Dear friends,
Welcome to the 54th annual International Carillon Festival! The Springfield Park
District, Rees Carillon Society and the Carillon Belles are proud to present this
annual event to the Springfield Community and guests from around the world.
This year’s festival continues the tradition of presenting outstanding concerts by
the world’s top Carillonneurs.
We are very happy to welcome back Frits Reynaert (Netherlands) and Carlo van
Ulft (USA) who were last heard on the Rees Tower in 1997 and 2012 respectively.
Frits will be appearing in his 4th festival and Carlo his 6th! Welcome back,
gentlemen! All are excited to welcome Andrée- Anne Doane (Quebec), Joey
Brink (USA) and Jon Lehrer (British Columbia) to their festival debuts. It is truly
an exceptional group of musicians appearing this year. Thank you all for sharing
your talents!
This year’s student performers include Patrick Knox (USA) and Angela Paul-Pryer
(USA) who both started carillon studies here in Springfield, IL. Patrick has worked
with the North American Carillon School while both students have studied
privately under Robin Austin. This year’s students will be performing a Concerto
for Two on Friday just before our firework spectacular!
Earlier this year, the Rees Carillon Society and Verdin Bell & Clock refurbished and
reactivated the Westminster Chime which now tolls the hour from 9am to 9pm
daily. A special thanks to those at the Verdin Company for their tireless work on
this project and to the Rees Carillon Society for their generous donation!
Our Wednesday evening concerts are dedicated to “Lincoln and the Music He
Loved”. The mid-week concert will feature tunes familiar to the Lincoln’s such as
Stephen Foster songs, patriotic melodies as well as well-known classical music
from the period. We invite all to come visit the Lincoln sites and enjoy these
wonderful concerts!
We are pleased with the combined efforts of so many to organize and bring you
this year’s 54th International Carillon Festival. Thanks to the support of all of our
Trustees, the Carillon Society Members, Carillon Belles and Park District Staff for
their tireless efforts to preserve the rich history that Thomas Rees bestowed upon
us so many years ago.
Sincerely,
Leslie Sgro

The second flamenco is a Soleares in 3/4 time, quicker and more demanding than its predecessor, as Turina basically presents a series of variations on the contrasting quick runs

1. Fabritio Caroso (Sermoneta, Italy, 1526/1535 – 1605/1620) was an Italian RenaisBarcarolle (from Serenade I for Carillon) Ronald Barnes (1927-1997)
sance dancing master and a composer or transcriber of dance music. By his late twenties, Caroso had become a master of dance and was in the service of the Duchess of
Sermoneta. Caroso died after 1605, possibly in Rome.
His dance manual ‘Nobiltà di Dame’ was printed in 1600 and again - after his death - in
1630. It has been published in English as ‘Courtly Dance of the Renaissance’ by Julia Sutton. Many of the dances also contain dedications to noble women of the sixteenth and
early seventeenth centuries.

4. “Cantio Matutina” means Morning Song. This piece is written in 2002 to compete in a
composition contest in the Dutch VOC-town Hoorn. On the occasion of 400 years VOC (=
Dutch East India Company), composers were challenged to write a carillon compositions
with a VOC-related theme. He chose the melody of ‘Aurora brengt de klare dag’ (‘Aurora
brings the serene day’) as a starting point for this composition. It’s a lamentation (± 1700)
of a young man who said farewell to his love and went to the East Indies.
The tranquil meditative movement is alternated with phrases from the song.
Radek Rejšek won a 3rd price with this composition. The composer Radek Rejšek (*1959)
studied composition and trumpet, a.o. at the Prague Conservatory.
In 1989 he started his activities as carillon player at Prague Loreto (since 1994 with a fullrights title).

symphonies, sacred music, opera’s,
incidental music and a large body of chamber and piano music. During his lifetime,
appreciation of his music was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna,
but interest in his work increased significantly in the decades following his death. Many
19th-century composers (f.e. Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt) discovered and
championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of the
late Classical era and early Romantic era and is one of the most frequently performed
composers of the early nineteenth century.
Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern (Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus) is a play, which is
primarily remembered for the incidental music which Franz Schubert composed for it.
Music and play premiered in Vienna’s ‘Theater an der Wien’ on 20 December 1823.
“Auf dem Wasser zu singen” is a song composed by Franz Schubert in 1823 and based
on the poem of the same name by Friedrich Leopold zu Stolberg-Stolberg. The text
describes a scene on the water from the perspective of the narrator who is in a boat, and
delves into the narrator’s reflections on the passing of time.

6. Sjef van Balkom (1922-2004) was the former city carillonneur of ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Den
Bosch) in the Netherlands from 1955-1987. He wrote innovative carillon literature in the
typical northern Dutch style that emerged after World War 2. He has written about thirty
works for carillon.
“Heer Jezus heeft een hofken” is the Dutch version of the well-known melody “King Jesus
Hath a Garden.” Van Balkom composed a range of variations on this famous anthem. The
introduction was set up quite modern, using motifs from this song. The variations are
more classic in design, but with modernistic elements.

symphonies, sacred music, opera’s,
incidental music and a large body of chamber and piano music.

The second flamenco is a Soleares in 3/4 time, quicker and more demanding than its predecessor, as Turina basically presents a series of variations on the contrasting quick runs
and forceful strums characteristic of the flamenco style.

1
Sincerely,
Leslie Sgro
Springfield Park Board President
