Camp Korey is a non-profit agency that honors the courage, strength, and determination of
children and their families who battle serious and life-altering medical conditions. Through
programs and facilities, Camp Korey provides these children with a safe, friendly, and medically
sound environment in which to simply have fun and be kids, at no cost to them or their families.

About this Internship:
Camp Korey is situated on the historic 818-acre organic Carnation Farm in the Snoqualmie
Valley not far from Seattle. The 4.5 acre certified organic garden is operated by our Culinary
Gardener with the help of many individual and corporate volunteers and local school groups.
The garden produces a significant portion of the produce used in camper meal programs, for
special events, farm dinners and meetings on site. Excess produce is sold locally, or donated to
the local Foodbank. With over 100 varieties of heirloom vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and
berries, the garden is also used as an educational resource for camper programming. The
garden design and management demonstrates sustainable soil management and deficit water
use, and supports beneficial insects and pollinators, local bird populations and wildlife habitat.
A variety of tasks in the garden include, and are not limited to; all aspects of certified organic
crop production of vegetables, herbs and flowers, food system programming for our campers,
giving tours for visitors and supervision of volunteers. In addition to helping with daily
operations of the garden, this internship will expose students to the Camp Korey mission and
the many aspects of its programs for children and families. This is a paid full-time seasonal
position. Room and board may be negotiated. Considered candidates need an interest in food,
sustainability and agriculture.
Samples of Internship Activities:
 Assist gardener with maintenance of crops; planting, transplanting, mulching, weeding,
composting, soil management, crop rotation, tillage, seed-saving, pest and disease control,
fertilizing, harvesting, irrigation, construction of trellising, cover cropping, high tunnel crop
production
 Aid in camper programming including leading activities in the garden and carrying out
educational programming outside of the garden
 Tend to raised beds and various container plantings used in programming
 Oversee volunteer groups and Foodbank gleaners



Assist in set up, execution and tear down of events in garden, including farm-to-table
dinners
Aid in recordkeeping to maintain compliance with organic certification
Operate agricultural equipment in the field
Training and Experience:
 Basic computer skills, i.e. MS Office
 Clear oral and written communication skills
Schooling and Training:
 High School diploma or G.E.D.
 One year of advanced schooling with an emphasis on agriculture (desirable)
Key Requirements:
 Consistent attention to detail and positive attitude
 Experience farming or gardening and/or a strong desire to learn
 Experience working with children and youth
 Ability to stay organized while juggling multiple projects simultaneously
 Be able to take direction and ask for clarification if needed
 Must adhere to safety protocols at all times
 Ability to work hard; standing, sitting, bending over or kneeling: to lift, push and pull heavy
objects, up to 50lbs: perform physical work such as digging or planting, sometimes in
inclement weather
 Good record keeping abilities
 Able to pass a background check including driving record
 Meet immunization policy requirements for work with medically compromised campers
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
 Valid driver’s license
 CPR, advanced first aid and defibrillator training preferred
Working Conditions: (percentages are approximations)
 70% in on-site/field projects
 30% in on-site meetings and participation in camp activities and programming
 Occasional night and weekend work required
Hours
Seasonal position, early June through mid-August, 40 hours a week
