Director's Note
In rehearsal a few days ago, a member of the cast asked to hear my
interpretation of Spring Awakening’s final song, “The Song of Purple
Summer.” Though the question was asked offhandedly, it led me and the
entire cast to consider how the story we are telling relates to each of our
lives and the futures we hope to build.
Purple summer is a time of maturation. It is a time when we look back
wistfully at the spring, when everything felt warm and easy and good.
Purple summer is not easy; it is full of struggle, confusion, and the
excitement of the unknown. We bruise, we mend, and then we do it all
over again.
After purple summer comes autumn, and the days turn colder. Life becomes
harder, and we wonder when we will see the sun again. But we carry those
experiences of purple summer with us, and that makes us stronger. The
wounds, the rushes of ecstasy, the memories of first lust and love all stay
with us long after those experiences are over.
For myself and for all the seniors involved in Spring Awakening, working on
this beautiful show has been the perfect capstone to the purple summers
that our Princeton careers have been. Together with our fantastic company,
we have reflected on our own adolescent experiences as we crafted those of
the characters.
We hope that their stories lead you to consider how our own purple
summers shape us all and inspire the communities we build together.
Thank you for letting us share our “Song of Purple Summer” with you.
Enjoy the show.

How I Learned to Drive
One of the most discomfiting love stories to emerge from the American theater,
Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive is a warm, tragic, funny, and strikingly
perceptive memory play in which a young woman looks back on her warped
experience with love and struggles to forgive in the face of her past sexual trauma.
