The Versatile Tent Stitch
The traditional stitch for canvaswork is the tent stitch, worked as
basketweave or continental. Where possible, it is best to use basketweave to reduce canvas distortion. In some cases, particularly for small
areas, continental stitch must be used.
Kimberly has created new diagrams showing the path to follow
for both right-handed and left-handed stitchers. When working basketweave, you must “read” the canvas weave. You will see that mono canvas has steps (horizontal bars) and poles (vertical bars).
Right-handed stitchers work the stitch from lower left corner to
upper right corner of each intersection and go up the steps (green
stitches) and down the poles (blue stitches). Left-handed stitchers work
the stitch from the upper right corner to the lower left corner of each intersection, working the stitches down the steps (green stitches) and up
the poles (blue stitches).
Continental stitch is worked in rows going back and forth. The
path for continental is shown in the diagram above on the right.
