Fitness Center to operate under Holiday Hours May 22-25 Ellicott Elementary School students will now have a place to let other children know they need a friend thanks to Schriever resident and Ellicott Elementary fourth grader Natalie Moore. That’s because Moore, 9, donated a pair of Buddy Benches to the school during a ceremony there May 11. “If you’re feeling lonely or your friends aren’t at school that day you can go sit on the bench and somebody will come over and invite you to their game,” Moore said. “And if you see someone on the bench, no matter what, you’re supposed to go over and invite them to play.” Moore created the benches as the final piece to earning her Girl Scouts Bronze Award. In order to earn the Bronze Award, Girl Scout Juniors must complete a Journey, create something reusable and make a positive, lasting change for their community. Typically, the Journey and project would be completed by a group of Girl Scout Juniors, but Natalie’s situation was unique in that she did almost everything by herself. “Most troops have a group of girls who brainstorm, plan and execute these projects together,” said Bonnie Moore, Natalie’s mother. “She did this by herself. Usually you might have 12 to 15 girls working on a project and Nat did it solo because she didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get her Bronze Award.” A Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve, according to girlscouts.org. Bonnie said this project also had a personal meaning for Natalie. “She doesn’t have very many friends at See Donate page 4 U.S. Air Force photo/Brian Hagberg Natalie Moore (right), a Schriever housing resident and fourth grade student at Ellicott Elementary School, unveils the Buddy Benches she created and donated to the school as part of a community service project to earn her Girl Scouts Bronze Award Monday at Ellicott, Colo. Holman’s success in 2014, including a fourth place finish in the 800 Long Course Meters freestyle at the FINA Worlds event in Montreal and breaking Colorado Masters Swimming Association records in both the 200 LCM backstroke and 800 LCM freestyle, helped earn her the 2014 Air Force Athlete of the Year award. By Brian Hagberg 50th Space Wing Public Affairs First Lt. Sara Holman has received many accolades during her swimming career. She earned NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Week honors during her junior year of college, took fourth place in the 800 meter freestyle event at the FINA World Masters Championships in Montreal last August and is currently ranked third in the nation in five events by U.S. Masters Swimming. Now, she can add 2014 Air Force Athlete of the Year to that list. “I wasn’t expecting [to win the award], but it was awesome,” Holman said. “It’s great; I never thought I would receive an Air Forcelevel award.” Capt. Eric Miller, 2nd Space Operations Squadron, said the squadron is proud of Holman for earning the Athlete of the Year, and that it serves as motivation for the rest of the squadron. “The squadron is extremely proud of Sara’s accomplishments,” he said. “We already knew she was an awesome analyst, but the fact that she beat out other world class athletes for such a competitive award is exciting See Athlete page 11 2 Schriever Sentinel May 14, 2015 Lunch, Learn offers new perspective By Senior Airman Naomi Griego 50th Space Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force photo/ Christopher DeWitt Sarah Bender, Sensei resident teacher, Springs Mountain Sangha (Zen Buddhist Practice Community), speaks during the Schriever Lunch and Learn in the Dish Dining Facility April 29, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colo. The 50th Space Wing Chaplain’s office is offering information about world religions at their Lunch and Learn events 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesdays through June 3, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado. Each session highlights a different world religion and a guest speaker from the local community. The April 29 Lunch and Learn focused on Buddhism, the May 6 event was about Judaism, May 13 features Christianity, May 20 will look at Earth Based religion, Islam is tentatively scheduled for May 27, and Hinduism, June 3. Chaplain (Major) Martin Adamson, 50 SW, brought the idea of the Lunch and Learn here from his last assignment in hope of spreading knowledge. “It’s an educational opportunity for people to learn about religions they may not have otherwise known about,” said Adamson. “It’s an hour for people to get a little bit more than they would have otherwise.” Speakers for the Lunch and Learn are from the local Colorado Springs community. They offer insight into their respective religions and answer questions. “Being in the military, we travel all around the world and encounter different faiths,” he said. “This information can help us interact with different cultures in the future. It’s not meant to push any particular faith or religion on anyone.” Staff Sgt. Marcela Parker, 50 SW NCO-in charge Chapel operations, said the Lunch and Learn has received a growing ammount of attention and attendance. “It’s for people to go and discuss new religions and for people who don’t know about that specific religion to ask questions,” she