Music Moves will celebrate MUSIC THERAPY Music activates, inspires and stimulates emotional expression. Music relaxes, calms the nervous system and helps restore internal balance. Music connects us to ourselves and others. Music is life affirming. Music Therapy is an evidenced-based clinical discipline where music is used to effect positive change and foster creative expression in children and adults. In addition to achieving clinical goals and improving social functioning of those with special needs, people who desire to expand their lives and explore issues through creative expression are also good candidates for music therapy. Whether working one-on-one or in a group setting, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music offers music therapy for clients to grow through the transformative experience of making music in relationship with a trained music therapist. Our credentialed music therapists play music with clients using improvisation and specific music interventions to address client needs and goals. We Offer • • • • Onsite Music Therapy Early Intervention Program Outreach Music Therapy Therapeutic Music Lessons With the support of grants and individual donations, the program is able to offer subsidized music therapy to most of the participating individuals, all of whom have emotional, development and physical challenges. The program works with over 1000 students in 28 schools, social service agencies and community organizations throughout New York City. “We have been coming to this school for nearly 10 years. My special needs son could barely speak at that time. Now he is able to express himself with the help of the amazing therapists and teachers in this music therapy program.” Joeretta Washington “The music brought him back to a familiar place and helped motivate him to participate in therapy and heal.” Cheryl Boucher Mother of a child who suffered a paralyzing brain assault Community Outreach Music Partners The Conservatory created Music Partners in 1988 in response to a critical need in the community – the rising number of New York City public schools offering no music instruction. Today Music Partners offers subsidized, comprehensive, and sequential music instruction at little or no cost to nearly 5,000 individuals in 32 schools, Head Start programs and at senior centers throughout New York City. Programs include band, strings, chorus, world drumming and percussion, guitar, ukulele, recorder, and early childhood movement and music. Music Partner students represent 42 nationalities and speak more than 30 languages and dialects. Additionally, 65% of these students are AfricanAmerican, Hispanic/Latino or Asian and live at or below the poverty line.
