MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT, David Kurlinkus
The end of the 2014-15 school year is rapidly approaching. On May 23, the senior class will participate in
commencement at the BMO Harris Center in Rockford,
joining the alumni of Hononegah Community High
School. We will send our best wishes with them as
they leave HCHS to pursue their future plans.
I know I spend too much of this monthly communication
talking about financial issues regarding the district. I
truly believe that Hononegah continues to do a good
job of providing the best education for our students
with our tax dollars. Sure, there are improvements
and additions to our programs that could be made if
money were no object, but it is, and that must always
be considered.
Hononegah is not perfect, although we aspire to be.
We have problems, and we are going to continue to
have them. What we do have, as I have repeated numerous times, is a community that is supportive of
public education, a community that is interested in
educating its students in the best way possible. Hononegah benefits from this atmosphere of educational
support just as do our elementary school districts.
In order to solicit and maintain support from the community, the administration and the Board have come
up with a unique idea—we listen. We spend quite a
bit of time at our Board meetings and through phone
calls and emails hearing from people in the District.
Most of the communications to Board members are
referred to the District administration for investigation and
review. Whether the communication or request starts
with a Board member or an adm i ni st rat o r, the
communication returns to the Board, usually to a
committee, for more discussion and possible action
by the Board. Sometimes we are unable to ultimately
solve the problem or issue brought to our attention,
sometimes we are, but the communication must remain
open.
Last month, on April 22, the annual strategic planning
update was held. Each year a group of community
members, parents, students, staff and Board members
attend a day-long meeting to evaluate and review
progress on the District’s Strategic Plan, including
revising it as necessary. The Strategic Plan is a fiveyear process to determine the direction and goals of
the District. This is another opportunity for the District to
communicate with its various stakeholder groups in order
to come to a consensus of where Hononegah should
be headed.
It was a great experience with much good dialog.
The strength of the District was obvious, because so
many people gave of their time to review the plans
for Hononegah’s future. After all of the opinions had
been expressed, the number one priority was reaffirmed—the commitment to provide the best education
possible for our students. That remains our prime
directive.
Our regular Board meetings are on the third Wednesday
of each month at 7 p.m. in the school library. If you
are interested in being placed on the agenda to speak
or would like to attend a committee meeting where
most of our planning is done, please call the district

Congratulations to the Class of 2015 and their families,
Our hope is that all graduating students will have an enjoyable and rewarding finish to their tenure as students at Hononegah Community High
School. I ask that you carefully review the following information to ensure a smooth finish to the year.
I am writing to provide you with specific information regarding the end of the school year, graduation practice, and graduation. Hopefully, this
information will answer many of your questions. If not, please contact the Principal’s Office 815-624-5005.
END OF SCHOOL: The last day of student attendance for graduating seniors will be Friday, May 15, 2015. Prior to leaving school that day, seniors must complete and turn in their clearance slip signifying that all school materials have been returned and all financial obligations have been
met. They should also clean out their locker. All items left will be donated to a local charity.
FINAL EXAMS: Teachers are not required to administer final exams to seniors except in situations where successful completion of a course is
dependent upon the student passing an exam. Teachers may administer exams to seniors in any course. It is a teacher choice and decision. Exams
must be completed by the end of the day on Friday, May 15, 2015.
APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR: Seniors are expected to behave appropriately at school and at all school functions. Seniors who receive consequences for behavior choices (teacher detentions, suspensions, etc.) must have these obligations fulfilled before Friday, May 15, 2015. If a senior
has not fulfilled his/her consequence, he/she will not be allowed to participate in the Graduation Ceremony. Senior class pranks will not be
tolerated and may result in a loss of participation in the Graduation Ceremony. Criminal charges will be filed where appropriate.
GRADUATION REHEARSAL: Rehearsal will be on Friday, May 22, 2015, at 4 p.m. in the gym at Hononegah Community High School.
Students MUST ATTEND THE REHEARSAL in order to participate in the graduation ceremony--so make plans now with employers, etc. The
rehearsal will last approximately one hour. All speakers will practice afterwards. A copy of each speech must be given to the Principal at that time.
Students do not wear cap and gown for practice.
GRADUATION CEREMONY: The Graduation Ceremony will be held at the BMO Harris Centre at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2015. You
will not need tickets to attend the ceremony. The BMO Harris Centre doors will be opened to the public at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23. Spectators should enter through the main entrance—lower lobby.

