The San Diego Chapter of CPSA has been a rich source of information, techniques, colleagues, encouragement and inspiration. As a detail-oriented person, I find colored pencil a very satisfying medium with its rich pallet and the translucent variations possible through layering. I enjoy using colored pencil on paper, but also on polyester film and tile. It has been an honor to be recognized through awards in our Chapter shows, the Small Image Show and the San Diego County Fair.” Try Colored Pencil on Polyester Film Our June meeting will feature drawing on plastic! Katherine Miller will share her techniques for working on polyester film. Each participant will work on a small sheet of Dura-Lar polyester film (matte finish on both sides; .005, or 5 mils thick). Plan for a 4” x 5” image on your sheet, so you have room to record and test colors in the margins. Katherine will provide a simple image to experiment on. You can bring your own image or “wing it”. We will lightly trace the image through the film. Your finished image will be a mirror image of your initial image. We will use both sides of the film to develop a sense of depth. We can apply layers and textures and remove color. I prefer Prismacolor (or other soft wax-based) pencils when using polyester film. Please bring what pencils you have and project supplies. We will have ample supplies to share. Be ready to explore. In saying this, you need to think about the daily trove of visitors, getting to know exactly what we are able to achieve, with the “The Colored Pencil”. Since the CPSA was formed, we CP artists, have gone from having maybe five (5) reliable sources of artist’s quality products to work with to . . . do we know the exact number of high quality, light-fast pencils we have to select from? As I pointed out at a recent meeting, citing from the Drawing magazine, Winter 2015 issue, highlighting Colored Pencil, in the article “Colored Pencil Primer”, by Sherry Camhy she writes: “Perhaps no other drawing medium has seen its stock rise so dramatically in recent years as colored pencil.” How about our selection of work surfaces? If you’ve been to our “Show & Tell” sessions, you are already aware of papers (traditional papers – with many new specifically for CP), boards (gessoed), cradle boards, sanded papers, suede papers, archival vellums (Dura-Lar), wood, tile, seashells, and marble. We all want a successful show in October :) 3 Balboa Park: A Millennium History FROM THE HEART Author: Roger M. Showley This lovely, large format picture book of the park's history, contains wonderful old photos from the San Diego Historical Society archives. It starts with the people who developed the early ideas for a park. Then it goes into the first exposition in 1915-16. There were many model farms that were part of the fair and great shots of San Diego streets with old cars. During the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935, Spanish Village was built to be part of a "Villages of the World" complex, but only the Spanish section was completed. After the fair, it opened as "Spanish Village Art Center." It was occupied during World War II by the army, artists came back in 1947. Did you know that the second Exposition included a nudist colony? It was located in Zoro Garden, between the Fleet Science Center and Casa de Balboa. Pretty surprising! I found it fascinating, with lots of revelations about our park that I had no idea about! The book may help me in my personal quest regarding subjects for our "Color in the Park: Balboa Park - Past, Present and Future" show. Happy Exploring, Katherine Miller I have found that whenever I take on a project that I am doing as a requirement or a commission, it is usually not from my heart. Sometimes I am able to connect with the project, but rarely am I able to lose myself in the project. This bonding between me and my project is of the utmost importance to me. Working from my heart entails looking at many photos and simply seeing which one gets my artistic juices flowing in the moment. I look and I look. Finally something stirs me. Creativity starts, and I think and plan how to move forward. I look at the selected photo over and over again. I take it from room to room. I continue to look. I notice new elements with each gaze. Moving forward I decide on surface and project size. Getting my image on the surface or paper is next. And now...whew, that first colored pencil stroke is the absolute most difficult...and we're off. It is usually difficult at first, but the more I persevere the project begins to teach me what to do. Now I am soaring. I become one with my project. As it evolves, there is a point at which it has taken over my life. Yes, this is absolute true art expression for me. It is blissful, invigorating and exciting all at the same time. This experience is truly coming from my heart and my soul. To me, these are my most successful works. Yes, we are continuing our tradition, of displaying our project at the CPSA 2015 Convention Hospitality Suite in the Hilton Doubletree Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. For our project we want to highlight images of our beautiful city and county of San Diego. We have Stonehenge paper available at meetings.