said. “We just want people to know that we’re here for them. And if you have questions, just ask.” Parker and Adamson said the program is a good overall way for people to interact, fellowship and just network with others they may not have known. “It’s good to be exposed,” said Adamson. “We might learn something.” The chapel staff credited the success of the Lunch and Learn to Chaplain (1st Lt.) Jennifer Ray who helped coordinate the event. They said they are happy to support all Airmen regardless of their faith. “The goal is education,” said Adamson. “An educated Airmen is a better Airmen.” Criminal Defense LAW FIRM OF MARK S. While I had a general idea of the 50 SW’s mission, I had never been assigned here in any capacity so my understanding of satellite command and control was very limited. In fact, I had no idea what the Air Force Satellite Control Network was much less what its acronym represented. So you can imagine my surprise when in October 2011, it was announced that I would be assigned to Schriever Air Force Base. Arriving in June 2012, it didn’t take me long to realize how special this Wing is and how critical our operations are to not only the U.S. Armed Forces but every aspect of our Nation. When former 2nd Space Operations Squadron commander, Lt. Col. Thomas Ste. Marie coined the term “Humanity” to describe GPS operations, I initially thought it was cliché-ish. However, I have come to think that his one word description could be used to describe the global impact not just of GPS but provided by each and every squadron in this wing. For that reason, I further believe that “Master of Space” is not just a wing motto, it is the truth. Serving with each of you for these past three years has been truly amazing. Watching what this wing has accomplished ... from overcoming severe budget restraints, to mission impacting satellite anomalies, to preparing for two massive AFSPC IG inspections, to overcoming severe cyber challenges, has been eye opening and humbling. Each of you have met the challenges head-on and have never waivered in your professionalism and dedication to the mission. There is a reason why we continue to win the Air Force Space Command’s Gen. Robert T. Herres award and Omaha Trophy: You are truly the best our nation has to offer. Since 2001, our nation has been in a constant state of conflict and while our involvement in Iraq has ended and we are drawing down in Afghanistan, that doesn’t mean we have won the war. There will always be individuals, groups and even nation-states who wish the United States ill and the capabilities we provide to our warfighting brethren will become even more important. Normally, I try and use my commentaries as an opportunity to spurn discussion and thought. However, I wanted to use this one to merely say thank you. So far, I have served in our Air Force for 21 years and I have never had an assignment that has been as meaningful and professionally rewarding as my assignment to the 50th Space Wing. It has been a pleasure serving with each of you and I will forever cherish the many friendships I have made. I decided a long time ago that I was “all in” and would go wherever the Air Force needed me. However, when it was announced that I would be assigned to Schriever, I must confess that I did question that decision. Three years later with assignments in both the 50th Operations Support Squadron and the 50th Network Operations Group, I can honestly say that being assigned to the 50th Space Wing has been one of the greatest blessings of my career! Every assignment is different but what makes an assignment are the people with whom you serve. Whether military, civilian or contractor, we are truly a seamless team which has made serving with each of you a true honor. 4 Schriever Sentinel May 14, 2015 Donate From page 1 school, so this [project] started personally,” Bonnie said. “We were looking for a way to be the change, and everything fell in line. She’s hoping that other kids like her, that need a little help, walk away [from the bench] with someone to talk to.” Robin Weidemueller, Ellicott School District director of gifted and talented, said gifted students, like Natalie, often have trouble making friends because other kids view them differently. “It is sometimes hard [for them to make friends], so it was really neat that Natalie could see that in herself,” Weidemueller said. “That was something she had to work on to make it happen, and then she found a way to share it with her peers. I think that was an insightful thing for a fourth grader to be able to do.” While researching the Buddy Bench project, Natalie discovered this idea is rapidly becoming a national movement among youth in America. Buddybench.org tells the story of Christian Bucks, an elementary student at Roundtown Elementary School in York, Pennsylvania. Bucks saw a Buddy Bench at a school in Germany while researching for a potential family move, and decided to try to get a bench for his school. The bench was so popular that soon every school in the district had one, and the project began to spread to other areas. Bucks’ story became so widespread he was featured on the Today Show Dec. 4, 2014, and Buddy Benches are now at schools across the country. “It’s a movement now,” Bonnie