Welcome to Bespoked Bristol - The UK Handmade Bicycle Show
A celebration of the handmade bicycle industry.
It’s a very exciting time for frame building at the moment. The depth of talent and level of enthusiasm is
quite astonishing. The craftsmanship on display here is amongst the best in the world.
For these people to carry on making these beautiful bikes they need to sell them, so if you like what you
see ask how much? This show provides you with the chance to meet many different designers and makers,
using different methods of production which enable prices to be more affordable.
Making a beautiful bicycle takes time. Time to learn the skills and longer to perfect them. You can build
your own bicycle under expert tuition and afterwards, proud of your work look at the masters’ then truly
appreciate the skill involved. Then you will look at the price and wonder how it can be achieved at twice
the amount.
Thank you to Kayti Peschke Photography Ltd - www.kaytipeschke.com for photographing all the exhibitor’s
work. Thank you to Odoni for providing cycle parking. And thank you to our sponsors for their support.
We hope that you enjoy the show.

13th Floor Distribution is a Veil. Behind it are two brands. The first is “TubalCain” and the
second is “Weyland.”
Taking it’s name from the Biblical Blacksmith of steel and brass Tubal Cain makes their rigid
only frames and forks in the UK. They are forged together by the Somerset Legend that is Brian
Curtis. R&D is done by Tim March and Steve Bancroft and these three are the independent
points of this project. Weyland is Tim March’s accessory company that makes handlebars. All
are Drawn, Painted, Brazed and Chromed in the UK.

14 Bike Co
Since we opened our doors in Spring 2009, we have built over 500 bikes for our very satisfied
customers. All our frames are hand-built in the UK using British steel. At 14 Bike Co, we don’t
simply put you on a bike – we build a bike for you. We start by measuring for the right size
frame. If we have the correct frame in stock, then we can move on to the next stage. If we
don’t, then we’ll build one especially.

Offering a unique view on bike design, Award Bikes look at things differently to create a ride
outside of the box. Using Adrian Ward’s previous design experience with Marin, Whyte and
Nukeproof, Award Bikes combine design innovation with function, quality and materials.
The latest - the 29er - demonstrates one of the shortest chainstays to produce a nimble short
wheelbase bike with clearance for 2.5 plus tyres . The beauty of it is that Adrian maintains all
the practical design aspects with the overall look to produce a frame with flowing, graceful
curves from front to back.

Make a bike with a difference.
Learn how to make bikes, keep the skills and give your first bike to someone who really needs
it. We give people the lessons, skills and kit to design and make their own bikes. But there’s a
big difference. Each student at The Bicycle Academy will make a bike designed especially to
use in Africa. Students keep the skills they learn and their first bike will go to someone who
really needs it. Once they’ve made their frame for Africa, graduates can come back to our
workshop to hone their skills and build their own frames

bike science
Bike Science was established in March 2010 by Andy Sexton. Andy has over twenty five years
of competitive biking experience and over twenty years as a triathlete. While working at
Planet X he identified the need to be able to offer accurate, professional bike fitting services
to riders wishing to buy bikes without being able to try the actual bike for size first and riders
wishing to optimise their riding position to increase performance, avoid injury or improve
comfort. He started Bike Science with these aims in mind.

Boocycles
Having a passion for using natural materials, working as a bicycle mechanic and a love of
cycling, has led me to making Boocycles. Bamboo bikes are becoming increasingly popular.
The others that I have seen are only frames partially consisting of bamboo. Therefore each
time I begin making I set out to make more of the bike from bamboo than previously. In
addition I am not just making the bikes for show, but comparable to other, far more tried and
tested materials, in an effort to make the most environmentally friendly mode of transport.

The story of the most famous steel tubes in the history of cycling began in 1919 when A.L.
Colombo founded his steel plant with the ambition to “to do business in iron and steel and
make a fair and honest profit,”. The result was the history of cycling as we know it: legendary
tube sets AIR, MAX, SL, SLX, NIVACROM, Altec, Starship and Spirit right up to the most 2009’s
XCR, the world’s first ever tubeless stainless steel tube set which allows for the production
of a steel frame competitive (and out-performing in some categories) at the highest level
of the sport on all levels: weight (sub-1400g), rigidity, fatigue resistance and of course the
remarkably superior handling of steel.

If you’re considering titanium as a material for your custom-made bicycle frame you are
probably already aware of it’s near mystical qualities: ultra-light, responsive, low maintenance,
resistance to corrosion, superlative ride quality. It almost sounds too good to be true, right?
Not so. The way the big bike manufactures pump out the “stock” frame leaves little left to the
craft of custom frame building. Crisp Titanium does ONLY bicycle frames made-to-order for
the 5-6% of cyclists who realize the value of a custom handcrafted frame.

