allanwolde, a magnificent Tudor Revival style mansion, was built in 1920
as the home of Charles Howard Candler, eldest son of Coca-Cola founder
Asa G. Candler. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Callanwolde
is a unique arts center that enriches the lives of metropolitan Atlantans
year round.
In 1972, Callanwolde was purchased with funds raised by concerned citizens
and a matching government grant. It is presently owned by DeKalb County;
the grounds are maintained by the Department of Parks and Recreations, and
the buildings are maintained by Physical Plant Management. Callanwolde
Fine Arts Center is now operated and restored by the Callanwolde Foundation,
Inc., a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation. Funding is dependent upon
private and corporate support, government grants, fundraisers, and the arts
and education programs.
Located upstairs in the Petite Hall is the Callanwolde exhibition area. These
exhibitions are open to the public. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday

Callanwolde’s Newest Offering
Music Recording
Program
C
allanwolde Fine Arts Center is thrilled to announce our newest program:
The Callanwolde Music Recording Program. We are honored that this program
is under the direction of Callanwolde’s Director of Recording Phil Tan, a three-time
Grammy Award-winning sound engineer, who has generously donated his time and
resources to help create this new endeavor at Callanwolde.
Atlanta is one of the top ten music recording cities in the nation, yet there has been a lack
of music and recording educational programs and studios – until now. Callanwolde’s
Music Recording Program is a curriculum of classes designed by Phil Tan to provide lowcost training that will be a great start to those interested in learning the art of recording.
The Phil Tan curriculum includes Introduction to Music Technology, a three-part
course. Upon completion of all three parts with a passing grade, students will earn the
Phil Tan Music Recording Certificate which can be an aid for students to gain acceptance
into college music recording programs and in some cases, earn college credit or get
professional studio internships.
This is a great opportunity for people of all ages – including teens – who are interested in
learning about recording and mixing and possibly aspire to work in the music business.
Currently housed our music building, we have workstations for up eight students in each
class, affording everyone personal attention from our expert faculty, coordinated by Phil
Tan. Please see our website for faculty biographies.
Phil Tan
Phil Tan, soft-spoken and
the measure of calm, is one
of the most respected and
highly-awarded professionals
in his field. Phil began his
career at the age of 18, when,
with little music experience
(just some childhood piano
lessons), he decided to focus
on music post-high school.
He was accepted to the
prestigious Berklee School of
Music in Boston, MA but he
could not afford it. Instead,
he chose Full Sail University in Florida and upon graduation, landed an internship here
in Atlanta, which eventually led him to recording and mixing work with JD (Jermaine
Dupri), a friendship and close working relationship that continues to this day. Phil
Tan is a 3-time Grammy award recipient whose credits include bestsellers by Rihanna,
Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo, Ludacris, Usher, Katy Perry, Janelle Monae and more.
Phil’s work over the past 23 plus years accounts for over 300 million albums and singles
sold here in the United States with an economic impact of well over a billion dollars.
We are excited and honored to have Phil Tan join the Callanwolde team to bring this
new program to Metro Atlanta.

If you missed the winter session of Kindermusik
but still want to join in the fun, Don’t Fear! We
are currently enrolling for the second half (last

as we celebrate the unique joys of the growing
child. Our animal theme ties nicely with the
musical themes of folk and mountain music.
Animal sounds, so appealing to children, naturally
prompt imitation and vocal development.
Imagine us moving like these animals too as we
focus on concepts of high, low, smooth, bumpy,
fast and slow.
Encourage your child to be creative, to initiate
their own ideas and to respond in their own ways.
As they play instruments, sing, dance, move and
explore, they’ll uncover an engaging musical
world while building self-confidence, self-control
and communication skills. Home materials

be available after that time; please inquire with
Callanwolde’s Director of Development, Christina
Bray.
Make-Up Policy:
Callanwolde is not responsible for classes missed
due to student absences. Parents should discuss

students must make up classes missed during a
quarter before the end of that quarter. Children
should attend a class of the same age group with
the same instructor.

Beginning/Intermediate Jewelry & Metalsmithing
Staci Fortes, Jewelry Student
I moved to Georgia in 1995 to pursue an education in fashion design, but after
I obtained my degree, I accepted a full time job outside of my field to support
myself. Thirteen years later, I found myself in a rut. I realized my passion had
become a dream rather than reality. I knew at that point I had to make a life
changing decision. Coincidently, my department was relocating to another
state, so I saw this as the opportunity to pursue my passion and start my own
jewelry business. I began making beaded jewelry using prefabricated materials.
I looked into jewelry making courses to improve my technique, and I discovered
that Callanwolde offered silversmithing classes. From my very first session with
jewelry teacher/artist Priscilla Fritsch, I knew I had found my niche. I began
investing my time and resources into learning the skills necessary to create
my own custom jewelry designs. A year and half later, I am well on my way to
establishing myself as a jewelry designer/metalsmith, and am owner of
Kno-mi Designs Inc.

3-Day Plein Air Painting Workshop new!
Visiting Artist Tony Griffin will instruct students
in the fine art of painting outside. Using
Callanwolde’s beautiful acreage as subject, Tony
will present demonstrations and work alongside
students, offering advice and critiques. This is a
wonderful opportunity that coincides with the
Olmstead Plein Air Festival just down the street
from our campus. Tony Griffin is one of North
Carolina’s most accomplished painters. His work
is breathtaking in its beauty and simplicity and
demonstrates the strong personal connection he
feels for the North Carolina mountain landscape.
“His landscapes, which are often done ‘en plein
air’ (on location) are tranquil, thoughtful and
poetic, as if stumbled on by the viewer for the
very first time,” said Jane Grau of the Visual Arts
Critic. Griffin has built a strong reputation as both
a plein-air landscape painter and portrait artist
of note. Even though his style has loosened with
time and experience, the strong classical training
still forms a foundation of all of his creations.

Oil on Canvas
46” X 46”, 2014
Romany’s approach to painting is as physical and bare as her work: she manipulates the tint with
her hands, watching for rather than forcing reactions. When working on a large scale she rushes
from one end of the canvas to the next, catching and re-distributing the movement and placement
of color to build layers over time. Fragments of thought from her family, news that engages
femininity, and sincere curiosity about how to comprehend all the inherent contradictions of her
experience inform Romany’s painting. Romany received a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from
the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011 and a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Maryland
Institute College of Art in 2008. Romany has exhibited both nationally and internationally,
including Stan McCollum Gallery in Atlanta, Sullivan Galleries in Chicago, Parade Ground Gallery in
New York, Amel Bourouina Gallery in Berlin, Germany, and Minninger Gallery in Cologne, Germany.