said. “Since we started doing research, we’ve noticed how widespread it’s become.” Bonnie said it was approximately two months from the day they pitched the idea to Ellicott Elementary Principal Joe Torrez until the dedication ceremony. During that time, Natalie raised money, purchased materials to create the benches, painted the benches and weather sealed them, all of this with only minimal assistance from her friends and parents. In order to raise enough money to purchase the benches and all the materials to finish them, Natalie created a tri-fold board explaining her project and put it in the school hallway with a donation can so other students could contribute. She also held a yard sale at her home on base which helped her raise $150 for the project. “She had a lot of support from people on base,” Bonnie said. CSMNG_SurpriseAd_Willie_DISK.indd 1 U.S. Air Force photo/Brian Hagberg Natalie Moore (seated, left), a fourth grade student at Ellicott Elementary School and Schriever resident, sits on one of the Buddy Benches she donated to the school Monday at Ellicott, Colo., with Ellicott Elementary Principal Joe Torrez and members of her Girl Scout troop. Moore created the benches as her project to promote positive, lasting change to her community and earn her Girl Scout Bronze Award. Completing the project wasn’t without incident. There were several obstacles and setbacks along the way. Bonnie said they spent a significant amount of time researching exactly which kinds of wood and paint would work best for the project, then once Natalie settled on a bench, it wasn’t available. “When she picked the bench she really wanted, it wasn’t available when they went to buy it,” Weidemueller said. “So she had to redo her whole thinking.” Natalie said the family cat left his personal signature on the bench as well. “He stepped all over the orange paint and got it all over the arms,” she said. The area’s severe weather recently nearly left Natalie stranded in the mountains and a produced small pond in the school playground. Fortunately, the school yard was dry for the ceremony. “Natalie was with the Girl Scouts camping and she was snowed in on the mountain,” Bonnie said. “We had a few hiccups, but it was mostly smooth sailing.” With the completion of the project, Natalie has earned her Bronze Award, though she won’t receive the patch until her troop’s end of year party. What she really wants to see though, is people taking advantage of the Buddy Benches at school. “I would like to see somebody walking away from the bench with somebody talking with them,” she said. “I’m not saying I want to see people on the bench, but you want to see people walking away from the bench with someone to play with.” 4/22/15 4:27 PM Schriever Sentinel May 14, 2015 Chief’s Corner Invest, empower, inspire By Chief Master Sgt. John F. Bentivegna 50th Space Wing Command Chief These are the leadership themes I spoke about during last week’s Airmen Leadership School graduation and I wanted to share them here. Invest Most people think of money when you say that word...profits and financial gains. But I’m talking about a far more valuable resource...our Airmen (with a big A). As supervisors, leaders and mentors I need you to invest in our Airmen and the currency you’re going to use is your time. Give Airmen your time and attention. Get to know them, their goals, strengths and weaknesses, what drives them and how you can motivate them. The investments you make can be long-term or short-term. Long-term investments are with the people you supervise, work with and see regularly for a few years. Short-term investments can be as simple as an Airman you attend ALS with or maybe run across at the mili- History Quiz Week of May 14, 2015 tary personnel customer service center. Throughout my career, I have experienced and benefited from both Airmen who have become lifelong friends and Airmen whose names I can’t even remember, who have all invested in my success and growth. These interactions have been critical in allowing me to serve until this day. Empower As supervisors and NCOs in charge you need to empower your Airmen and allow them to grow. Present them with new challenges and opportunities, give them ownership of tasks, projects and programs. If you have invested in them, you will know their strengths, capabilities and potential. There is an old Native American proverb that says, “Tell me and I’ll forget, show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I’ll understand.” The lessons learned through empowerment help Airmen learn how to make decisions, accept responsibility and develop innovative solutions. Inspire Napoleon Bonaparte said, “A leader is a dealer in hope”. Do you inspire the Airmen around you? Do you come to work every day motivated and ready to make a difference? I challenge you to be the positive influence in your work center. Understand what you do, how it contributes to the mission of your organization and ultimately to our national defense. Share what you know, the lessons you’ve learned and the successes you’ve had. Your influence is not limited by any rank, position or duty title. You have the ability to inspire your subordinates, your peers and your leadership. The U.S. Air Force needs you to be innovative