You spend a lot of time looking for a job,
but have you considered what it takes to
be successful once you get there?
Professionalism, work ethic, and
communication skills are consistently
among the top five "very important"
applied skills for job success for new
workforce entrants. Employers are
certainly going to be looking for these
qualities during the hiring process, as
well as during your probation period when
you first get on the job.

RESEARCH YOUR JOB, DON'T BE A VICTIM OF FRAUD
SENDING PAYMENTS
Jobs that ask you to send
payment by wire service
or courier.
Recently, the Career Center has become aware of students falling victim to Check Scams, also
known as Advanced Fee Scams, by the FBI. Con artists pose as an employer and then start an
email or text conversation with the applicant.
LARGE PAYMENT
Positions in which you are
offered a large payment or
reward in exchange for
allowing the use of your bank
account - often for
depositing checks or
transferring money.
Here are some common themes the UCR Career Center has noticed. Be aware if:
•You only speak to the individual via email/text and they want to hire you without meeting you.
•The nature of the job changes along the process as the individual is a “busy executive”, “out of
the county”, or “has taken ill in another state”.
•They offer to meet with you when they return.
•The company name used via email starts to differ from the company name on the job board
and/or the nature of work has changed from an office location to a “work from home” job.
•The individual sends you a check in the mail before you do any work and asks you to run
personal errands for them or to purchase supplies for the company.
FACE TO FACE
Make sure there is some
face to face interaction and
that everything is not done
over email or the phone.
THE PROMISE
of a large salary for very little
work – especially those that
state thousands of dollars of
income per month with little
or no experience required.
PERSONAL INFORMATION
Positions that ask you to
give credit card or bank
account numbers, or copies
of personal documents.
The FBI describes this scam as:
“You’re sent a hefty check and asked to deposit it into your bank account, then withdraw funds to
shop and check out the service of local stores and wire transfer companies. You keep a small
amount of the money for your “work,” but then, as instructed, mail or wire the rest to your
“employer.” Sound good? One problem: the initial check was phony, and by the time your bank
notifies you, your money is long gone and you’re on the hook for the counterfeit check.” FBI Crime
Site: http://www.fbi.gov/scams-safety/fraud
If the offer of an opportunity appears too good to be true, it probably is! If you have questions
about a position, found on SCOTjobs or elsewhere, the Career Center is here as a resource for you!
