July 6 – 17, 2015 Dona Ana Community College - East Mesa Campus PROGRAM OVERVIEW and HIGHLIGHTS Welcome to the Architecture Discovery Camp 2015 at Dona Ana Community College of New Mexico State University For more information, contact the DACC Architecture program at (575) 527-7747 luirios@nmsu.edu (575) 528-7310 marhernandez@dacc.nmsu.edu PROGRAM OVERVIEW This two-week program is designed for Mid and High School students interested in learning about architecture and related fields. Students will gain hands-on experience in architectural design, drawing, software, model building, presentations, and team building. Students will also learn about famous architects, architectural styles & history and sustainable design. Presenters will include DACC and Texas Tech University Professors, DACC President Renay Scott, Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima, Local Architects, Engineers & Developers, experts in the areas of sustainable design, and student volunteers of the DACC - AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) organization. Students will divide into two groups: Mid School Age and High School Age. They will form teams and participate in a design competition which will be judged by local business and industry professionals. Prizes will be awarded. DATES / TIMES: July 6 - 17, 2015. 8:30am - 1:00pm (except July 8, 10, and 11, which are Field Trip days - see below) LOCATION: DACC East Mesa Campus: Room DADM 202 ('Home Room), Architecture Studio Classrooms & DACC Auditorium FEE: $175 including cost of overnight trip to Tucson, Az. (payable by June 22, 2015). This camp fills fast, and official registration is not complete until all forms and payment are received therefore, it is recommended that this process be completed as soon as possible. Read below for further instructions. Failure to meet the deadline will result in student being disenrolled thus allowing students on the Wait List to be automatically enrolled. Should space still be available, it may be possible for disenrolled students to re-enroll, provided the fee and forms are promptly submitted. REGISTRATION PROCEDURE: In order to complete registration, follow the following 3 steps: Step 1: Fill out all the student and parent information on this webpage. Read all documents, rules and policies, and completely fill out the required forms found on the 'Required Forms For Parents' link at http://dacc.nmsu.edu/adc/for-parents.html . Completely fill out each form and submit along with the required Camp fee. COST TO STUDENT: $ 175.00 including cost of overnight field trip, plus personal classroom supplies: 8.5" x 11" SketchBook, USB drive, and lunches/snacks. TWO FIELD TRIPS ARE PLANNED (Included in cost): General information below. View the 'Program Overview & Rules' page for detail information. FIELD TRIP 1: Wednesday, July 8 - LOCAL FIELD TRIP. This is an extended day, beginning at normal time but ending at 3:00pm. NMSU vans will be utilized. We will visit a local architecture firm, a construction site, and a 'project' site. Students will need lunch money. Parents welcome on their own. FIELD TRIP 2 - Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11: Tucson, Az. These are also extended days beginning at 5:45am on Friday and ending at approximately 8:00pm on Saturday. NMSU vans or a Chartered Bus will be utilized. In Tucson, we will visit an architecture firm, the University of Arizona School of Architecture, museums, architectural sites, and Old Tucson (a film studio and amusement area). Students will need lunch money. Parents welcome on their own. ARCHITECTURE MOVIE NIGHT: Tuesday, July 7. 6:00 - 8:00pm at DACC East Mesa Auditorium. This event is sponsored by the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Meet local architects and architecture students & faculty. PARENT ATTENDANCE & SUPPORT: Parents, plan on attending the first day of Camp for at least the first hour. You should also plan on attending the field trips on your own if possible, and DEFINITELY the last day of Camp, when the students' Final Design Competition Projects will be presented and judged by local architects, followed by lunch and the awards and recognition ceremony. Please encourage your child to go to sleep early, get plenty of sleep, and prepare for the next day in order that he/she will arrive early and be alert throughout the day.
