Deflamos environmentally friendly flame retardant Apyrum selected for
prestigious German Research Project
April 17, 2015: Deflamo, a Swedish company developing and manufacturing eco-friendly flame
retardant products under the brand name Apyrum, has been selected to be part of the German
research project “Biogenic Flame Retardant”, aiming to develop an innovative biogenic flame
retardant for fiber reinforced formed parts with biogenic thermosetting resin matrix. The end
product shall be used in application areas with fire protection requirements, such as the
electrical industry in particular, but also the construction industry, automotive engineering and
railway vehicle manufacturing. The project is financially supported by FNR (Fachagentur
Nachwachsende Rohstoffe), the central coordinating agency in the area of renewable resources
in Germany, with a total amount of €360 000.
The research project is managed by the German institute Transferstelle Bingen (TSB), founded
in 1989 as a technology transfer institute and associated with Fachhouchschule Bingen - the
University of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Bingen. TSB is specialised in energy efficiency,
renewable energy, and sustainability. The project is supervised by Prof. Dr. Oliver Türk, and run
in cooperation with Bio-Composites and More GmbH, BYK Additives and Instruments and
Pracht group.
“We are very excited to be part of a research project that involves some of Germany’s leading
expertise within sustainability”, says Mr Fredrik Westin, CTO at Deflamo, and continues: “It also
reflects the current shift on the market, where more and more companies and manufacturers

choose to phase out hazardous flame-retardants in favor of alternative technologies that are
both high-performance and environmentally superior. Many companies want to be in the front
line and replace them before they get banned.”
“Biobased thermosetting composites that are ready for the market are rare. Introducing
Deflamo’s mainly biobased Apyrum into the existing biocomposites and thus approaching the
100 % biobased content with a flame retardant composite will lead to an outstanding market
position of the product“ says Prof. Türk, Project Manager at TSB.
About the project
A composite consisting of natural fibers and an extensively biogenic thermosetting resin matrix
based on epoxidized vegetable oil shall be equipped with Apyrum, Deflamos mainly biogenic
flame retardant. Apyrum is based on annually renewable resources and an alternative to the
generally used mineral flame retardants such as antimony trioxide or ammonium phosphates.
On the raw material base, a semi-finished composite product shall be developed, which can be
used for the production of molded parts in application areas with fire protection requirements,
such as the electrical industry in particular, but also the building industry, automotive
engineering, and railway vehicle manufacturing.
Within 5 partial projects, the flame retardant shall be investigated from extraction and supply
through contact with semi-finished products made of natural fibers to their procession into
bio-composites. In parallel with the processing attempt, the specimen´s main fire safety
properties and the mechanical characteristics are tested.

About Deflamo
Deflamo is a specialty chemical company that develops, produces, and markets the environmentally-friendly flame retardant
Apyrum for the manufacturing industry and service companies in Europe.
Apyrum is a patented, environmentally-friendly, and biologically degradable flame retardant that is competitive in industrial use.
Today Deflamo cooperates with industrial companies that manufacture products made from plastic, paper, wood, and other
materials used in construction, vehicles, electronics, etc. where high demands are made on fire protection, the environment, safety,
and health. Apyrum replaces hazardous flame retardants that contain, for example, bromide, chlorine, antimony, boron, and
phosphate esters with substances that are not harmful to health and the environment.
Deflamo is a Swedish corporation listed on the equities market Aktietorget. It owns the patent for Apyrum's environmentallyfriendly flame retardant technology for Europe and part of Asia, an area that contains a third of the world market for flame
retardants. Deflamo's operations include development, production, marketing, and sales. A central part of the sales process is
technical project management, and together with the customer, Deflamo helps to develop, evaluate, and optimize their
manufacturing processes related to flame retardation technology.
