How We Remember Student Contest

Rules mandatory
Subject to the applicable laws, these rules govern all aspects of the How We Remember Student
Contest (the “Contest”) and are binding to all participants.
The Contest is run by Historica Canada in conjunction with its sponsors.
2.
Eligibility
Participants must be residents of Canada and registered students between grades 4-12.
Submissions will be separated into three grade categories: Elementary (grades 4-6), Junior
(grades 7-9, secondary I-secondary III in Quebec) and Senior (grades 10-12, secondary IV –V in
Quebec). Contestants will be required to provide proof of grade.
All entrants (group and individual) are required to submit their name, age, grade, address, city,
province and postal code, telephone number, email address, the name and email. An entrant
who is below the age of majority in his/her province or territory of residence must have the
consent of his/her parent or legal guardian to submit his/her personal information in order to
enter the contest. If a parent or legal guardian does not provide consent, the entrant will be
disqualified.

Contest Guidelines
Groups or individuals may submit up to one (1) writing and one (1) art submission. Three grade
categories: Elementary (grades 4-6), Junior (grades 7-9, secondary I-secondary III in Quebec)
and Senior (grades 10-12, secondary IV – grade 12/secondary V in Quebec). By submitting a
writing or art piece, the participant(s) confirm that their submission is an original work.
Groups of six (6) or more will be considered for a Group prize. Eligible groups include
communities, clubs, classrooms, schools, or student groups.
Within the elementary, junior and senior age groups, a first, second and third place prize will be
awarded.
4.
Duration
The contest will launch March 16, 2015. Each participating individual must submit no more than
one piece by December 15, 2015, at midnight EST.
The winners will be selected from the three categories. There will be a first, second and third
prize awarded in all three grade categories for both writing and art submissions. There will be
one prize awarded to a group.
The winners will be announced in January 2016.

5.
Art or Writing Piece
The submitted art or writing piece can be a drawing, painting, poem or short story around the
theme of remembrance of the First or Second World War. Any written submission must not
exceed 1000 words. Each submission must include a written artist or author statement to a
maximum of 300 words. This written statement should include an explanation of what the artist
or writer is trying to communicate in their piece. The statement should also include an
explanation of why the artist or writer chose the specific topic for their art or writing piece.
6.
How to enter
Individuals participating in How We Remember may enter by completing a submission form.
The decision to disqualify any entry is at the sole discretion of the Contest Sponsor and
Administrator, and will occur without notice or communication to the entrant. The
disqualification decision is final and not subject to review.
All entries must include a completed Participant Submission form, author/artist statement and
submission. All entries must be received no later than midnight at Dec 15th 2015. Late entries
will be disqualified. There is no fee to enter this contest, and no purchase is necessary.

Art Entries: Entries submitted online via http://canada1914-1945.ca/contest-page/ or via
email must be in .jpg, or .tiff format. Participants may submit up to five (5) high resolution
photos of their piece.
Please do not send final artwork. Finalists will be requested to ship their artwork for the
final judging process. Submit max 5 hi-res photographs through the following methods:

Awarding of Prizes
Submissions are reviewed by Historica Canada and a jury.
8.
Prizes*
Within the Elementary division (grades 4-6) a first, second and third place prize will be
awarded.
Within the Junior division (grades 7-9, secondary I-secondary III in Quebec) a first, second and
third place prize will be awarded.
Within the Senior division (grades 10-12, secondary IV – V in Quebec) a first, second and third
place prize will be awarded. There will also be an overall award.
The winners will be selected from the three categories. There will be a first, second and third
prize awarded in all three grade categories for both writing and art submissions. There will be
one prize awarded to a group of six or more participants. Grade 12 students are not eligible for a
group prize.
The winners will be announced in January 2016.
First prize winners will receive an iPad mini, second prize winners will receive an iPod nano,
third prize winners will receive an iPod nano. The group prize winners will receive a classroom
party.
*Prizes may be changed without prior notice.The prizes may not be exchanged for cash in whole
or in part.
9.
Miscellaneous
The organizers of the How We Remember accept no responsibility for any losses or damages
resulting from the awarding of any of the prizes in this contest. The chances to win are
proportional to the number of entries.
10.
Advertising and Personal Information
By entering this contest, all participants also provides the contest organizers with any required
authorization to use his or her name and/or submission for advertising purposes, without
compensation. All e-mails received will be added to our database.