Graduates will also enter through the main entrance of the building. Graduates need to arrive no later than 1:15 p.m.

The City of Rockford will be charging a $5 parking fee in parking decks and flat lots. Parking meters typically are 1 hour or less around the
building.

Parents and guests are not permitted on the main floor of the Metro Centre before and during the commencement exercise. Remember that we
have scheduled professional photographers to take pictures. The purchase of pictures is optional. This service is being made available so
that parents do not have to leave their seats to take pictures of this particular event. The presenters will be available for a short time following
the ceremony should you desire to take a close-up photo.

Seating for the disabled will be available. Enter through the main lobby and proceed directly to the nearest usher who will provide accommodations. Only one person will be allowed to accompany the disabled guest.

BMO Harris Bank Center will have their concessions open and no outside food or drink will be allowed.

The ceremony will begin promptly at 2 p.m. and should last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

After the ceremony, plan on meeting your graduate on Elm Street (located on the north side of the building). The recessional will take the
graduates immediately out of the building. Elm Street will be closed to traffic during our event. Make arrangements to meet at a location
away from the exit door to permit graduates and families to quickly disperse from the arena and area.

Appropriate Attire: There will be NO signs, messages, etc., on the gowns or the caps. There should be no flowers on the gown. Males
should wear dress slacks, shirt with collar, dress shoes and females should wear a dress, blouse and skirt or dress pants with dress
shoes and bring bobby pins to hold cap in place. Cap and Gown are REQUIRED. Please iron your gown on low heat.
WE ARE ASKING FOR YOUR HELP: We hope that we can maintain a dignity around this important ceremony. Blown up beach balls,
bounced balls, squirted “silly string” and bull horns are not appropriate. Graduation parties are more appropriate for “celebrations of this nature.”
Please discuss this issue with your graduate. We want to do everything possible to make this activity a cherished memory for ALL of our students.
A good rule of thumb, if the action takes attention away from the ceremony and focuses on an individual or group of individuals, then it is inappropriate and unacceptable. Security will remove any individuals behaving inappropriately. Thank you in advance for your understanding and
cooperation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS NIGHT
The public is invited to attend Scholarship Awards Night, May 14, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
Scholarship recipients will receive an invitation to this ceremony. Organizations awarding financial scholarships to
Hononegah students are invited to recognize the award recipients this evening. Some organizations choose to
notify students at their own awards ceremony, by mail, or phone. The organization awarding the scholarship
will make the decision whether or not to acknowledge their scholarship recipients at Scholarship Awards
Night. Scholarships awarded by colleges are not presented this evening.
HONORS NIGHT
Hononegah Community High School’s annual Honors Night is May 18, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. This
evening is set aside to honor our students who have earned recognition for academics, community service, and
co-curricular activity involvement. Students are nominated by staff and community members for the different
awards presented that evening. The public is invited to attend; students who are being recognized will receive
an invitation to this special event.
REGISTRATION
Registration materials for the 2015-2016 school year will be mailed at the end of May. Again, Hononegah will
be requiring families to prove residency with mortgage paperwork, lease, and/or utility bills. Students CANNOT live
with district residents unless the resident has legal (court papers required) guardianship of the student. Falsifying
residency is a criminal offense (Class C misdemeanor) for both the resident who is falsifying the residency
AND the family enrolling.
GCP WANTS YOUR PICTURE!
Attention Class of 2015! The Guidance and Career Planning office has a favor to ask of you. After you have
decided which school you will attend in the fall of 2015, we would love to receive a picture of you standing by
a sign with the school’s name on it or by a campus landmark by October 1, 2015. The picture would be displayed in the GCP display case during the 2015-2016 school year. Your pictures will let HCHS students know
of alumni who are attending schools to which they are interested in applying. If you are interested in having
your picture displayed, please put your name and the name of the school on the back of the picture and mail it

