Whatever happened to April showers bringing May flowers? It looks like we will have iris blooms regardless of insufficient rain. We have had the most incredible iris clump ever which is Recurring Dreams, 1993, by Ben Hager. I think it’s the best clump we’ve grown since 1991 when we became interested in irises. At that time Philippa was in charge of drumming up workers for Region 14’s Regional and John and I worked in Bill Maryott’s garden on Bird Avenue in San Jose refilling the snack trays. You know how farm kitchens and sinks are trending now? Bill and Marilyn Harlow had an original farm kitchen that was fun to work in. Please read the rest of the bulletin for interesting news. It is a big birthday month and we wished many happy returns to Logan Danner, Rosemary Chivers, Jennifer Vanden Beukel, Dave Henley and Jane Anne Walters. Barbara announced that the Spring Bulletin for Region 14 is on the regions’ website. Go to aisregion14.org, then to bulletins in the tool bar and it is listed in brown font. I just checked it out myself and it is chock full of iris information. There is a nice article by Region 14 hybridizer, Leslie Painter, about how she and husband, John, got started on their iris addiction. The pictures of iris are beautiful and may help you identify some in your garden. I also like the Affiliate Happenings section. I learned that the James M. Gibson Iris Society will be handling the iris exhibit at the spring regional at Bass Lake. Entries will be accepted on 4/17 after 4 p.m.. Best in Show will receive a $50 prize from the Yosemite Iris Society. The following weekend is the 17th annual Porterville Iris Festival. Who knew? The Santa Rosa Iris Society members are growing 745 pots of iris to sell at their show for $7 each. Do the math! Vice President Lynn Stuart introduced the speaker, Deyana Hopkins, a Master Gardener, who told us how to control pests and diseases in the garden in an environmentally sensitive way. She also told us which ones were beneficial and not to kill. After the program, Barbara thanked Philippa, Mary, me, Jean and Pat Hawkins and Jane Anne who brought refreshments and drinks. After the break, Jane Jordan explained that the Garden Tour would be different this year. The open gardens would be announced as the gardens were in peak bloom. Jane Kwant will also have an open garden. Carolyn Craft updated us on the SF Flower and Garden Show, March 18-22. It was almost fully staffed. Lisa Ayala spoke about the need of members to preregister with her if they were going to do an artistic arrangement for Simply IRISistible, April 25-26, at Westgate Mall. I will have signup sheets at the next meeting for all the positions that need to be filled to host a successful show. Mark Greene asked for signups for the Master Gardener’s Sale at History San Jose on April 11th. Barbara needs a chairperson for the CBRIS nominating committee. Mary Collins has agreed to continue as Treasurer. Barbara asked for donations for the regional basket for the Spring Regional. Please bring them to the next meeting. I was so pleased to have Phyllis Wilburn and Ruth Ostroff from Sacramento Iris Society working in the booth for the first time. They assured me they had a wonderful time, loved all the exhibits, shopped a lot and were surprised at how big the Flower Show was. Of course, those of us who have been doing this for a few years see that the show has gotten smaller. It is still fun with new things added each year. There were booths selling plants, there were food vendors, seminars and demonstrations and lots to purchase for your garden, for gifts or just for yourself. Not surprising, the garden displays were beautiful and a couple were very interactive. One of the new booths I was impressed by was the large booth all about making your own probiotic food, growing, canning, preserving and living off the land. The Plant Professor who searches the world for rare and endangered species was there again with lots of seeds and information. His excitement for finding such treasures is contagious. Our booth was well stocked to help people find an iris society show, rhizome sale or society to join near the area where they live. Again, Henry supplied us with beautiful Tall Bearded Iris and Jane Anne supplied us with beautiful Pacific Coast Hybrids. Workers who came in during the event brought a few more blooms. From CBRIS, Jane Jordan, Mark Greene and Jane Kwant were there for the first time. From MBIS, Sherry Austin was there for the first time. This accredited show is being held and judged under the rules and regulations of The American Iris Society as set forth in the Handbook for Judges and Show Officials, 7th Edition, 2007, and subsequent rules and regulations approved by The American Iris Society Board of Directors. These rules and regulations may not be violated. 2. Accredited judges of The American Iris Society will judge all entries in the Horticulture Division(s). Judges’ decisions will be final. Any award may be withheld at their discretion. 3. Entries will be received from 7 am to 10:15 am on April 25, 2015. Containers are to be provided by the exhibitor. Pre-registration is required. 2. Experienced, qualified judges will judge this Division. Judges of the National Garden Clubs and/or The American Iris Society will judge the artistic/design exhibits. 3. Judges are requested to write comments for each design on a 3” X 5” card provided by the Show Committee. This will encourage and educate the exhibitor. Comments should include a positive comment and any errors should be based on the principles of design in a constructive manner. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DESIGN CATEGORIES Section A BEGINNER’S LUCK: A freestyle design open to novices only. Must not have won any blue ribbons in Artistic. Section B IT’S JUST ME: A freestyle design using any or all parts of any iris (amount unlimited, must include at least one flower). Section C UP & COMING: A design no bigger than 15 inches high, wide or deep. Section D NEW HORIZONS: A horizontal design. Section E ARIGATO: A design in the style of traditional or modern Japanese floral design. Section F BOOTSTRAP BILL: A design for men only that incorporates the use of a boot. Section G WILD WILD WEST: A western themed design for youth under the age of 19. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------AWARDS American Iris Society Awards 1. Ribbons and Rosettes: Each specimen can be awarded only one ribbon. One First (Blue), one Second (Red), and one Third (White) place ribbon may be given to each cultivar in any given Section except in the Seedling Division. As many Honorable Mention (Pink) ribbons may be awarded as the panel of Judges deems worthy. 2. Best Specimen of Show – (Seedlings, Bulbous): Large purple rosette. Best Specimen of Show - Youth 3. Runners-up (one) to Best Specimen of Show: Small purple rosette. Each runner-up must have earned a first place ribbon.) 4. Horticultural Sweepstakes (most blue ribbons): Adult Silver Medal and Certificate and large purple rosette. To award the Adult Silver Medal and Certificate there must be at least five exhibitors and at least twenty cultivars at a spring show. To award Youth Silver Medal and Certificate requires at least two youth exhibitors and at least ten cultivars for a Spring Show. In the event of a tie for any medal or certificate award, second place award ribbons (red) will be counted. If a tie still exists, third place ribbons (white) are to be counted, and if a tie still persists, honorable mention award ribbons (pink) are to be counted. If such procedure does not determine a winner, duplicate silver medals (and NO bronze medal) will be awarded. If the tie involves the bronze medal, duplicate bronze medals will be awarded. 5. Horticultural Sweepstakes Runner-up (second most blue ribbons): Bronze Medal and Certificate. The minimum requirements and counting conditions are the same as under (4) above. 6. Best Seedling – Purple rosette and Exhibition Certificate. An exhibition Certificate will also be awarded to any seedling receiving five or more votes from fully accredited AIS judges attending the show. (Ballots and envelopes are available at the Seedling Division. Judges will please seal ballots and give to the Show Chairman.) 7. A Section Medal Certificate and Rosette may be awarded in each Section where there are at least three exhibitors and at least five different cultivars in the Section. 8. Educational Exhibit may receive the Bronze Medal Certificate for outstanding Educational Exhibit. 9. Perpetual Trophies.
