Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week
Matt Hall, Jr., LHP, Missouri State
Matt Hall struck out a career-high 15 batters over a dominant seven-inning performance that propelled the Bears to a 9-1 victory over Wichita State Saturday
afternoon, paving the way to an MVC series sweep of the Shockers and Missouri
State’s seventh consecutive series win. The junior surrendered a single run on just
two singles over his 7.0 frames, recording seven consecutive outs via strikeouts over
a three-inning stretch that saw the Bears claim the lead for good. The left-hander,
who improved to 7-2 on the year with the victory, recorded multiple strikeouts in five of his seven innings
and came within one strikeout of matching Pierce Johnson’s Hammons Field record of 16, set on March
23, 2012 vs. Creighton. In all, Hall’s 15 K’s tied four other Missouri State hurlers for the fourth-best
single-game total in school history, just two shy of the Bears’ single-game record.
Other Notable Performances: David Koll (BU); Brandon Koch (DBU); Brent Jurceka (UE); Steve Heilenbach (ILS);
Austin Conway (INS); Colin Holderman (SIU).

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 12
MAY 4, 2015
MVC, On Tap
With just two weekends remaining in the league
schedule, Missouri State (12-3 MVC) still holds a
slim half-game lead over second-place Dallas Baptist (13-5 MVC). The Bears will travel to Southern
Illinois (6-12 MVC) this weekend, while the Patriots
will welcome San Francisco to Horner Ballpark this
weekend in a non-conference series.
Bradley (9-6 MVC) remains in third-place in the
league standings, sitting three games behind Missouri State, while a log jam towards the back half
of the standings exists between Evansville (8-10
MVC), Illinois State (6-9 MVC), Wichita State (6-9
MVC), Indiana State (6-12 MVC) and Southern Illinois (6-12 MVC).
The Braves will host the Redbirds this weekend,
while the Purple Aces travel to Wichita to take on
the Shockers. Indiana State will also take a break
from Valley action this weekend, welcoming SEMO
to Terre Haute for a three-game series.
Rank and File
Both Missouri State and Dallas Baptist remain in
numerous top-25 polls entering this week. The
Baseball America poll holds the highest ranking for
both teams, as the Bears check in at No. 13, while
the Patriots rank No. 14.
Valley RPI Ranks No. 6
According to the latest RPI update from WarrenNolan.com (May 4), the Missouri Valley Conference
ranks No. 6 amongst 32 leagues. Four of the Power-Five conferences (Big 12, ACC, Pac-12 and SEC)
hold four of the top five positions, while the American Athletic Conference is the only non-Power Five
league ahead of the MVC.
Three in RPI’s Top-20
Three league teams rank in the top-20 of the RPI,
led by Dallas Baptist (No. 1), Missouri State (No. 10)
and Bradley (No. 17).
The Company We Keep
With Dallas Baptist (No. 1) and Missouri State (No.
10) each in the RPI’s top-10, the Missouri Valley
Conference joins the SEC (No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 6
LSU and No. 9 Florida) and the ACC (No. 3 Miami
and No. 7 Florida State), which also have two at
least teams in the RPI’s top-10.
More Good Company
Carroll Gets Win No. 200
Evansville head coach Wes Carroll earned his
200th career win for the Purple Aces after a 4-3 victory Friday night over visiting Southern Illinois. His
201 career victories rank third in the Valley among
active coaches, trailing Missouri State’s Keith Guttin (1,123) and Dallas Baptist’s Dan Heefner (294).
Against the Field
The MVC holds a winning record against 14 leagues
in non-conference play (Atlantic Sun, Big East, Conference USA, Mid-American, Metro Atlantic, Mountain West, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Pac-12, Southland, SWAC, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast), and
at least a .500 record against another two leagues
(Atlantic-10 and Horizon).
Top-25 Victories
The MVC has won 10 games against top-25 opponents so far this season, as Dallas Baptist leads the
way with three victories over ranked opponents (No.
4 TCU, No. 21 Baylor and No. 23 Oklahoma). Missouri State (No. 14 Missouri and No. 20 Missouri)
and Wichita State (No. 14 UC Santa Barbara and
No. 25 Oklahoma) each have two victories over top25 opponents, while Bradley (No. 14 Iowa), Indiana
State (No. 1 Vanderbilt) and Southern Illinois (No.
19 Illinois) have each won one game against a top25 opponent this season.
In the last five seasons, the Valley has only registered five or more victories against top-25 teams
twice, notching seven wins in 2011 and five victories over ranked opponents in 2014.