Run by Gary Woodhouse and Brian Curtis, and they spend most of their time here. Everything
is done here in house- the tubing cut, mitred and shaped. The frame jigged and tacked before
Brian brazes the frame together into its final shape. Extras like brake mounts, cable stops and
gussets are then added. The only thing not done in house is the powdercoating. Frames are
mass produced by Gary and Brian at the rate of 1 a week. 2012 is our 40th anniversary of Curtis

It all began with a desire to have a tall bike. Since then I’ve been delving into the art of frame
building. I build traditional style frames, tall bikes, trailers and advertising bikes.
Recently I’ve been making retro steel CRMO stems and bars. It’s great getting your hands dirty
and making stuff.

Bikes say a lot about yourself. Why then should a frame not be every bit as unique as the
human being riding it? That’s why I love and build custom frames. I don’t do production runs.
I build bespoke bikes, one by one, starting with design and the geometry to fit you like a
glove, continuing with a hacksaw, a file, a TIG welder, a pipe bender and finishing everything
off with an extensive manual finish and a bolt on headbadge. If I had a say everybody would
ride a custom bike.

joint type, braze-ons and frame colour. The frame will be the end result of a consultation process often
involving a frame fitting. Not all framebuilders have spraying facilities in house. These frames do not
exist before being commissioned. Expect to pay upwards of £1000 for a custom made frame.

Introduction
The aim of this directory is to be the comprehensive reference point for people wanting to find out about
handmade bicycles and those who make them. The section of the directory we have included here is
Custom UK Frame Builders. Please visit our website www.thmbd.com to view the full list of categories
and builders in other countries.
When people talk of a handmade or custom bicycle they are more than likely referring to having the
frame made for them, painted to their specification and then choosing the components to best suit that
style of the frame. These frames will not exist until its commission.
We hope to have included all the UK frame builders in these pages. Please email phil@thmbd.com to let
us know of any omissions and we will update our online directory.
*Please note - inclusion in this directory is not an assurance of quality*
Many of the well known mass produced bicycles are handmade but are done so using production line
techniques. So to help clarify the term ‘handmade’ we have come up with some further classification: -
Custom Built – In House (excluding painting)
Every aspect of the frame is selected to suit the rider (and their budget), tubing/material, frame angles,
joint type, braze-ons and frame colour. The frame will be the end result of a consultation process often
involving a frame fitting. Not all framebuilders have spraying facilities in-house. These frames do not
exist before being commissioned.
Expect to pay upwards of £1000 for a custom made frame.
Custom Built – Manufacture Outsourced
Almost identical to the above apart from the manufacture of the frame is outsourced. This is more common with titanium and carbon frames due to the more complex manufacture process. It would not be
uncommon for a frame builder to produce their steel frames in house but outsource other materials.
Again, these frames do not exist before being commissioned.
Expect to pay upwards of £1000 for a custom made frame.
Off The Peg/Boutique Frames and Bicycles (small scale batch production)
To view this catogory visit www.thmbd.com
A frame designer designs the frame, choosing the tubing/materials, angles etc. The frames are then
made to these requirements often in a range of sizes.
These bicycles are sold as frame only or with a selection of build options as the designer will have given
consideration to what will suit the style of frame. These frames exist before commission.
Expect to pay upwards of £300 for a frame depending upon materials, complete bicycles often cost
around £1000 but this depends greatly on the components.
Manufacture can be in house or outsourced this will be stated in the listing.
Within this category are some larger producers who make a range of bicycles of which only some meet
the ‘boutique’ label.
Vintage Frames and Bicycles - To view this catogory visit www.thmbd.com
Previously used frames that have been renovated, often to your requirements. These frames could be
any of the above and are often sold as complete bicycles with boutique components

Trevor Jarvis Cycles
Makers of high quality hand built lightweight frames including the ‘Flying Gate’ design
which is 75 years old this year. For some time now it has been known of my pending
retirement. At the tender age as the age of 80 gets nearer it is time to start considering the
possibility that you don’t go on forever. A young engineer, Jeremy Cartwright, has joined
the company to learn the skills of the trade to continue building T. J. Cycle’s frames and
to take the company forward. Jeremy has had full mechanical engineering training and is
skilled in most aspects of it, which will be of great value in the building of the frames to the
high quality that has been the hall mark of the company.
