Get Together: Work Together - The Veterans Support Conference for Cumbria
Thursday 21 May
9.30am – 3.30pm Rheged, Penrith CA11 ODQ
Cost: £20 per person
Veterans who need help deserve joined-up support. The Armed Forces Covenant
places a responsibility on all providers of support to ensure that the veteran and
serving community receive no disadvantage as a result of their service.
Last year a reinvigorated Armed Forces Community Covenant Forum for Cumbria
identified the need to ensure that the many agencies involved understand and work
with each other better to make the most of the resources available. So on behalf of
the Forum, the Royal British Legion working in partnership with Cumbria CVS, is
holding the Get Together : Work Together conference in Penrith in May.
The day will include a number of key speakers and will focus on the core themes of
Housing, Health and Wellbeing and Into Employment. With opportunities to network
and discuss the issues throughout the day, this conference provides an excellent
opportunity for those in Cumbria to get together to forge closer practical links,
to encourage joint working, share best practice, increase knowledge and
understanding and build effective partnerships.

Disclosure and Barring Update Service
Free for Volunteers
Are you aware that you can subscribe to keep your disclosure certificate up to date?
The Update Service was introduced in 2013 to enable applicants keep their DBS
certificates up to date online and allow employers to check a certificate online. There
is no need to re-apply if you need multiple checks within the same workforce where
the same level and type of check is required.
You can join when you apply for your DBS check or, if you wait until you’ve received
your certificate you’ll have 19 calendar days from the date it was issued. The service
is currently only available online. If you need any help with this ask the organisation
you are volunteering for to assist.
How to Register
• Note your application form number (found in the top right hand corner of the
form)
• Use the application form number to join the Update Service at
www.gov.uk/dbs-update-service
• When you register you will get an ID number with your registration. You will
need this to log onto the service so make a note and keep it safe.
What you get
When you join you’ll get an online account that allows you to:
• Take a certificate from one volunteering role to the next
• Give organisations permission to check your certificate online, and see who
has checked it
• Add or remove a certificate
A detailed guidance for applicants is available at
https://www.gov.uk/goverment/publications/dbs-update-service-applicant-guide
This is a free service for volunteers.

Grants from the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust
There have been a few changes at the Frieda Scott Trust that we thought local
charities should know about. We still offer grants to local voluntary/charitable
organisations in South Lakeland (and the former Westmorland area) with particular
concern for those who are working with the most disadvantaged and vulnerable in
our society, but here’s what’s new:
• they’re not just small grants … Trustees will now consider requests of up
to £20,000 per year
• even larger grants will occasionally be made for projects that make a big
difference to disadvantaged groups
• multi-year applications will also be considered where there is an ongoing
or longer-term need
• as before, Trustees will consider requests for either capital (e.g.
equipment) or revenue (e.g. salaries)
• our meetings are every 3 months so you never have long to wait for a
decision
• individual groups (e.g. scouts & guides) are welcome to apply rather than
going through their regional body, including local amateur sporting clubs.
The Application Form can be downloaded from our website (www.friedascott.org.uk)
and we always encourage anyone who is interested to contact us before applying so
that we can help with advice.
Call the Trust Secretary, Naomi Brown on 01539 742608.
Job Vacancy
Administration Coordinator
Organisation: Growing Well
Salary Details: £21-£24,000
Closing date for applications: 29 Apr 2015
Our Administration Co-ordinator is fundamental to the smooth operation of Growing
Well, and leads on supervising office based volunteers, to develop administrative
and financial skills and build confidence, supporting mental health recovery. You’ll be
working in a close and supportive team, and will be line-managed by the
Organisational Co-ordinator.
We’re looking for someone who has brilliant organisational ability, knowledge of
financial systems (Sage Line 50 preferably, though training can be given) but also
the skills needed to support individuals who may be experiencing anxiety and
depression, or other mental health conditions.
You do not have to have a background in mental health support work, but we do
expect you to fully embrace our mission of breaking down stigma about mental
10
health problems, and our focus on supporting recovery, giving people the skills and
confidence they need to achieve their goals and move forwards.
We are looking for someone with patience, the ability to communicate clearly, and
who can share their knowledge and experience with others in a supportive, learning
environment. The culture of Growing Well is very important to us. We are a
participative environment, and our volunteers are encouraged to get involved in all
aspects of the business. Sometimes this means that tasks are done more slowly, but
it is this aspect of being a ‘social firm’ that makes us what we are.
Volunteers value Growing Well for:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
“Unconditional acceptance (love) when I got it wrong”
“valuing my contribution”
“Community environment, camaraderie, strong leadership”
“Getting into a healthy routine, something to get out of bed for and get active”
“I feel I have found myself again, I feel I am a valued person, part of
team/community”
“Forget about the self, meeting other people that have had other things
happen in their lives. Fantastic staff – all have such sunny dispositions,
positive attitudes”
“GW has given me something to work towards. Something to occupy myself
during a particularly hard period”
“I’m not alone with what I suffer from – meeting new people with similar
problems has helped”
The post is 22.5 hours per week.
If you think that you have the skills we need, please contact
Clairelouise@growingwell.co.uk for an application pack and return either by post or
email by 5pm on Wednesday 29 April. You are welcome to ring us for a chat if you
have any questions about the role.
