SPECIAL ENGINEERING STEELS
WITH UNIQUE STRENGTHS
BUDERUS EDELSTAHL — QUALITY FROM A SINGLE SOURCE:
The entire production process, from melting through to production of the end product, takes place at the Wetzlar site. This
also applies for our high-quality special engineering steels. We
melt the initial material from high-quality scrap steel in our
own steel plant and forge the ingots in the open die forging
process on our hydraulic presses with a compression force of
up to 100 MN. The heat treatment and quality check also take
place directly on-site. All production steps are precisely coordinated. This saves time, makes the product handover easier
and makes us flexible and reliable. The short communication
paths between quality assurance, production planning, production and sales enable smooth order processing.
The expectations of our customers have the highest priority
at every stage. As a competent partner, we are available for
all application queries and work with our customers to find
suitable solutions for specific requirements. We produce triedand-tested standard products, as well as individual steels, which
we develop according to the specifications of our customers.
Small batch sizes are no problem for us. The success of Buderus
Edelstahl is based on a high level of flexibility, reliability and
service, as well as on a transparent materials management
and quality assurance system.

SHORT LEAD TIMES
Special engineering steel from Buderus Edelstahl has a wide
range of uses in gear manufacturing and rolling bearing production, mining, in the oil and gas industry, in the energy sector,
as well as in other general areas of mechanical engineering.
Our customers value the reliability of our case hardening and
tempered steels in particular — especially in difficult conditions
such as those encountered in the field of large gear unit production. With the case hardening steel 18CrNiMo7-6, for example,
we offer a high-purity steel, which is the ideal choice for gear
wheels and gear parts. Our nickel alloy steels with a nickel content
of up to three percent can withstand the highest strains in drill
heads and pump housings.
Our concept for large gear unit production is based on forging
complete bars instead of single forgings. This not only optimizes
production costs, but also increases quality at the same time.
We deliver bars in standard production lengths or fixed lengths,
as well as disks sawn off the bar with a diameter of up to
1,550 mm. We can also fulfill customer requests at short notice:
We stock the most common special engineering steel grades
and dimensions in our store — in either raw forged, rough turned
and/or rough turned and pre-drilled state.
IN-HOUSE MELTING
With a furnace capacity of 100 to, Buderus Edelstahl melts its
raw materials in its own electric steel plant. For this, we use
high-quality scrap steel from the recycling cycles in Germany
and Europe. After tapping, the steel is deoxidized and degassed
in the secondary metallurgy process (LF-VD/VOD plant) and
either deep desulphurized or set to a controlled sulphur content
depending on the requirements. We bottom-cast the special
steel in moulds with hot top insulation to ingots weighing between
2.8 and 190 to.
The benefits of our special engineering steel:
excellent micro- and macroscopic degree of purity
low level of trace elements
low segregation
narrow tolerance limits
Our open die forging plant is equipped with high-performance
presses with forces of 20 MN, 55 MN and 80/ 100 MN. Here, we
forge ingots up to an operating weight of 190 to. The subsequent
heat treatment takes place in shuttle kilns or continuous kilns.
Our deep hole drilling bench can achieve holes up to 13 m deep.
On the lathes, we process weights of up to 120 to, diameters
up to 2,100 mm and lengths of up to 17 m. Our wide range of saws
enable us to cut through bars up to a diameter range of
2,000 x 2,000 mm.

CERTIFIED TESTING
Our own melting plant, state-of-the-art ladle metallurgy, casting
of ingots and process-controlled production steps guarantee
the high quality standard of the special engineering steel from
Buderus Edelstahl. And we also monitor the quality of the special
engineering steel meticulously. Our quality assurance system
specifies all quality-relevant process steps and inspection points
in detail. Each production step is checked precisely and documented clearly — from the melting of the steel through to the
forming processes and delivery. The integrated management
system at Buderus Edelstahl GmbH is certified in accordance
with ISO 9001, ISO/ TS 16949 and ISO 14001.
In addition to the traditional material tests, such as tensile tests,
hardness tests, structure and purity level tests in accordance
with national and international standards, we also check fracturemechanical parameters (e. g. KIC), carry out impact tests
according to Brugger and conduct tests with the scanning
electron microscope and EDX/WDX analyses in our testing
laboratory. The testing laboratory is certified by “Deutsche
Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS)” in accordance with
DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025.
The sawn plates of the gear steel 18CrNiMo7-6 achieve the
highest purity levels thanks to our quasi-isotropic material
properties and comply with the DNV High Grade quality. This
has been certified by “Det Norske Veritas”. The outstanding
quality of this steel has also been certified by “Germanischer
Lloyd”.
