This pattern uses the Quill Eyelet stitch pattern from Nicky Epstein’s
Knitting on the Edge. It features a knit-in fringe, a technique also
described in that book, which produces a unique “swish” effect.
In this pattern six extra stitches are knit on each row, along one side
of the main stitch pattern, which are then unravelled to form a run of
loops on one edge along the full length of the scarf.
If you would prefer not to have a fringe, instructions are also
provided for a plain scarf.
Fringed Scarf:
Cast on 32 stitches.
Row 1:
Purl.
Row 2:
K 6, K into back of next stitch,
[yo, K1, Slip 1, K2tog, psso , K1, yo, K1] four times, K1.
These two rows form the pattern. Repeat until all three balls of yarn
have been used, or until the scarf is the desired length, ending on a
right side row.
Cast off 26 stitches purlwise (6 stitches remain).

Make Fringe
Slip the remaining stitches off the needles and carefully unravel six
stitches from each row along the side of the knitted piece.
We recommend unravelling two rows at a time (as they will be one
“loop” of yarn) and tying a knot at the knit edge of each loop as you
go.
This will take a little time but the effect is well worth the wait. We
promise.
Plain Scarf:
Cast on 31 stitches.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: K 1, [yo, K1, Slip 1, K2tog, psso , K1, yo, K1] 5 times.
These two rows form the pattern. Repeat until all three balls of yarn have
been used, or until the scarf is the desired length, ending on a right side
row.
Cast off all stitches purlwise.