Award Nominees Galore
The bevy of mid-season award watch lists has several Missouri Valley Conference student-athletes as
nominees for national awards.
Illinois State’s Paul DeJong and Missouri State’s
Jon Harris are among 60 players on the Golden
Spikes Award watch list, which honors the top baseball player in the country.
The Missouri Valley Conference boasts a 125-97
(.582) in non-conference action (through games of
Sunday, May 3), which currently ranks 22nd best
all-time in terms of winning percentage. In the 21
previous with a higher winning percentage than this
year’s .582, the league earned two or more NCAA
Tournament bids in all but six seasons.
Below are the best non-league results, dating back
to 1981, as well as the number of post-season bids
registered each season:

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 12
MAY 4, 2015
NOTEWORTHY
In addition to the league’s player and newcomer of the week selections, several conference players had notable performances, and
they include:
Drew Carlile (BU) – Bradley starting catcher in all four
games last week, Carlile hit .500 (8-16) with a double and two
home runs, helping the Braves to a 2-2 week that included
a series win at Indiana State. Carlile also drew two walks,
was hit by a pitch, and laid down a sacrifice bunt in his 20
plate appearances for the week, giving him a .579 on-base
percentage to go along with his .938 slugging percentage
for the week. Carlile was 3-for-4 with a walk Wednesday. He
had a RBI single in the eighth to pull the Braves within 5-4
and added another single in the 10th inning at Milwaukee.
Carlile’s 2-run home run in the eighth inning Friday put
Bradley ahead, 3-2, in the eventual 5-2 win at Indiana State.
Carlile added his team-leading sixth home run of the season
Saturday, a solo shot in the seventh inning for a 3-1 lead.
Kevin Kaczmarski (UE) –
Kaczmarski led Evansville
to four more wins this week including a season-high five
game winning streak and a series win over Southern Illinois.
Kaczmarski led the Purple Aces in batting average (.526),
hits (10), triples (2), total bases (14), slugging percentage
(.737), walks (4), and on-base percentage (.609). He also
had seven runs scored, two doubles and eight runs batted
in which all ranked second on UE. Kaczmarski began the
week going 2-for-5 against Indiana with a run scored, a
triple, and thee runs batted in. His performance guided
Evansville to a season sweep of the Hoosiers. Kaczmarski
then went 3-for-4 the next night with three runs scored and
a season-best four runs batted in during a 15-2 victory over
Oakland City. He added another hit and two runs scored in
a series-opening 4-3 win over Southern Illinois on May 1.
Kaczmarski then reached four base times on May 2, going
2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and two walks. He ended
the week with a 2-for-4 performance on May 3 with two more
doubles. Kaczmarski’s pair of doubles gives him 63 in his UE
career, moving into third place for most in program history.
His .464 batting average and .543 on-base percentage lead
the country in both categories.
Joe Kelch (ILS) – Kelch turned in one of his best weeks
of the season, as he batted .353/.368/.529 over a fivegame stretch. Kelch hit safely in all five contests, starting
each at second base. He had his best game of the week in
the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader against SIUE, as
he tallied four RBIs, thanks to a three-run home run and a
sacrifice fly. For the week, he collected six hits and six RBIs,
while scoring a pair of runs.
Andy Young (INS) – Young continues to stay hot at the
plate this season. Young finished last week 8-for-18 with
a home run and two doubles. Young started at third base
in all four games, hitting in the third and fourth spot of the
ISU lineup, and recording multiple hits in three of the four
games. Against IU, Young finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored,
including the go-ahead run in the 10th in a 6-5 victory. In the
opener with Bradley, Young made his one hit count, hitting a
solo home run to start the sixth inning. In ISU’s victory over
Bradley, Young went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the ninth inning
to tie the game at 3-3 before ISU would walk-off on a single
from the next hitter. Young ended the week on a high note,
going 2-for-5 with a double, a single and scored a run in the
7-6 loss to end the week.
Justin Paulsen (MSU) – Paulsen batted .500 and drove
in six runs to power a potent Missouri State offense that
outscored the opposition by a 33-14 margin in a perfect
4-0 week for the Bears. Paulsen, who also played error-free
baseball in 41 defensive chances at first, was especially
effective in MSU’s three-game MVC series sweep of Wichita
State over the weekend, going 7-for-12 with five RBIs against
the Shockers. In Friday’s 8-3 series-opening win, he doubled
and scored a run and singled home another, then plated
two more tallies with run-scoring singles in Saturday’s 9-1
victory. The sophomore saved his best for Sunday’s finale,
driving in the game’s first run with a second-inning base
hit before starting another scoring rally with a single in the
fourth. Finally, Paulsen delivered the decisive blow with a
walk-off RBI single in the home half of the 10th to wrap up
the Bears’ seventh-straight series win.
