The President/CEO will provide innovative leadership and direction to the staff and over 500 members/program participants and overall management of the programs and activities of the association. MCIA provides certification and quality assurance services to a wide array of agricultural and food product producers and handlers. Products certified include field crop and turf seed, sod, native plant seeds, noxious weed seed free forage and mulch, identity‐preserved grains for specialty markets as well as organic crops, livestock and food products. In addition, MCIA provides customized quality assurance services such as field inspections, seed and grain facility evaluations, as well as third party assessments and audits. MCIA also conducts a foundation seed services program producing and distributing Foundation seed and serves as the University of Minnesota’s marketing agent for crop varieties. JOB SUMMARY:
Provide innovative leadership and strategic direction to the staff and membership of MCIA and general
management of the programs and activities of the association.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Advise the Board of Directors of the general direction, performance and priorities of MCIA.

Lead the development of long and short term performance and business development objectives and
strategies and communicate to staff, Board of Directors and association membership.

Identify business opportunities and develop and implement programs to effectively serve MCIA’s
customers in accordance with MCIA’s mission.

Monitor staffing levels, recruit, hire and direct training of qualified personnel.

Manage MCIA finances to ensure financial stability through proper payment of bills, collection of accounts,
record keeping, budget preparation, report preparation, regulatory compliance and regular reporting to
the Board of Directors.

Monitor MCIA’s investment portfolio to ensure implementation of MCIA’s Investment Policy, recommend
policy revisions and regularly report on investment performance to the Board of Directors.

Provide general management in the administration of employee benefits, insurance and taxes to
adequately protect MCIA, its employees and Board of Directors.

Supervise and evaluate performance of management personnel. Determine salaries for staff.

Ensure that MCIA programs are carried out in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations
and AOSCA standards.

Provide direction and management for all general meetings of the association.

Provide general management for the maintenance, repair and improvement of MCIA building and
equipment.

Maintain regular contact with University of Minnesota administration and researchers performing activities
related to the MCIA mission.
NON ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Liaison and provide technical leadership and support as appropriate with AOSCA, ASTA, USDA, MDA and
other related trade organizations and regulatory authorities.

Identify key contacts and build relationships with the seed, feed, food and related industries.

Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree

Extensive experience in research, education and marketing programs related to agricultural
production, quality assurance and management.

Skills, knowledge and experience in business management to effectively manage financial
resources, human resources, space and facility requirements, information technology, safety
requirements and customer relations.

Skill in establishing sound programs and the ability to implement plans to achieve the
strategic mission of MCIA.

Ability to allocate the financial resources of MCIA

Skillful in coaching, evaluating and motivating personnel to achieve a high level of
performance.

Knowledgeable about seed variety development principles, relevant industry practices and
related regulatory matters.

Skill in communicating strategic information, ideas and concepts to the association
membership.

Knowledge of relevant certification and regulatory requirements related to MCIA program
offerings.

Advanced degree or extensive experience in Agribusiness or related food sciences.

Extensive agri-food industry business management experience desirable.
ENVIRONMENT and COGNITIVE/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Solid math and analytical skills

Effective verbal and written communication skills including use of phone, computer, speaking, listening.

Ability to plan, problem solve, negotiate and persuade customers.

Computer literacy.

Must be able to supervise others

Able to travel extensively throughout the state and as necessary nationally and internationally.

Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
