Club Information – New Knitting Group!
Knitting has become cool – celebrity knitters include Julia Roberts, Hilary Swank, Cameron
Diaz, Winona Ryder, Madonna, Daryl Hannah, Kate Moss, Uma Thurman – and Gladiator
star Russell Crowe!
The Verity Knitting Group is an ever expanding group of Verity Members who will meet
weekly to share conversation, ideas and skills over a glass of wine, or a cup of coffee …
while they knit! Knitting is enjoying renewed popularity. Busy women are discovering
that knitting provides important “me” time, a stress relieving way to connect with others,
and an outlet for creativity … and, not to mention, a sense of accomplishment, in the
midst of a chaotic and demanding life.
If you don’t know how to knit, come along anyway. Group members whould be happy to
share their technique and tips, their patterns and their support. From time to time, the
Verity Knitting Group will bring in experts from local wool shops to hold classes
(minimal additional charge). These subjects of these classes range from beginners’ skills
to detailed finishing and creative techniques. Many Group members have a variety of
needlework skills, all are welcome.

Author’s Night: “Getting to Maybe” by Frances Westley, Brenda Zimerman
and Michael Quinn Patton
Many of us have a deep desire to make the world around us a better place. But we tend to
think that great social change is the province of heroes - an intimidating view of reality that
keeps ordinary people on the couch. The trick in any great social project - from the global
fight against AIDS to working to eradicate poverty in a single Canadian city - is to stop
looking at the discrete elements and start trying to understand the complex relationships
between them. By studying fascinating real-life examples of social change through this
system-and-relationships lens, the authors of Getting to Maybe tease out the rules of
engagement between volunteers, leaders, organizations and circumstance - between
individuals and what Shakespere called "the tide in the affairs of men."
Getting to Maybe applies the insights of complexity theory and harvests the experiences of a
wide range of people and organizations - including the ministers behind the Boston Miracle;
the Grameen Bank, in which on man's dream of micro-credit sparked a financial revolution
for the world's poor; the efforts of a Canadian clothing designer to help transform the lives
of aboriginal women and children; and many more - to lay out a brand new way of thinking
about making change in communities, in business, and in the world.

Verity Members’ Book Club
Verity Member Susan Dawson will be leading the first Verity Members’ book Club
discussion.
Do you enjoy reading interesting, relevant and captivating books? Do you sometimes wish
you could share your views about a certain character or a pivotal event? Now you can, in the
comfort of Verity’s beautiful library with other women just as keen as you are!
Welcome to the launch of Verity’s own Book Club! Starting in March, we will begin our
journey with Irene Nemirovsky’s “exceptionally forceful and frank testimony” Suite
Francaise. This extraordinary novel of life under the Nazi occupation and the exodus from
Paris after the German invasion of 1940 has been hailed by European critics as a War and
Peace for the Second World War.
Written by the esteemed French novelist Irène Némirovsky, the book was conceived as a
five-part work, however she was only able to write the first two parts, before she was
arrested in July 1942. She died in Auschwitz the following month. Upon the arrest of her
husband, their young daughter Denise grabbed a small suitcase containing some family
photo’s, dairies, and a thick leather binder that had never left her mother’s side. “I didn’t
know what it was,” she said, “but I knew it was precious to mother.” These items followed
the daughters into hiding for the rest of the war. In the mid 1970’s, after decades of being
unable to bring herself to open it, Denise learned that what she thought was her mother’s
journal, was in fact, two completed novels. The process of transcribing took years, and it
was not until this past April, that Denise no longer believed that she would be betraying her
mother by publishing it.