Logan Blackfan (SIU) – Blackfan continued to hit the ball
well this past week, picking up three more doubles to push
his season total to 19. His 19 doubles leads the MVC and is
now tied for eighth-place for most doubles in a season in SIU
history. Against Evansville on May 2, Blackfan went 2-for-3
with three RBI. Both of his hits in the game were doubles.
In SIU’s 5-4 win against Evansville on May 3, Blackfan also
went 2-of-3 with a double and a run scored.
David Koll (BU) – Koll made two extended appearances
during the week, finishing 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 10.0 innings pitched. Koll worked out of the bullpen Wednesday at
Milwaukee and held the Panthers scoreless on three hits
in 4.1 innings, allowing the Braves to rally from a 5-2 deficit
when he entered in the fifth to force extra innings. Despite
throwing 68 pitches Wednesday at Milwaukee, Koll was
Bradley’s emergency starter Sunday at Indiana State and
he earned the win by allowing three runs on nine hits in 5.2
innings. Sunday’s effort helped Bradley secure its fourth
Valley series win of the year and came after 12 consecutive
relief appearances. Koll had extended his personal scoreless streak to 13.2 innings before Indiana State scored in
the third inning Sunday.
Brandon Koch (DBU) – Koch earned three saves and did
not allow a run over 4.1 innings of work. Of the 13 outs Koch
recorded, nine were strikeouts and he surrendered just one
hit, while walking just two. In the Patriots’ win over No. 4 TCU
on Wednesday, Koch came out of the pen in the eighth inning
with two outs and the tying run standing at the plate. The
Patriots closer would record a strikeout to to get out of the
inning and then struck out the side in the ninth to preserve
the win. On Friday, Koch closed out UNC Charlotte in the
ninth inning, as he extended his streak of 12 consecutive
outs recorded as all strikeouts. In the series finale on Sunday
versus the 49ers, Koch worked two-and-two-third innings of
scoreless relief and struck out four to help lift DBU to a 6-5
win and a series sweep.
Brent Jurceka (UE) – The Purple Aces closer was 1-0 with
a save and an ERA of 0.00 in three appearances this week.
Jurceka helped UE achieve a season-high five wins in a row
and a weekend series win over Southern Illinois. Jurceka
pitched the final inning in an 8-4 home win over Indiana on
April 28, completing a season sweep of the Hoosiers for UE.
He then recorded a five out save, limiting Southern Illinois to
one hit in a 4-3 series opening win for the Purple Aces on May
1. Jurceka then bounced back the next afternoon to pitch
the final 2.1 innings for the win in the UE 6-5 victory against
SIU. He pitched a total of 5.0 innings on the week, allowing
just three hits, two walks, and no runs. Opponents hit just
.176 against Jurceka as Evansville went 4-1 this past week.

MVC Players and Pitchers of the Week are selected each week during
the baseball season. The players are announced on Monday afternoon and appear in a weekly press release. Nominees are provided
by each school’s sports information contact and voted on by a panel
appointed by the league office.
Steve Heilenbach (ILS) – Heilenbach came within one
out of pitching Illinois State’s first nine-inning, completegame shutout in nearly two years, but had to settle for a
nine-inning, one-run complete game in Sunday’s 7-1 victory
over visiting SIUE. Heilenbach pitched the first nine-inning
complete game of his collegiate career Sunday, the Redbirds
first of the 2015 season. He scattered four hits and walked
just one, while striking out three. Heilenbach lowered his
ERA to 4.17 with Sunday’s effort.
Austin Conway (INS) – Conway has solidified his spot
on the back end of the Sycamore pitching staff. Conway
appeared in three of four games last week, and picked up
the win against Indiana in an extra-inning contest. Against
IU, Conway went 3.0 innings without allowing a hit, walking
one and striking out five Hoosiers. In the series opener
with Bradley, Conway inherited a runner and stranded him
on base, striking out the final two outs of the inning to keep
the game at 3-2 Bradley in the eighth inning. In the finale
Sunday, Conway logged 3.1 shutout innings, while striking
out two Braves. During the week Conway held hitters to a
.167 average against and allowed one free pass.