NOTICE TO PARENTS REGARDING THE RIGHTS OF 18-YEAR OLDS
Under the Illinois School Student Records Act (ISSRA) a parent means a person who is the natural parent of
the child or other person who has the primary responsibility for the care and upbringing of the child. All rights
and privileges accorded to a parent under the ISSRA shall become exclusively those of the child upon the
child’s 18th birthday, graduation from secondary school, marriage or entry into military service, whichever
occurs first. Such rights and privileges may also be exercised by the child at any time with respect to the child's
permanent education record. (ISSRA, §2(g)).
What does this mean? When a student turns 18, the student has the right to remove the name of his or her parents
from the educational record, no longer allowing the parent access to his or her grades, discipline or attendance.
The student can decide to leave their parents on their educational record after he or she turns 18, with written
consent. In 2015-2016, upon a student turning 18, Hononegah staff will meet with the student and request
written permission to keep their parents on their educational records. Please be aware of this law and anticipate
having a conversation with your child about the importance of having access to his or her records in high
school.

GUIDANCE AND CAREER PLANNING
JUNIOR CAREER PLANNING CONFERENCES
The Junior students attended a classroom presentation to help with their career and college planning followed
by an individual appointment with their School Counselor in March and April. This appointment provides an
opportunity for the students to discuss their future goals, verify credits needed for graduation and college admissions, receive tips on the career and college search, and ask questions about admissions, financial aid, and
job interviews.
The Junior Parent Night presentation for parents and students in April provided valuable information regarding
the challenges of the college and career process. For students and parents who would like additional assistance, the following checklist can be used as a guide.

Review the material in your Junior Career Planning folder with a parent.

Register for the ACT/SAT test if you want to take the test more than once or have not done so yet.

Review your college choices and know their application requirements. If unsure about which colleges you
want to apply to, it is important that you continue to meet with college recruiters at Hononegah, attend college fairs (Rock Valley College Fair is October 2), do an on-line college search, and schedule campus visits.

Attend College and Scholarship Application Night at HCHS September 11.

Apply to colleges early in your senior year; try to submit your applications by November 1st.

Seniors may start requesting applications to be signed and Letters of Recommendation from their School
Counselors after the Schedule Change period is over in the fall.

CONCERNING GRADUATING SENIORS
Money in accounts over $5.00 will be refunded to parents. Senior accounts will be deactivated May 16.
Parents can request monies in accounts be transferred to underclassmen. This does not include incoming freshman.
Please call 815-624-5024 to transfer money to an underclassmen’s siblings account.
Parents who use the online system MYLUNCHMONEY.COM please be aware you must stop any automatic payment plan you may have set up for your senior.
CONCERNING UNDERCLASSMAN
New for 2015-16 SY Parents be aware there are changes coming to the automatic debit/credit card
system
MYLUNCHMONEY.COM website is upgrading to MYSCHOOLBUCKS.COM
We will offer the same convenient process with bright new features.
Parents please pay attention to alerts you will receive from MYLUNCHMONEY.COM. Concerning deposits for 2015-16 SY. You will be notified when to start putting money on the new system,
MYSCHOOLBUCKS.COM. Please log on from time to time to check the status so school lunch can
begin seamlessly for your student.
Students who have money on lunch accounts and were enrolled at Hononegah for the 2014-15 SY, the account balance will roll into the new MYSCHOOLBUCKS.COM for the 2015-16 SY.
Incoming freshman will not be imported until August when the rollover occurs. Money put on at registration will be deposited as soon as freshmen are imported to system.
OTHER IMPORTANT LUNCH ISSUES
School registrations are due at the end of June; please pay all fees then or work out a payment plan. If you
should qualify for free lunch you will be refunded registration fees.
If you qualify for reduced lunch you still must pay the fees. Filing a free /reduced form does not automatically qualify you for any consideration other than free or reduced lunch.
Free and reduced lunch applications and guidelines are published every year and are available after July 1st.
You may contact 815-624-5024 to be put on the list to receive one by mail, or you may check our website
and print one off.
When they become available, applications will be at the front desk for pick up as well as in the Guidance
and Principal’s Office.
An application must be filled out each year regardless of whether your situation has changed or not. The
guidelines and the applications are revised yearly.
After July 1st , if you or someone in your household are getting Medicaid, SNAP and or TANF benefits
through DCFS you will receive a letter. This is your notice that your child/children in that household
are eligible for free lunch benefits. If you refuse the free lunch benefits, you must fill out the form and
return for the file.
Hononegah is a separate high school district and uses a separate free and reduced lunch application for students in other districts. These records are not transferrable from one district to another per federal rule.

