Welcome to Dana Point: “Harboring the Good Life”
It is with great pleasure and pride that we welcome you to join CSPD’s 40th
and WSPD’s 13th Annual Meeting in Dana Point. We are excited to once
again present a lineup of renowned speakers for our scientific sessions and
provide an atmosphere that carries you away from the busy city life.
Our program will be of interest to all; from the graduate resident students
and recent graduates to the seasoned veterans that can see the light at
the end of the tunnel. We have outstanding session topics on the latest
technology and materials as well as the business side of pediatric dentistry.
We have added courses for your auxiliary staff to help make your practices
run smoother. As you can see, our scientific program has something for
everyone.
Don’t forget to visit our wonderful sponsors and exhibitors in the exhibit
hall. After all, they do help make this meeting possible! See the latest and
greatest products they have to offer to make practicing pediatric dentistry
the joy that it is.
Enjoy beautiful Dana Point and our meeting headquarters, The Laguna
Cliffs Marriott. Relax at their full-service spa where you can enjoy massages,
body treatments and facials. For any down time you may find, enjoy one of
the two or both of the outdoor swimming pools or tennis courts that the
hotel has to offer.
Our welcome reception will provide a fantastic venue to catch up with old
friends that we all wish we could see more often and an opportunity to
make new friends that are the future of our organization and profession.
And get ready to fasten your seatbelts for a Gala celebrating CSPD’s 40th
anniversary. Who would have ever thought that from 1975 to now we would
be where we are. It will be a Gala to remember. Get ready for a look at the
past to the present and to dancing the night away with music through the
decades!
Once again, welcome to our Annual Meeting and we look forward to
celebrating 40 Years of Smiles with you!

CSPD Foundation Lecture
Sponsored by
A Practice and Business Model Allowing Access to Care
Presented by John Fehmer
John and his partner, the late Scott Jacks, have built a multioffice practice which accepts Denti-Cal patients and provides
comprehensive care in spite of the low reimbursement for
their services. How are they able to continue to see large
numbers of Medicaid patients and continue to deliver quality
care?
The Role of the Federally Qualified Health Centers as a
Partial Solution to the Access to Care Problem
Presented by Ariane Terlet
Meeting the Challenge & Innovative Solutions for Access to
As the Dental Director of an FQHC in California Dr. Terlet
Care
Presented by Jared Fine, DDS; Liz Snow; John Fehmer; Ariane has been at ground zero of the Access to Care problems for
children in California for many years now. She has been
Terlet, DDS; & Richard Mungo, DDS
involved in developing “Outside the Four Walls Contracts”
Time: 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
to provide specialty care to patients requiring services not
Location: Dana V - VIII
available in most FQHC facilities.
Audience: Scientific Session Dentists, Students & Residents,
Dental Auxiliaries and Dental Office Staff
CEUs: 4 Units
Course Topics:
Scope of the Problem
Presented by Jared Fine
Current statistics regarding the number of children in
California who are eligible for DentiCal services and the
numbers who have received care . Best estimate as to the
number of providers (General Dentists, Pediatric Dentists)
accepting DentiCal patients in their practices. He will discuss
the reasons behind the introduction of legislation which
supports the concept of Mid-level providers as a possible
solution to the access problem and how the pressure to adopt
this solution will not go away soon. He will also discuss the
effects of the Affordable Care Act on numbers of patients
covered by Medicaid in future years which will only add to the
need to find innovative solutions to the problem.
Managed Care vs. Fee for Service - What Works and What
Doesn’t
Presented by Liz Snow
Provider reimbursement levels seem to be a major barrier
to access to oral health care for the Denti-Cal population in
California. She will discuss the efforts that CDA has made to
find innovative solutions and to keep the dentist as the lead
entity in what ever solutions evolve. What are the prospects
for increases to the fee schedule in the foreseeable future?
What are some potential alternatives to the current system
which could expand the number of Pediatric Dentists willing
to see DentiCal children.

In 1950, Humphrey introduced the stainless steel crown to
dentistry as a method of restoring badly decayed primary
molar teeth. This has remained a mainstay of restorative
dentistry for pediatric dentists for over 60 years. However,
although the durability of stainless steel crowns continues
to be superior to almost every other pediatric restorative
option, many parents are requesting and demanding more
aesthetic restorations for their child’s teeth. This presentation
will discuss aesthetic full coverage options for badly decayed
primary teeth with an emphasis on pre-made zirconia
primary crowns, pre-veneered primary crowns, and full resin
based composite crowns. Indications and advantages and
disadvantages of each type of crown will be discussed as well
as tips on preparation, fitting and cementation. Information
from the recent AAPD Restorative Symposium will also be
included.
Learning Objectives:
• Discuss the handling characteristics, preparation, fitting
and cementation of zirconia primary crowns.
• Understand the clinical indications and selection criteria
for restoring primary teeth with resin bonded primary
crowns, preveneered crowns, and zirconia primary
crowns.
• Understand the clinical limitations to the three most

Employment Law: Wage and Hour
Rules and Pitfalls
Presented by Anita York, the Law Firm of Scott & Whitehead
Time: 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
At some point in your dental career, it is almost certain
that you will be an employer or, at the very least, a
supervisor. Both of these roles carry many legal and moral
responsibilities, which you don’t learn about in dental school.
“Employment Law Basics for California Dental Practices” is
an introductory program, and provides a general overview
of the key employment law issues for today’s dental practice.
Topics include independent contractors, the employment
relationship, wage and hour rules and landmines,
discrimination and wrongful termination, and leaves of
absence.
There will be a Q&A at the end for your employment-related
questions.

Superior marginal adaptation,
less tooth reduction.
Features delivering more
efficiencies to your bottom line:
Scientifically designed using digital and CBCT
scans of natural primary teeth, NuSmile ZR
Crowns have anatomical features that provide
close adaptation at the gingival margin. Crown

for excessive tooth reduction. Knife-edge