Colin Holderman (SIU) – Holderman came out of the
bullpen and pitched 4.2 innings in SIU’s win against Evansville on May 3. The freshman RHP entered the game with
the bases loaded and was able to get a strikeout and a
groundball out to keep Southern ahead of the Purple Aces.
Holderman finished the game with four strikeouts, giving up
a run on five hits in his second win of the season.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 12
MAY 4, 2015
DALLAS BAPTIST (36-9, 13-5 MVC)
BRADLEY (31-13, 9-6 MVC)
Season of Overcoming
Bradley continues to win despite a rash of injuries and illness to strike the
Braves. Leadoff hitter Chris Godinez went down with a hamstring injury
in the sixth inning Wednesday at Milwaukee and did not play during the
Indiana State series. Godinez drew two walks Wednesday at Milwaukee
before the injury, raising his on-base percentage to .485. Centerfielder
Isaac Smith began the week as the third-leading hitter in the Missouri
Valley Conference with a .365 average, but missed Wednesday’s game at
Milwaukee due to illness. Junior lefty Cameron Roegner (3-0, 3.95 ERA) came out of Wednesday’s
start at Milwaukee after just one inning and did not pitch at Indiana State, where the Braves also
skipped Saturday’s scheduled start for junior righty Steve Adkins (6-2, 2.87 ERA).
Winning Away from Home
By picking up two more road wins this past week, Bradley improved to 21-9 away from home this
season. The Braves are tied for third nationally with their 21 wins away from home, trailing only
Connecticut (24-13) and Illinois (23-4-1) for the most wins away from home this season. At 13-8
in true road games and 8-1 on neutral diamonds, Bradley’s 21 wins away from home are the
most by the Braves since 1996, when the Braves won 22 games away from home by going 11-11
in true road games and 11-4 on neutral fields. Bradley has at least five games away from home
remaining, a 3-game series at Missouri State to end the regular season and at least two games
in the MVC Tournament at Wichita State.
30 Wins for the 15th Time
Bradley earned its 30th win of the season Friday at Indiana State (5-2), then added its 31st win
of the year by also taking the weekend series against the Sycamores with a 7-6 decision. Bradley
now has won at least 30 games in a season for the 15th time in the program’s 115-year history.
The 31 wins are the most since 2007 (32-21).

for the Senior CLASS Award for baseball. His .464 batting average
and .543 on-base percentage currently lead the nation and he
extended his hitting streak to 19 consecutive games last week.
Illinois State won its first series of the season when losing the
first game of the series last weekend against SIUE. The Redbirds
came up short in a 4-1 loss to the Cougars on Friday, but swept a
doubleheader on Saturday and won again Sunday to claim a 3-1
series win. It was the first series win for the Redbirds after dropping
the opener since last April 18-20, at Missouri State.
Approaching History
Statistically Speaking
Statistically, Evansville is led offensively by outfielder Kevin Kaczmarski. His .464 batting
average, 71 hits, 16 doubles, six triples, 111 total bases, a .725 slugging percentage
and a .543 on base percentage and 12 stolen bases are all team-highs. Outfielder Josh
Jyawook (.333), outfielder Jarod Perry (.311) and infielder Jonathan Ramon (.300) also
have batting averages at or above .300 for the Purple Aces. Ramon has a team-best five
home runs and 45 RBI. Right-hander Ryan Billo has a team-low 3.05 ERA. Eight different
Evansville pitchers have recorded at least one win including six from Billo and left-hander
Brodie Harkness. The team is cumulatively hitting .275 this season with a 4.57 team ERA.
Carroll Gets Win No. 200
A pair of Illinois State pitchers are close to etching their names in the Redbird records
book, as Jacob Hendren is one win from matching the single-season school record of 10
wins, while reliever Jake Sale needs five more appearances to match the school record.
Both Hendren and Sale lead the Valley in the respective categories.
Finishing What He Started
Steve Heilenbach pitched Illinois State’s first nine-inning complete game in nearly two
years when he went the distance in Sunday’s 7-1 win over SIUE. Heilenbach was one out
from a complete-game shutout, but had to settle for an outing in which he allowed just
one run on four hits and one walk, while striking out three.
Evansville head coach Wes Carroll earned his 200th career win for the Purple Aces after a
4-3 victory Friday night over visiting Southern Illinois. His 201 career victories rank third in
the Valley among active coaches, trailing Missouri State’s Keith Guttin (1,123) and Dallas
Baptist’s Dan Heefner (294).

