STAND UP to Bullying Maryland FAQs
Who Should Attend?
All students in grades 6-12 are invited to attend STAND UP to Bullying Maryland as a member of a
school or organization. Schools may send groups of students (one adult/teacher for every 10 students
is recommended). Teams should reflect diversity in gender, ethnicity, race, religion, interest, etc.
What Are the Program Highlights?
Student “Town-Hall Meeting”
The program includes an “on-stage” discussion on the issue of bullying featuring a diverse group of
students all impacted by some aspect of bullying. The student audience participates in the discussion
by asking questions from microphone positions on the floor of the arena and also by texting in responses to an interactive survey conducted from the stage. The student discussion is facilitated by bullying
experts, Dr. Elizabeth Englander and Meghan McCoy, and their team of talented and experienced graduate students from the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University
(MARC).
Inspirational Speeches
Throughout the day students and teachers will hear from inspirational speakers. We are planning on
having several outstanding presenters: 1) Lizzie Velásquez, who has spoken at several STAND UPs to
much fanfare 2) Brooks Gibbs 3) Tray Chaney and 4) Christine McComas. Lizzie Velásquez is a young
woman whose extremely rare medical condition has led her to become an author and motivational
speaker. Her TEDx talk is particularly moving. Brooks is a motivational speaker and author and a leading authority on bullying. Based in Tennessee, he has presented at over 1,000 school assemblies and
internationally has reached more than 3 million people. He is also the best-selling author of the book
Love is Greater Than Hate. Tray Chaney is an actor, author and rapper known for his role on the show
“The Wire.” Christine McComas is the mother of Grace McComas, a Maryland teen who committed
suicide in 2012 after being bullied. Christine worked hard to get “Grace’s Law” passed and has been an
anti-bullying advocate since.
Exhibition Area of Innovative Programs
An area within the arena will be established for schools and students to showcase their programs
and initiatives that deal with bullying. Schools from throughout Maryland with unique and successful
programs will set up exhibits designed to showcase and share their programs with the interested students and teachers in attendance. Also, within this area, students are presented with the opportunity
to record a video testimonial against bullying, have their photo taken, sign an anti-bullying petition and
create their own anti-bullying campaign button.
STAND UP Awards
Three (3) special recognition awards will be presented for innovative programs developed by schools/
students dealing with bullying. The STAND UP Awards will be presented to the winning students/schools
by local celebrities.