Message From The Nurse
ATTENTION JUNIOR (2016) PARENTS
The Illinois Department of Public Health has approved a new vaccination law that will be in effect for
the 2015-2016 school year. The new law will require students, upon entering the sixth and the twelfth grade
of any public, private, or parochial school, to receive an immunization containing meningococcal conjugate
vaccine (MCV4) in accordance with the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s
Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The immunization requirement consists of one dose
of the MCV4 vaccine for 6th grade entrance and 2 doses for 12th grade entrance, unless the first dose was initially administered to a child who was 16 years of age or older, in which case, only one dose would be required at 12th grade entrance. Hononegah Community High School participates in first day exclusion so this
immunization will be required for 2015-2016 Senior students.

ALICE emergency response system. The team continues to
meet to discuss and plan for next year’s student and staff
training and drills. If you have not had the opportunity to view A service of
the ALICE informational video produced at the beginning of Hononegah Community High School
the year, we encourage you to do so using the link below.
Please remind your students that the most important component of the ALICE program is remaining alert to
their environment and making staff members aware of concerning behavior. This simple step will help ensure
we are aware of potentially dangerous situations before they occur. As reminder, students and parents are
encouraged to use the “Tip 411” system. Students and parents can send a text code “HCHS” with their tip to
847411. Please note that “HCHS” must be included as the first four characters of the text message. Please direct questions regarding the ALICE system to associate principal Chad Dougherty.

Visual Image Photography (VIP) is the official photographer of Hononegah High School and is honored to be a part of
your senior experience. In order to appear in the yearbook, all seniors must have their photo taken by VIP. Photographs submitted from other studios will NOT be accepted into the yearbook.

We offer 4 types of sessions for your senior portraits:
1. Traditional Head and Shoulders Session: These are the photos that you will choose from for your yearbook. There
is no sitting fee for this session and you will have 7-10 proofs on the yearbook background to view.
2. Traditional Head and Shoulders Session with Cap and Gown: This session includes the traditional head and
shoulders images as well as additional images in your school’s cap and gown. The sitting fee is $15.00 and you will
have 10-20 proofs to view.
3. One Outfit Session: This session includes the traditional head and shoulders images along with additional poses and
backdrops in the same outfit. Personalize this session with props or buddy shots with friends for no extra charge! The
sitting fee is $25.00 and you will have 25-30 proofs to view. Cap & Gown photos can be added for $5.
4. Two Outfit Session: This session includes the traditional head and shoulders images along with additional poses and
backdrops in your yearbook outfit, plus one change of clothes. Personalize this session with props or buddy shots with
friends for no extra charge! The sitting fee is $35.00 and you will have 40-45 images to view. Cap & Gown photos can
be added for $5.
Proofs will be available online, and photos can be ordered from any of the 4 types of sessions. Package and pricing information will be provided after your photo session.
Proof Books: VIP provides free online viewing for all photographed seniors. You may also purchase a proof book for
$25.00. The proof book is an 8.5 x 11 spiral bound book containing all of the images from your senior’s session, along
with coupons to be used towards your print order. NOTE: Proof book and online images will be watermarked and have
not yet been color corrected, retouched or cropped.
Yearbook Deadline: Your photo selection must be submitted to VIP by October 11, 2015 in order to appear in your
school’s yearbook. If you do not select an image, one will be selected for you by VIP. NOTE: This date is set by your
school and can’t be extended. Information regarding how to submit your yearbook selection to VIP will be provided after your photo session. All photo sessions will take place at Hononegah High School.

1. Classes begin at 8:50 a.m. each exam day.
2. School is dismissed at 2:02 p.m. on Thursday and buses will run at 3:15 p.m. School is dismissed at 12:16
p.m. on Friday and Monday except for students with make-up tests, rescheduled tests, and 1st period
class. Buses will leave at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 29 and Monday, June 1.
3. NO HOT LUNCHES will be served during exam days. Café 2 will be open for breakfast and breaks.
4. Students are expected to be in their assigned areas at all times if they are in the building. Students are
not required to be in the building if they do not have a scheduled test.
5. Students should not return to the building until passing periods. If they do return early, they are to immediately report to the AP Room and not be in the hallways.
6. NO STUDENT is allowed to take the test without turning in his/her assigned textbook or filling out a
“Lost Textbook Form”.
7. ALL STUDENTS MUST ATTEND ALL ASSIGNED TEST PERIODS. There is to be an assessment of some kind
given during the assigned period.
8. Students may not reschedule tests without permission from the Discipline/Attendance Office.

