WELCOME TO ST JOHN’S, CALGARY, especially if you are a visitor
or newcomer. Founded in 1905 as an Anglican parish, we were received
into the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church in 2011. We
are a parish of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter, a new
structure of the Catholic Church established by Pope Benedict XVI as a
result of his Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum cœtibus, which allows
for former Anglicans to enter the Catholic Church whilst maintaining
elements of their theological, spiritual, and liturgical patrimony.
St John’s is a friendly, family-oriented and welcoming community of traditional Catholic faith
and practice, as reflected in our liturgy, music and preaching. We exist to worship God in the
triune majesty of the Blessed Trinity, drawing all men and women into deepest communion
with him through his Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and in the power and
fellowship of the Holy Spirit. If you are new, please introduce yourself to us.
HOLY MASS. On Sundays Mass is offered according to Divine Worship at 10 a.m. (Solemn
Sung or High) or 5 p.m. (Low, with hymns). Daily Masses are offered: Monday 7 p.m., Tuesday
11.30 a.m., Wednesday 10.30 a.m., Thursday to Saturday at 11.30 a.m.
MATTINS & EVENSONG are said, in Quire, on Sundays at 8.30 a.m. & 4 p.m.
CONFESSIONS are on Sundays between 9 and 9.30 a.m., and after every weekday Mass.
PASTORAL CARE. We ask to be informed immediately of those who are sick in hospital or
at home in order that appropriate pastoral arrangements can be made.

Upon reaching the Sanctuary, the Celebrant kneels. All remain standing. The Vidi Aquam is intoned.
The Celebrant sprinkles the Altar, himself, and then stands to sprinkle the Servers, and Choir. He then
proceeds through church sprinkling the people with holy water to remind them of their Baptism. All
make the Sign of the Cross when sprinkled.

Following the Vidi Aquam the Celebrant changes his cope for the chasuble, the priestly Mass outer
vestment. The Prayers at the Foot of the Altar are recited by the Celebrant and Servers. The Altar is then
incensed. Meanwhile, the Choir begins the Introit proper to the Mass of the day.

The Celebrant kisses the Altar and turns to the people to sing the salutation. He then goes to the Epistle

through our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

GOD, who on this day didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people by

RETHREN: No one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are
varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working,
but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is
given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For just as
the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many,
are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptised into one body –

We now prepare for the Gospel, wherein we hear the words and actions of Our Lord. The Celebrant goes
to the Altar and incense is blessed, to show reverence for the Gospel. The Celebrant bows low before the
Altar to ask for God’s blessing. Meanwhile the Gradual Hymn is sung, followed by the Sequence and
Alleluia, as the Gospel procession makes its way to the nave.

taught us to make prayers and supplications and to give thanks for all
men: We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to receive these our
prayers which we offer unto thy divine majesty, beseeching thee to inspire
continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity and
concord; and grant that all they that do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of
thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love.
Give grace, O heavenly Father, to Francis our Pope, Jeffrey our Ordinary, and to all

– THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST –
The Altar is now prepared. Bread and wine are brought to the Celebrant in procession. The Celebrant
prepares the Altar and blesses incense. He hallows the gifts for the sacrifice. He next incenses the Crucifix
above the Altar, and finally the Altar itself. The Servers, Choir, and finally the people, are all then
incensed, so that all may take their part in offering the sacrifice to God.

The PRAYER over the OFFERINGS
RANT, WE PRAY, O LORD, that, as promised by thy Son, the Holy Spirit
may reveal to us more abundantly the hidden mystery of this sacrifice and
graciously lead us into all truth. Through Christ our Lord.
The Eucharistic Prayer of praise and thanksgiving is the centre and high point of the whole celebration.
The congregation joins Christ in acknowledging the works of God and in offering his sacrifice to the

