Spring 2015
Calverton Swim Club Newsletter
Notes from the President...
Well, this has certainly been an interesting off season, and we
still have (starting February 1) 112 days until we can jump in the
water, but who’s counting?
First, let me welcome and introduce our newest Board Member,
Sandy Albright, who was appointed to fill the vacancy created
by the resignation of Laurie Zebrowski. We will miss Laurie’s
contributions to the Club, but all Board Members are looking
forward to working with Sandy.
A note for those of you who remember Andy Potter, and the
fundraiser we had for his children’s education fund on Labor
Day last year. We received a very warm thank you message
from Andy’s mother, Gail Potter, and I’d like to relay her thanks
and appreciation to all who participated.
Getting back to our winter of interesting stuff. In late August, we
were introduced to the leaking roof in the snack bar. That led to
closer inspection, which led to discovery of several areas of age
-related damage to the building’s roof. All of this led up to resurfacing the roof during December and January, which included
replacing several areas of roof decking.
We now have a new roof which we hope will hold up for more
than 30 years like its predecessor. The good news in this – we
were able to cover the entire cost of the roof ($33,000) with
money from the Reserve Fund.
The bad news – the Reserve Fund is now much lower than we
would like to see it. The current balance is less than $15,000. In
order to cover major ‘surprises’ we feel we need to have at least
$50,000 in the Fund. Our target upper limit for the Reserve
Fund is $100,000 to make us feel very comfortable.

Notes from the President Cont’d.
We need to do something, and rather quickly, to build the Reserve Fund back to a workable level. A big part
of the question is that we just don’t know what major, unexpected, expense will come our way. We like to
think we are covered, but we have to realize that the facility is 50 years old this year, and things happen.
In case we hit a sudden problem before we can build the Reserve Fund back to a safe level, the Board
agreed to pursue a line of credit, and that process is in the works. We hope that we will never have to draw
upon the line, but feel that having it is a necessary shield against an unforeseen major problem.
There is more financial news with which we have to deal. Last year, Montgomery County passed legislation
that increases the Minimum Wage from $7.50 per hour to $8.40 per hour for this season. The new law continues with annual increases until the Minimum Wage reaches $11.50 per hour in the 2018 season.
Since our salary scale was above minimum wage, we were able to absorb this year’s increase without a lot
of trouble; however, the calendar is working against us. Because Memorial Day is early and Labor Day is
late this year, our season is a week longer. We will be open for 15-1/2 weeks instead of the customary 141/2, so we have to deal with a payroll increase of about 7% for that reason. Further, we will have to face minimum wage increases to $9.55 and $10.75 in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
After all this, the following should not be a surprise. As much as we hate the idea, we are going to have to
impose a dues increase on all members for 2015. As this is being written, the exact amount is still being discussed but it will be reflected in the dues notices that will be coming out a few days after this issue of the
newsletter.

Dues Notice Timetable
We are taking steps to get the notices out earlier this year, so look for them before the first of March. We hope
that earlier sending will give everyone a little more time to take care of submitting their registrations and dues
payments. Payment deadlines will remain about the same. See “Save the Date” section for deadlines.
Wanted: Refrigerator
Do you have a large frost free refrigerator/freezer (good condition) that you would like
to donate to the Calverton Swim Club? Our old one in the office is running poorly and
we'd like to replace it. We can pick up.

2015 CSC Volleyball News:
CSC Volleyball – Better and Brighter Than Ever
Jeff Paniati, CSC Volleyball Commissioner
As we look forward to another season of fun and competition I am pleased to let you know that we are continuing to improve the volleyball facilities at CSC. Thanks to our special dues assessment last year and under the direction of John Niedermair, we will be upgrading the lights this spring. Of course, that means one
less excuse for an errant pass or set.☺ When combined with the new net systems that were installed last
year, the CSC Volleyball Courts will be better and brighter than ever.
New Players Wanted - As always, we are looking for new players interested in participating. CSC volleyball
provides a great way to get some exercise, enjoy a little friendly competition, and make a lot of new friends.
We have a variety of leagues – Coed 4’s (Wednesday night), Women’s (Friday night), Men’s (Saturday afternoon), and Coed 6’s (Sunday afternoon). While some previous volleyball experience is helpful, players at all
levels are welcome. We will match up new players with existing teams. We play weekly throughout the summer and finish the season with a short playoff, a volleyball picnic and an end of season tournament on Labor
Day. If you are interested in joining or looking for more information, you can contact me at
paniati@verizon.net.
Volleyball Commissioners Needed – One of our long time Volleyball Commissioners – Terry Thomas
(men’s) is looking to hand off the responsibility. We very much appreciate all of Terry’s efforts and hope
someone would be willing to step up and take on this responsibility. The role is important, but does not involve a large time commitment. The Commissioners work with me to review and update our rules and develop our schedule. They work with team captains to identify the number of teams in the league, place new
players on teams, and develop the schedules for the regular season and playoffs. Having been the co-ed
volleyball commissioner for a number of years there is a flurry of activity at the start of the season to get
things organized and not too much effort needed until the end of the summer when you finalize the league
results and develop the playoff schedule. If you are interested in helping to keep volleyball alive and well at
CSC, please contact me at paniati@verizon.net.
Doubles Tournament - Dana Mitchell will be hosting a Doubles Tournament on Sunday May 31 at
12:30PM. Registration for the tournament is free and closes May 30. There will be two pools an A and B.
You may contact Dana at danarmitchell10@gmail.com to sign up.
Operations Update
CHANGES, ADDITIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS FOR 2015
Looking forward, we hope to still be able to bring you some improvements that will add to your enjoyment of
the Club facilities this year. One project will be to employ some rather new processes to elevate areas of
concrete that have settled over time and are creating trip hazards. This process has met with success at other venues, and solves the problem at a fraction of the cost of replacing the concrete.
You may notice a new addition to the Club’s grounds. A second shed has been added near the basketball
court. This is a cooperative venture between the Club and the Calverton Citizens’ Association (CCA), which
needed a place to store equipment. CCA owns the shed, we own the land, and both use the shed for storage purposes.
Look for more announcements as we make plans to celebrate our 50th Anniversary as a community swim
club, and recognize those members who have been with us since the very start.
We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with American Pool Service for 2015. American has
been our management company for about 30 years, and we feel good about staying with a comfortable partner in keeping the Club operating safely and smoothly.
Last, but certainly not least, we are looking forward to having John Neidermair IV return as Manager in 2015;
hopefully, to be joined by most, if not all, of the staff from last year.
