July News From Needles & Pins Welcome to Summer! July brings us the start of the 2014 Row by Row Quilt Experience with the theme “Sew The Seasons.” From now until September 2nd, you can stop in at participating shops across the country for free row quilt patterns. If you assemble at least eight rows into a finished quilt by October 31st and are the first person to bring a finished quilt into a Row by Row shop, you’ll win 25 fat quarters. Complete information can be found at the website: www.rowbyrowexperience.com. We’re excited to share our row, “Frederick Through The Year.” This fusible applique project highlights some of Frederick city and county’s best-known sites and seasonal activities, including the city’s many fountains and the stone bridge over Carroll Creek, the historic covered bridges of the county, the Baker Park Carillon and winter’s popular Fire & Ice event. Stop by to see our model and pick up a copy of the pattern, which includes a color photo and a description of each scene. If you aren’t going to be in the Frederick area this summer, you can have someone stop by for you, but remember that we cannot mail the pattern or distribute it online. Half the fun of the Row by Row Experience is visiting quilt shops wherever you go this summer! Enjoy! Twist Away Your Summer! Join us for a class on the throw-sized (51”x63”) version of Twister Illusions on Thursday, August 7th, 10 am to 4 pm. $65 includes pattern and ruler. If you haven’t had a chance to join us before, do come out to see Laurel Wreath and Garden Maze. Keep an eye out for a fall event showcasing all the quilts from this very useful book. And, if you’re looking for a book of great scrap quilts in multiple sizes—this one is a great choice! Page 3 What’s New With Designer Kim Diehl - Join Us For Simple Whatnots Popular fabric and quilt designer Kim Diehl has joined with Henry Glass Fabrics to create the Simple Whatnots Club for shops that purchase her complete fabric lines. Over the years we’ve made a lot of Kim’s quilt designs, so this group seemed just right for us. We kicked off our Simple Whatnots gathering in June and were delighted to have 8 interested participants with us. Given the interest, we’ll continue our 3rd Saturday afternoon time slot (July 19th at 1 pm) and we’re happy to welcome you to join us. We’ll have free small quilt patterns to share, as well as tips from Kim (and us) on techniques, fabric choices and more. June attendees noted their interest in seeing larger projects from Kim’s books, so we’ll be adding that to the mix as well. We’re awaiting the arrival of the new fabric line, Vintage Farmhouse, as we send out this newsletter, but it should be arriving very soon. If you weren’t with us in June, please call to let us know you’ll be with us in July. It will help with table arrangements! Call to let us know what colors you’d like to have and we’ll be sure to have those on hand for you. We also have cone stands needed for use with your sewing machine. Don’t forget Terry Atkinson’s Happy Holidays pattern when you’re looking for a great summer table topper! You’ll use your 60 degree triangle ruler for this. We have great summer fabrics for this project— including the flip flops in our model! Summer fabrics and holiday prints are sharing space in the “what’s new” cabinet these days. Perfect choices for summer projects and getting a head start on the fall. Summer Sewing Room Clean-Up If you are escaping some of the summer heat by staying in the sewing room, now’s the time to clean up, sort out and get a handle on projects. We have archival tissue paper and boxes for quilt storage and fabric organizer boards. You can both use up some fabric and make storage with Terry Atkinson’s Bucket Brigade pattern. Easy to make and washable, too. While you are organizing, make a list (and/or take photos) of projects still in need of fabrics and supplies. You’ll have the reference you need when visiting quilt shops this summer. Quilts of Valor and Other Charitable Projects Continue Please remember that our Quilts of Valor project for Charlotte Hall Veterans Home and Assisted Living continues through the year. We accept your donations at any time, and summer may be the perfect time to fin- ish up a project you’ve had on the books for some time. We also continue to accept baby quilts and tops and pillowcases for various programs throughout the county. You can also make donations to the food bank when you attend our free classes and groups!