The CANON of the MASS (kneel)
The Celebrant continues with the Canon of the Mass, with a petition for the acceptance of the sacrifice:
HEREFORE, MOST MERCIFUL FATHER, we humbly pray thee,
through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, and we ask, that thou accept
and bless these gifts, these offerings, these holy and unblemished
sacrifices. We offer them unto thee, first, for thy holy Catholic
Church: that thou vouchsafe to keep her in peace, to guard, unite,
and govern her throughout the whole world; together with thy
servant Francis our Pope, Jeffrey our Ordinary, and all the faithful guardians of the
Catholic and Apostolic faith.
The Celebrant now prays for all the living:
Remember, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids (the Celebrant pauses briefly in silent
prayer) and all who here around us stand, whose faith is known unto thee and their
steadfastness manifest, on whose behalf we offer unto thee, or who themselves offer unto
thee this sacrifice of praise; for themselves, and for all who are theirs; for the redemption
of their souls, for the hope of their health and well-being; and who offer their prayers

He now prays in communion with Our Lady and all the Saints:
United in one communion, we celebrate the most sacred day of Pentecost, whereon the
Holy Spirit appeared to the Apostles in tongues innumerable; we venerate moreover the
memory, first, of the glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of the same our God and Lord
Jesus Christ; of Joseph her spouse; as also of thy blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter and

He now offers a petition for peace and salvation:

and from thy whole family: we present it unto thee on behalf also of those whom thou
hast vouchsafed to regenerate by water and the Holy Spirit, granting unto them
remission of all their sins; order thou our days in thy peace, and bid us to be delivered
from eternal damnation, and to be numbered in the fold of thine elect.
He invokes the holiness of God to hallow the offerings:
Vouchsafe, O God, we beseech thee, in all things to make this oblation blessed,
approved and accepted, a perfect and worthy offering; that it may become for us the
Body and Blood of thy dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
The account of Our Lord’s words and actions at the Last Supper is the very heart of the Canon of the
Mass, during which the bread and the wine are consecrated to become the Body and Blood of the Lord:
Who the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands, and with
eyes lifted up to heaven, unto thee, God, his almighty Father, giving thanks to thee, he
blessed, broke and gave it to his disciples, saying:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT: FOR THIS IS MY BODY WHICH
WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
The Celebrant elevates the Sacred Host so that all may adore. Bells are rung and the Thurifer incenses
the Blessed Sacrament as a sign of our adoration of the real presence of our Saviour.
Likewise, after supper, taking also this goodly chalice into his holy and venerable hands,
again giving thanks to thee, he blessed, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT: FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE
OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE

The Celebrant shows the Chalice of the Precious Blood in the same way. He then intones:
He continues with a solemn recalling of the Lord’s death and resurrection:
HEREFORE, O LORD, we thy servants, and thy holy people also,
remembering the blessed passion of the same Christ thy Son our Lord,
as also his resurrection from the dead, and his glorious ascension into
heaven: do offer unto thine excellent majesty of thine own gifts and
bounty, the pure victim, the holy victim, the immaculate victim, the holy
Bread of eternal life, and the Chalice of everlasting salvation.
He now prays that God may accept the sacrifice the Church now offers:
Vouchsafe to look upon them with a merciful and pleasant countenance; and to accept
them, even as thou didst vouchsafe to accept the gifts of thy servant Abel the righteous,
and the sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham; and the holy sacrifice, the immaculate
victim, which thy high priest Melchisedech offered unto thee.
He invokes the Holy Spirit upon those who are to receive Holy Communion, so as to sanctify them:
We humbly beseech thee, Almighty God: command these offerings to be brought by the
hands of thy holy Angel to thine altar on high, in sight of thy divine majesty; that all we
who at this partaking of the altar shall receive the most sacred Body and Blood of thy
Son, may be fulfilled with all heavenly benediction and grace.
He prays for all the Faithful Departed:
Remember also, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids, who have gone before us sealed
with the seal of faith, and who sleep the sleep of peace. (the Celebrant pauses briefly in silent
prayer) To them, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, we beseech thee to grant the
abode of refreshing, of light, and of peace.
He prays that we be worthy to join the Communion of Saints:
To us sinners also, thy servants, who hope in the multitude of thy mercies,
vouchsafe to grant some part and fellowship with thy holy Apostles and Martyrs: with
John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas,
Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all thy saints: within whose
fellowship, we beseech thee, admit us, not weighing our merit, but granting us
forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom, O Lord, thou dost ever

The Celebrant concludes with the Doxology, the ‘giving of praise’, to the Father, through the Son, in the