Model UN Students at ROCKMUN
On April 11th the Hononegah Model UN team out-negotiated the competition at ROCKMUN hosted at Rock
Valley college bringing home the majority of awards. Wyatt Reid (2015) and Emily Bell (2018) wrote an
award winning position paper representing the United Kingdom. As Bangladesh, Mia Durkee (2015) and Rafael
Davila (2016) earned honorable mention. Genevieve Marvin (2016) and Tengi Shiga (2017) as Germany
brought home BOTH a position paper award AND recognition as a 'Distinguished Delegation'. The top award
of the day, Outstanding Delegation, is Hononegah's due to the excellent diplomacy of Ben Halom (2016) and
Nina Kostic (2016) representing Montenegro. Job well done!

Stand Up To Cancer
The Stand Up To Cancer club held its annual
March fundraiser. This year it was "Raise a
Star". Students and staff could place a star, arrow or plaque on the wall in honor or memory
of someone they know with cancer. The clubs
efforts raised $100, which will be sent directly
to the Stand Up To Cancer Organization. Thank you to everyone who helped us in
this effort.

Classes & Clubs
More Microsoft Office Certifications Earned in Office Applications Classes.
Congratulations to the 32 students in Office Applications classes who earned their Microsoft Office Specialist
(MOS) certifications in Excel last month. This is the first semester the Excel test has been offered in the Office
Applications class. These classes will also have the opportunity to earn their MOS certifications in Word at
the end of the semester. Ms. Bowman and the Business department would like to congratulate the students for
their hard work. Great Job!!

Honors
Biology
Students in Honors Biology have partnered with Whitman Post Elementary School in a book exchange. The
freshman students researched different diseases, wrote and illustrated children’s books specifically targeted
toward the elementary students. The books included an “About the Author” page that gave the students a
chance to share a picture and tell something about themselves.
Kelly Baumgartner, librarian for the Rockton School District, recruited twelve different classes to participate
in the program. The elementary students will read the books in partners. They will then write a short essay
about what they learned and attach an autobiography of themselves.
This project helps to promote scientific literacy and develop relationships within the Hononegah Community.

CHARACTER COMMITTEE
Coming off its monumental success hosting the recent Character Slam event, the Hononegah Character Education Committee is now focusing on awarding its first ever Grit Scholarships. Faculty have recommended
several graduating seniors who are notable for their demonstrations of Grit, Optimism, and Growth Mindset.
These students then submitted personal essays or powerpoint presentations in order to be considered for the
scholarship. The Character Education Committee is in the process of reviewing the nominations and the essays, and will decide on the recipient or recipients in the coming days. So far, the selection process has been
difficult, because so many great students have applied! The perseverance and optimism of our Hononegah
students is really extraordinary; many students have had to overcome great adversity in order to achieve success. Be on the lookout for the scholarship recipients in next month’s newsletter.
Workplace Readiness Program Goals
1. To set standards of workplace readiness as recommended by business and industry.
2. To promote effort, honesty, cooperation, responsibility, initiative
and high quality of work within Hononegah Community High
School students.
3. To communicate to employers that Hononegah will work to prepare students with proper workplace skills and attitudes.
4. To issue a certification to students who have successfully satisfied
the program criteria.

SPRING WELLNESS TEAM CHALLENGE
Hononegah’s Health and Wellness team proudly presents its third annual Spring Wellness Team Challenge.
The challenge calls for participants to form teams, pick a t-shirt color and choose a team name. Teams then
encourage and/or heckle each other to be active and stay fit, tracking their steps and tabulating their miles.
Fitness, prizes, team pride—all are on the line as participants survive the stress of a busy school year and look
forward to feeling good for summer. Last year, we recruited 161 participants and logged 33,060.711 total
miles, which equates to around the world 1.37 times or 14% of the way to the moon. This year, we recruited
191 participants; let’s shoot for the moon!
