An Introduction : Palestine & Baitul Maqdis
Palestine Land and Its Location
Palestine's geographical area has varied greatly over the centuries, as
the land was conquered repeatedly by the great empires that came to
power in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Israel, the West Bank and
the Gaza Strip, and parts of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria were once part of
Palestine.
The Gaza Strip is a narrow sliver of land about eighteen miles long
(twenty-nine kilometers)and five miles wide (eight kilometers) on the
Mediterranean Sea between Egypt and Israel. It is mostly flat and sandy,
with little fertile soil. The West Bank is about ninety miles long (onehundred-forty-five kilometers) and thirty miles wide (forty-eight
kilometers) and is surrounded on all sides by Israel except to the east,
where it abuts the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. The West Bank is fertile
in the north and mostly barren in the south.
The estimated 2012 population of Gaza was 1,710,257,
approximately 99.5 percent of whom were Palestinian Arab. The West Bank
estimate was 2,622,544, with approximately 83 percent Palestinian Arab
and 17 percent Jewish.
Baitul Maqdis and Its Significant in Islam
Al-Quds or Baitul Maqdis is the city of Jerusalem
which brings the meaning of „ The Noble, Sacred
Place‟. It is perhaps the only city in the world that is
historically and spiritually significant to Muslims, Jews
and Christians. Al-Aqsa has dominated the skyline and
the life of the Holy City. For the past 20 years, its very
existence has been threatened
Center of Monotheism – Baitul Maqdis is well-known as the Land of Prophets such as Prophet Ibrahim,
Musa, Daud, Sulaiman and Isa A.S. They all taught the Oneness of Allah SWT.
First Qiblah for Muslims – It was Masjidil Aqsa in Jerusalem the first qiblah , the place towards which
Muslims turn in prayer. Prophet Muhammad SAW was instructed to change the qibla from Jerusalem
to Mecca after 16 months of Hijrah.
Site of Isra‟ and Mi‟raj – Prophet Muhammad SAW again visited Jerusalem during Isra‟ and Mi‟raj. The
event of Isra‟ and Mi‟raj is recorded in the Quran in Surah Al-Isra‟.
Palestine was brought under Muslim control at the time of the Second CaliphUmar alKhattab.Umar then rewarded the land to Muslims on 636 M/15H. The trust to preserve the Palestine
land is acquired by the Caliphs of Islam interchangeably until the last Ottoman Caliphate fall in 1924.
Baitul Maqdis was attacked and conquered by the Crusaders in Crusade War against Muslims.
Over 70,000 Muslims were massacred in Masjidil Aqsa, lived under the oppressions of the crusaders.
However, Muslim warlord Sultan Salahuddin Al-Ayubi has succeeded in liberating Palestine from the
Crusaders after 91 years.
Until today, Baitul Maqdis and Masjidil Aqsa is being conquered by the Zionist/Israel since 1967.
Let us unite with the connection of Islam and Iman in order to defend and liberate the Muslim‟s sacred
land, Palestine.