leaders. Invest in the Airmen around you because you never know what return you may receive on even a small investment. Empower your people because you need to grow and develop your replacement and our future leaders. Inspire those around you, come to work every day and show by your actions that our Air Force is not just a job to you, it’s a way of life. Last week’s answer: The wing remained in France for several years. Which of the flying squadrons was the first to return to Hahn and when did that unit arrive? Bonus: What was their primary mission aircraft when they returned to Hahn? The 10th TFS was the first to return to Hahn Air Base December 10, 1959. The squadron returned with its newest aircraft, the F 100 Supersabre. This week’s question: May 8, 2015 marked the 70th anniversary of the allied victory in Europe. She said some of her teammates encouraged her to give competitive swimming a try and she eventually found she enjoyed it more than synchronized swimming. “A lot of people on [the synchronized] team became good friends of mine and they were competitive [swimmers], so I tried it out,” Holman said. “When I got to college I just did competitive and dropped synchronized swimming.” Holman swam during all four of her undergraduate years at the University of South Dakota. If your example is excellence, which in her case it is, that’s a huge piece of the leadership puzzle.” Miller said he’s already seen Holman’s dedication to excellence translated to her Air Force career, as her performance as a payload system operator for GPS earned her a spot in the analyst certification program. “She was selected to undergo our rigorous analyst certification program, which can take as long as six months,” Miller said. “She completed it in half that time and is now an analyst-on-call, basically the first line of defense when the crew detects an anomaly with the system. This is a huge deal.” Holman said it’s hard some days to get her swimming in, but it’s worth it to her to put in the extra time. She added she would put the time in even if she wasn’t a competitive swimmer because she loves the sport so much. “I swim for fun and if I do well, that’s great,” she said. “But I would be swimming anyway and I’ll probably do it for the rest of my life just because I love it so much.” Join Rocky Mountain PBS for a panel discussion and preview of the documentary, The Homefront. This event will be held at the Pikes Peak Community College Centennial Campus. The Homefront, features a cross-section of America’s military community. Representing many ranks, and drawn from across the country, these service members and their families illustrate what it means to serve. Ashley Conner Pacific Air Forces Public Affairs KATHMANDU, Nepal — When Senior Airman Manoj Khatiwada was asked to join a team of Pacific Air Force Airmen traveling to Nepal to assist the government with relief operations following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, he was filled with mixed emotions. “Returning to Nepal for this mission was an emotional moment for me. I didn’t know how I would react seeing the city where I was born and raised destroyed,” said Khatiwada, a 21st Medical Operations Squadron aerospace medical technician. “Thousands of Nepalese died and thousands are injured. I am happy that I am here, but I am sad to see this happen to Nepal.” Khatiwada was born and raised in Nepal and came to the United States in 2009 after winning permanent residency through the DV lottery program. Each year, the U.S. government makes 50,000 permanent residence visas available through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. The DV program was designed to bring greater racial and ethnic diversity to the United States. It offers 50,000 permanent residency visas to citizens of nations that have traditionally low levels of immigration to the United States. “Since childhood, I have had the desire to be in uniform and serve in the military,” he said. “I was fortunate to join the world’s greatest military and serve the men and women who welcomed me with open arms.” Since arriving in Nepal, Khatiwada has played a critical link between the Nepalese and the 36th Contingency Response Group in their effort to assist the Nepalese with accelerating airfield operations and increase the capacity to bring in aid via airlift, and ultimately distribute aid faster to those affected by this disaster. “Having Senior Airman Khatiwada embedded with our team has helped us better communicate how we can assist the people of Nepal in the relief efforts,” said Lt. Col. Glenn Rinehart, 36th Mobility Response Squadron commander. “He understands their interests and helps ensure effective communication so we can work together better. What would have normally taken days to orchestrate, he has been able to communicate and coordinate within hours.” Khatiwada said his most rewarding part of his job was being able to work with the two countries he loves the most. “The United States has always been generous and supportive to Nepal and the Nepalese. I am very thankful that the U.S. military is able to assist USAID and the Nepal government in the relief operations,” he said. “This support means a lot to the country.” U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
