Most often it is hit from just behind the service line, or "no man's land". It is a fundamental shot for all doubles players who wish to master the midcourt. Specifically, a half volley is any shot from a ball that hits the ground immediately before it hits the racquet. The shot is hit with a modified groundstroke action, unlike the volley. A slightly slower and shorter swing is used to learn the shot correctly. The forces of momentum are compelling the tennis ball to MARCH 28: CLEAN UP DAY APRIL 11: OPENING DAY JUNE 13: CAPILANO CHALLENGE JULY 12 BREAKFAST AT WIMBLEDON JULY 25– AUG 2 CLUB TOURNAMENT SEPTEMBER 5: CALCUTTA TOURNAMENT President’s Report Alex McCullouch rise after it contacts the racket face, so the racquet face angle, which must be SLIGHTLY closed throughout impact to prevent the ball from popping up as a put away for the opponents. Be balanced and still at the precise moment of impact. Any unnecessary forward movement will make your half volley much tougher to control. Once you discover how easy it is to meet the ball cleanly, you can increase your swing speed to make the shot more offensive. This is Your Club! Every couple of years Capilano Tennis Club is required to submit to the District of North Vancouver an application to allow us not to pay property tax. Cleverly, this is called a Permissive Tax Exemption Application by Council. Why should the members of CTC Club care? The simple answer is that it would increase our costs to a point where our club may not be viable. As we all know, nothing is ever that simple in life. The Capilano Tennis Club has existed since 1934 and has a long history of serving the community of tennis players. CTC is unique on the North Shore and perhaps in the lower mainland. The District owns our (Cont’d Page 2) Page 2 COURT VIEWS (This is your club cont’d from page 1) property but we own the building. The members of our club maintain this property. That is, we maintain the land, the courts, the fences, the parking lot, the clubhouse and the gardens; everything. We are a grassroots community that provide our services freely. This is important. The District is keenly interested in how we function and they want to ensure we earn the right not to pay property taxes. As much as everyone does not like paying taxes, the public revenue stream pays for many of the benefits we receive as a citizens: roads, infrastructure, parks, recreational facilities and etc. In order for us to qualify for the privilege of not paying taxes we must prove we meet a few conditions. One of the key reasons we qualify is that we are a community-based group and we operate our club without paying any salaries or having paid staff. This includes the cutting of grass, the building of fences, the shovelling of gravel, the endless garden planting and weeding, our social events, tennis events, the clean up and much more. We the members accomplish all this. Another key reason is we are required to prove we are an extension of the services provided by the District. We need to do more that just provide four tennis courts. The District provides a very large number of quality public accessible tennis courts. No other community is better serviced than we are. For us to just look after the courts is not enough. We must continue to support the District programs. This includes Junior tennis programs, adult play programs, league play, lessons (open to the public, social events and social tennis play. The key to this is that we are building a community that allows people to socialize, build relationships, stay healthy and be an active part of our community. This means each club member must participate in building this community and not just working on your tennis game. Make a point in helping new members and new players to be part of the club. We are a grassroots community that provide our services freely. This is important. It does goes without saying we are inclusive of all people regardless of race, colour, age or religion. We also make a point to being inclusive of all residents of the North Shore whether they are members or not. This is why many of our programs are open to non-members; lessons, junior programs, social events are some examples. Our guest fees are modest and do not cover our cost. I do not contribute because I have to, because I should do or because I am supposed to. I contribute because I want to. I wish the same for you and this club. This year we are reaching out to this community and this membership to celebrate this idea and collectively take this step forward by taking responsibility for ourselves. We do not have a paid staff and at the same time administration, maintenance, purchasing, banking, web management, newsletters, taking the garbage out, and organizing events all take time and effort. The only cost of helping out and reaching out is that you will feel better. Over the next couple of months we will speaking about how everyone can become more involved, more often looking forward to Capilano Tennis Club becoming more of what you already love about it. Anything is possible here. Anything. Margaret Mead once said: ‘Never doubt what a group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’ ‘Capilano Tennis Club would be more appropriately called Capilano Tennis Cooperative. We are a community, a family and not just an organization. If I couldn’t win, tennis court, and being able to hit a ball again was cause for celebration. With those slower movements of retraining my body I had no choice but to observe the mechanics of motion, which for years I had taken for granted. Over time, this study became a fascination for the fine art and beauty of motion itself. I had no idea what was required in terms of focus, coordination, strength and agility in delivering an impactful and effective ball across the net and perfect the stroke itself. The aesthetics of the stroke and the exquisite coordination of movements of this body machine astounded me. I can now spend hours hitting the ball against a practice wall and it’s a form of meditation. In the absence of focusing on winning, another world has opened up for me. It’s like the Matrix; there is an underworld beneath this illusionary reality that reveals an actual reality. To get there, Neo chooses the Red Pill over the Blue Pill. I’ll take the Red Pill please. The pill is the cost of admission curiosity, interest and continuing to walk towards what I don’t know rather than what I do. This didn’t know this alternate reality existed. In place of my addiction for winning has emerged a fascination for the secrets of eloquent power and the art of graceful motion. I look forward to I can now spend hours hitting the ball against a practice wall and it’s a form of meditation COURT VIEWS Page 5 (I Pill Please cont’d page 4) the next time-out for more secrets to be revealed to me. I do this not to provide me with another weapon to win but rather a tool to get closer to something or someone I’ve had a glimpse of i.e. like Roger Federer in my onehanded topspin backhand. I get to know him even just for a second “So that’s what it is like to be Roger….amazing!” Watch Roger at center court. Watch him in slow motion completing his stroke…he looks down at the space where a ball has already left his racquet. It allows for a complete commitment to perfection. He is not even looking at where the ball is going! He’s in a relationship with something beyond outcome…his art. Despite having millions on the line and equally as many people watching, I suspect Roger has taken the Red Pill as well and is more in relationship with the beauty (and dare I say divinity of the stroke) than what his stroke can accomplish or provide him. We may never see another quite like him. But it doesn’t stop there. I am also meeting myself. Who is this person emerging that smiles at his mistakes as often as his successes? That has new values that celebrate his opponent’s successes as much as his own? That wants to know the ‘opponent’ beyond being an opponent? I am discovering more of who I actually am and who I am deciding to be rather than my earlier obsession, of who I thought I needed to be or what I thought I needed to accomplish. I am less frustrated and more peaceful. Much like the opening sequence in the TV series “Get Smart”, this is like walking through a door into a room and taking in the lessons and splendor of that new room. And when I do, another door opens at the other end and another lesson greets me. To the degree that I remain curious, open and humble, it allows for a steady graduation or personal evolution as well as the discovery of so many secrets unavailable in the previous rooms. The doors keep opening. How many are there? I don’t know. How is this different than meditation? It isn’t. A force beyond all of the distracting, frantic, desperate, human goal-oriented behavior is winking at all of us all of the time. I get glimpses. It becomes spiritual. Tennis has become my church. I study. I am now focusing on who I want to be rather than what I want to achieve. One can only wonder what would happen if we took the Red Pill in every aspect of our lives…at home…at work, to witness a world here at Cap we didn’t know existed. Federer is in a relationship with something beyond outcome… Page 6 COURT VIEWS TREASURER’S REPORT BY TIBOR GAJDICS As the newly appointed treasurer of Capilano Tennis club, and upon review of the Capilano Tennis's financial affairs, I would like to give a Big Thank you to our past treasurer ,Denis MacAree who clearly kept our club financially safe and sound.
