This and That from Immanuel

January 14, 2011
Dear Immanuel family,
Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Alex Pankow, one of our graduating eighth graders. Alex recently won our school
spelling bee, and earned the top score on the Milwaukee Lutheran placement test. I asked him what he learned at Immanuel.
One of the things is not just taking the test on the information but actually learning it. The difference between homework and studying: homework is just what you have to do and studying is what makes you really learn and retain the information. The classes really
set you up for success in high school like science and history and especially math with the advanced program. History has special
projects for advanced group, too.
What opportunities have you had at Immanuel?
They kind of pushed me. The teachers don’t always show you the way to go but they point out the path, and by making mistakes you
find out the way to go. The teachers help you figure out what to do yourself but they don’t tell you what to do, just give you the tools
for what you do.
Sports gave me a great opportunity to test out what sports I like that I might play later in school or just for fun. There are no cuts so
you can try out any sport.
In addition to playing every sport, Alex has been in chess club, yearbook, and attended basketball camps in the summer.
I’ve been in cub scouts since first grade right here at Immanuel so I knew the kids and that helps. I’m working on my Eagle Scout
project. I’m looking for an opportunity to help at Immanuel, maybe something outdoors.

Discover the Undetected Vision Problems that Affect Learning
In a special presentation to Immanuel Lutheran on Thursday, February 10, from 6:30-8:00pm, Dr. Kellye Knueppel will
discuss undetected vision problems and the critical link between vision and learning in her presentation “Vision Problems and Learning: Why Bright Students Struggle in School. Dr. Knueppel is a developmental optometrist at The Vision

whose learning skills were impaired due to vision problems. She’ll discuss:
How vision skills can affect your child’s learning
What types of symptoms your child may exhibit
How a vision problem affects different subjects like math and reading
What are the visual stressors in a classroom that may affect your child

Each $2000 raised will buy one classroom ceiling. Please help us add computers to our library for the Grand Re-Opening this fall. No
