A Tim O’Kane oil painting, “Study: Satsumi Orange” (unframed, 9 ¼ x 7 inches). One of the area’s premier artists, Tim studied at VCU and has trained himself in traditional painting methods, mixing his paints from powdered pigments. “I began painting the still-life twenty-five years into my career. That very first time I went for the minimalist approach, and I have stayed with it ever since. In creating compositional designs with the objects and light, I discovered a compelling balance between the geometric abstraction and the realistic illusion.” Tim has exhibited widely. Nancy is a mixed-media artist who works primarily with recycled materials, mainly reclaimed paper collected over many years. “From afar her pieces have a flat, muted look, but on close inspection they a rich textural surface is revealed. She considers herself a painter of landscapes and cityscapes. The images — at once both familiar and unpredictable — do not represent specific places, but are her response to them.” Value: $400. 33. A Frank Walker portrait in graphite, chalk, and/or charcoal. “Working largely from photographs, Walker’s practice of eliminating his sitter’s surroundings while highlighting particular aspects of their visage” captures much more than the physical person. Walker grew up on Vinegar Hill and began drawing when he was five years old. He received his BFA from VCU in painting and printmaking and recently retired from the UVA Hospital, where he worked as a medical illustrator. He is a Vietnam veteran, and past themes have included veterans of U.S. wars and scenes of slavery. He now specializes in portraiture. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, most recently in 2012 at the McGuffey Art Center, and is in numerous private collections.
