfaction. Three major
stakeholders are evaluated throughout the course of their
involvement with Bolder Options: youth, mentors, and caregivers.
In order to gain a comprehensive picture of Bolder Options’
effectiveness, our evaluation utilizes pre- and post-program
surveys for all youth and post-program surveys for mentors
and caregivers. See our achievements on the next page of this
community impact report.

Thank You, Mentors
According to recent study by the National Mentoring Partnership,
nationally 1.8 million at-risk youth are in a mentoring relationship
through a mentoring program, and another 4.1 million at-risk
youth have informal mentoring relationships. Even though the
number of mentors has grown since the 1990s, one in three
people surveyed still did not have a mentor while growing up.
In Minnesota alone, there are more than 270,000 youth who
could benefit from a positive mentoring relationship. At Bolder
Options, we know that our mentors are making a positive impact
on the youth we serve. Yes, we are always looking for more
mentors – from all walks of life. But to those individuals who now
give of their time and talents for our programs it is important to
say – you are making an incredibly beneficial impact on youth of
all ages and backgrounds.
We say a big Bolder Options BOLD thank you to those

Thank You, Donors
Organizations and individuals from across the Twin Cities
metropolitan area provide critical financial resources that allow
Bolder Options to continually expand its work. Additionally, each
year, Bolder Options is the recipient of many volunteer hours
through the investment of time and talents of its supporting
corporate donors and individual volunteers at its events. GE Fleet
Services is a perfect example of that. This year, staff volunteered
their time shopping, decorating and cooking for our annual
graduation event. Continuing its giving generosity, the company
not only worked with Bolder Options staff on key training
initiatives in change management but they made a financial
contribution as well through their corporate grant program.
We offer a BOLD thank you to all our corporate and individual
donors whose contributions are integral parts in helping our
organization meet our mission of teaching youth to succeed in

When Courtney Erickson talks about

her two-year relationship with mentee

Mylan, she says, “I don’t know how we can

be more right for one another!” As a hair

choice, Courtney learned about Bolder
Options from a client, who was a teacher.
Staff
With his encouragement, Courtney began
Darrell Thompson, President
a mentoring relationship with Mylan
Kari Davis, Chief Operating Officer
that includes the physical, nutritional
Becky Reichel, Program Director
and academic programming that Bolder
Heidi Mastrud, Advancement Director
Options is known for. But, according to
Sandi Williams, Executive Assistant
Courtney, it also includes time spent
Elysia Bires, Health & Wellness Coordinator
together doing their nails, getting their

hair done and just simply dancing! “We
Natalie Koness, Mentoring Coordinator, Minneapolis
are very comfortable with one another
Thomas Rakow-Pare, Mentoring Coordinator, St. Paul
and our relationship keeps evolving,” says
Jasmine Sánchez, Volunteer Coordinator, Twin Cities
Courtney. “I’ve seen Mylan grow from a

young girl to a young woman.”

Bolder Thoughts
“I’m so proud of my colleagues - they are a group of dedicated people
who really care about the relationships they build with mentors,
youth and caregivers.”