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 12
MAY 4, 2015
INDIANA STATE (21-23, 6-12 MVC)
Cardiac Trees
Bears Amazing in April
The Sycamores have had their fair share of close victories over the last
two weeks, including winning in their final at-bat against Indiana and
walking off against Bradley. In Indiana State’s last five wins, three have
been walk-offs at Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium, as well as two on
the road being in the Sycamores last at-bat. Against the Hoosiers it was
a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to tie it before a sacrifice fly
scored the game-winning run in the 10th and against Purdue over a week
ago, a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth proved to be the difference in the 7-6 win.
After a strong finish to March that saw Missouri State win nine of its final
10 games, the month of April also proved to be a success for the Bears,
who logged 13 wins in 16 contests from April 2-28. Missouri State’s
0.813 win percentage in the month represented its third-best April mark
ever, trailing only a 20-3 month in 1990 and an 18-4 showing in 1980.
Furthermore, the 13-3 record is the Bears’ best in any single month since
May 2005, when they went 12-2 to close the season.
A Night to Remember at Hammons
More from Moore
Kaden Moore went 6-for-16 last week, hitting .375 with two doubles and a home run. The catcher
also scored three runs and knocked in two. Moore started in all four games, and caught four of
five base runners attempting to steal against Indiana State, while picking off a runner against
Indiana. In the Sycamores’ walk-off against Bradley, Moore reached on a bunt base hit to load
the bases and put Indiana State in a chance to earn the dramatic victory.
Tater Total
Indiana State has hit 25 home runs during the 2015 season, surpassing last season’s total by
11 in nine fewer games. The Sycamores had four different players go yard last week, with Hunter
Owen leading the way with two. Landon Curry hit his second-career home run in the top of the
ninth inning against the Hoosiers to tie the game before Indiana State eventually won in the
tenth. Andy Young and Kaden Moore also hit home runs as the Sycamores hit at least one home
run in every game last week.

The Bears’ 13-8 win over Missouri Tuesday evening at Hammons Field not only secured Missouri
State’s first season sweep of the Tigers in four years, but also brought out the Bears’ largest home
crowd in over 11 years. The official attendance of 6,497 represented not only the largest home
crowd for any MVC club this season, but also the third-largest MSU crowd in the 12-season history
of the facility and the biggest to ever witness a Missouri State home win. MSU, which had not drawn
more than 3,000 fans since a 2007 game with MU, welcomed its biggest gathering since 8,312
spectators saw Mizzou claim a 5-4 win on April 14, 2004. The only larger crowd came out on opening night of that season to witness a 3-2 Southern Illinois victory in the stadium’s debut contest.
Hall Closes In On Strikeout Mark
Not only did junior pitcher Matt Hall top the 200-strikeout mark for his Missouri State career in
Saturday’s 9-1 victory over Wichita State, but the lefty moved to within nine K’s of Pierce Johnson’s
MSU single-season record of 119, set in 2012. Hall’s 15-strikeout performance vs. WSU matched
four other MSU hurlers for the fourth-best single-game total in school history, just two shy of the
Bears’ single-game record of 17, shared by Gary Wilson (March 23, 1967 vs. Oklahoma Christian)
and Charles Burt (May 16, 1969 vs. Northwest Missouri State) and just one behind Johnson’s
Hammons Field-record of 16 against Creighton (March 23, 2012).

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 12
MAY 4, 2015
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (11-38, 6-12 MVC)
WICHITA STATE (18-29, 6-9 MVC)
In the Record Books
Comeback Kids
Freshman Logan Blackfan made his way into the SIU record
books with his 19th double of the season. He now ranks tied for
eighth-place. With one more double he will move into a tie for
fifth-place. He is five doubles shy of tying SIU’s all-time singleseason record of 24.
Wichita State was down 6-0 to No. 25 Oklahoma on Tuesday and
came back to win, 9-8. It was the first time the Shockers overcame
a deficit of six or more runs in a win since April 22, 2006, against
Bradley when they came back from an eight-run deficit.
Kihle Continues Hot Streak
Saluki Regulars
Infielders Chase Slone and Will Farmer are the only two players on Southern Illinois’
roster to play and start all 49 games this season.
Junior outfielder Daniel Kihle continues to play well in Missouri Valley Conference action.
In 15 games, he is now hitting .400 with 14 runs, one double, three home runs, 10 RBI,
nine walks and three stolen bases.
Turn Two
Fresh Legs
Southern Illinois has turned 46 double-plays this season, which leads the MVC.
