NEWSLETTER ~ MARCH/APRIL 2015 Pages 1 & 2 Dear Members, Firstly, I wish to thank Florence Clements, who bravely took on the Newsletter when I was ill, keeping you informed of present and coming events. All this, as well as plying (together with Phyllis Hill and Jeanette Knight) Alvin who was just out of hospital, and me with sustenance in the form of delicious meals. Laurel kept us supplied with fresh spinach from her garden; just right for “green smoothies”. We cannot thank everyone enough for the many kindnesses and good wishes we received during that time. On a more serious note, you probably know that DAS was (once again) greatly inconvenienced by maintenance work undertaken at the two Halls. But then: a light at the end of the tunnel appeared in the shape of Phyllis and John Hill, who kindly offered the beautiful shaded space outside of their home for our weekly Wednesday get-togethers (all welcome), as well as the first Meeting for 2015. We are greatly indebted to them, because with nowhere to go, we feared that our very busy Art Society could just fade away. Quite unthinkable !! It is very sad that two of our older members are no longer able to attend, because of ill health. We miss Gloria Smith, who despite everything, is still creating watercolours in her new home. Sheila and Vern Saw have been unwell, and Mary Atkinson, Pat Pomeroy, Richard Mothersole and Elaine Davey also. Wishing all of you, and everyone of our members and past members happier and healthier times ahead. What a great workshop Leon gave us !! I was quite worried about painting outside, especially considering that the weather was supposed to be very hot. But I needn’t have worried, because the whole two days were much cooler than expected. On the Monday Leon demonstrated at the Boat Ramp in Dunsborough, showing us (amongst many other things) an easy way to judge right colours; and then we went back to the Hills for lunch. In the afternoon we returned to the boat ramp to do our own painting of the scene. It was quite shady under the trees and for the first time I enjoyed working outside instead of just from photos. On the second day we went to Castle Rock at 6.30 am !!! Again Leon demonstrated, we went back for lunch, and then returned to do our own paintings. I am very sure that everybody enjoyed it just as much as me, and it certainly gave me confidence to go again. On behalf of you all, many thanks to Leon Holmes and Phyllis & John Hill for a very enjoyable two days. From Laurel WEB PAGE http://capeartists.weebly.com Page 3 The year of 2015 is dedicated to our longest serving members. For that reason, our Web Page Director John Hill chose Betty Symes as ‘Artist in Focus’ for January to March on our Web Page. Featured on this page are Betty and a few samples of her work. The next Artists in Focus will be:* Laurel Ashley ~ April to June. * Margaret Sargant ~ July to September. * Barbara Reid ~ October to December. While John continues to promote the work of DAS artists, (for which we are eternally grateful) he will also go (if required) to an Artist’s home to photograph their work for the Web Page. He gives much thought and hard work to achieving the best possible results, ably assisted by his busy wife Phyllis.
