SM 20 Years of Living BOLD A Community Impact Report A Message from Our President It’s hard to imagine it’s been 20 years since the first kids signed up to be part of Bolder Options. In that first year, we had just six kids matched with mentors in a three-month running program. In 2014, we engaged over 2,700 youth in the Twin Cities and Rochester through mentoring, tutoring, health & wellness programming, youth triathlons, and motivational speaking. It’s the contributions of many – both through financial donations and volunteer time – that have made that possible. Our thanks to those many volunteers who together logged over 20,000 hours of time which is equivalent to $557,000 in economic contributions1 to our organization! And that hard work is paying off. We evaluate our programming and outcomes to monitor Bolder Options’ impact… and then make improvements accordingly. The results are both exciting and rewarding. Consider: • 90 percent of Bolder Options youth report they feel good about themselves • 87 percent of caregivers report an increase in their child’s physical activity • 86 percent of Bolder Options youth report they are getting better grades • Over 95 percent of Bolder Options youth set and achieve their goals Each and every day I’ve seen the difference Bolder Options has made on kids, families, and the community — and I believe we can, and must, do much more to ensure that all kids are supported by caring adults, as they choose healthy habits and set BOLD goals. Thank you for your support in helping us achieve our goals and mission of teaching youth to succeed in ALL of life’s races! Darrell Thompson President, Bolder Options 1 Based on a calculation of $24.83 per hour, The Value of Volunteer Time, The Independent Sector www.independentsector.org/volunteer_time About Bolder Options Bolder Options is an innovative organization focused on healthy youth development. The comprehensive mentoring program, wellness activities and leadership opportunities coordinate family, community, school and county resources in a united effort to support youth who are at-risk for dropping out of school or becoming involved in delinquent or unhealthy behaviors. Bolder Options engages youth and mentors in goal setting, physical activity, tutoring and community involvement to build confidence, maximize potential, and encourage healthy life skills. Our Mission Teaching youth to succeed in ALL of life’s races. Our Vision Bolder Options is committed to building a community of caring relationships in support of our youth. Bolder Options recognizes the importance of continual evaluation in order to monitor its impact and make improvements accordingly. As such, we evaluate outcomes in five key areas: physical health, social/emotional health, pro-social behavior, academic success and program satisfaction. Three major stakeholders are evaluated throughout the course of their involvement with Bolder Options: youth, mentors, and caregivers. In order to gain a comprehensive picture of Bolder Options’ effectiveness, our evaluation utilizes pre- and post-program surveys for all youth and post-program surveys for mentors and caregivers. See our achievements on the next page of this community impact report. 270,000 Youth in Minnesota Could Benefit from Mentoring! Bolder Thoughts “My mentor earned my trust.
