This documentation will make your license activation easy. You'll learn how to use the software in demo mode or how to conveniently activate productive licenses in a few steps, plus a lot more. Under the Cortado brand name, you get a complete solution for integrating mobile devices into your business. Cortado offers you far more than just mobile device management. Cortado’s Advanced MDM enables flexible management of devices and users, as well as the implementation of company policies and comprehensive application management. Cortado Corporate Server combines secure access to the company network with a unique cloud desktop concept. You benefit from secure access to centralized corporate data from any location, flexible document management and extensive editing options – regardless whether access is achieved via a smartphone or tablet using a native app or over an HTML5 based browser on a PC or Mac. Furthermore the brand name ThinPrint offers you lot of products. Especially the ThinPrint Engine as the world's leading standard printer software, both for all virtualization solutions, such as Microsoft Remote Session Host (Terminal Server), Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenDesktop, VMware View, as well as for classic desktops. As such, it offers driver-free printing that includes high-level security for the print output. This highly scalable solution runs for example on the central print server and ensures not only trouble free printing, but also optimal printer performance, with a high compression ratio in every application. Mobile employees, home work stations and both large and small subsidiary branches can be easily integrated into the existing IT environment. Comprehensive features, such as an integrated tracking service, ThinShare or VirtualCopy complete your printing environment. ThinPrint's license and user management is equally convenient: a central license server makes all the required license information available to remote print servers and Remote Desktop Session Hosts and ensures greater efficiency in the entire IT environment. Demo download, license activation or reactivation, as well as software updates are described in detail and clearly illustrated. Take advantage of the useful tips and in a few steps, get started using your selected product. Overview The different types of ThinPrint and Cortado licenses are optimally designed for their different areas of application. Different licenses can be purchased according to system requirements. The use of Annual Licenses for licensed products could proceed as follows: 4 Manual Licensing.fm © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 1. Demo software is downloaded from our website for the desired product. Use for 30 days. 2. A full license with a 30-day test phase is purchased. 3. Within the 30-day test period, the purchased annual license is activated to full use for one year 4. User rights renewed annually by purchasing a new annual license, with update service. Introduction License Manager For all products (except ThinPrint Engine from version 10), the license manager will be installed automatically during the installation routine, onto the server on which the software is installed. License Manager can be opened in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). ThinPrint 10 operates with its own license server, which assigns licenses for ThinPrint Engine to the users. Read more in the License Server manual (Page 24). Illus. 1 Illus. 1 A valid (yellow), an invalid (red) and an activated (green) license in the License Manager Moreover, the different colors of the icons (Illus. 1) show you immediately which license keys are valid and which not. The color shows the status of the license. An exclamation point next to the key shows four weeks before expiration that the subscription (update permission) will expire. • • • • Green icon: license is activated Yellow icon: license is valid but not activated Red icon: license is invalid Yellow exclamation point (to the right of the icon): subscription will expire You can of course install and activate the license keys with unattended installation. This also applies for remote computers. The advantages of the License Manager: • • • • Central license management Display of license status (active/valid/invalid) Indication of expired update subscriptions Central unattended installation and activation of license keys © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 Note! License Manager offers the possibility to remove or destroy license keys. Be aware however, that once license keys have been destroyed they can not be reentered on the same machine – not even if they had been previously activated. Only use this option in the License Manager, if you wish to delete licenses irrevocably on this machine. For example, if you wish to transfer user license keys from one machine to another in order to split them between several servers. Licensing.fm Manual 5 Introduction Testing software and activating license keys Demo or 30-days license keys Free demo versions of the various ThinPrint products can be downloaded from: www.thinprint.com/→ DEMO DOWNLOAD. License keys are already integrated into the products, so that you can install and test them immediately. In this case, select DEMO MODE during installation (see Illus. 2). Here, a 30-days license keys will be installed. Illus. 2 Illus. 2 Select Demo Mode (example for License Server) Demo and 30-days license keys are fully functional for 30 days but cannot be activated. With demo license keys, output printed with ThinPrint Output Gateway displays a watermark. Once you have completed testing the software, you can purchase a full version from your nearest ThinPrint or Cortado reseller or distributor. It is not necessary to uninstall the demo software version and its license key(s). Note! Demo license keys haven’t got to be deleted from License Manager. The system applies the more valuable license automatically. Productive license keys In contrast to a demo installation, when you install a purchased product, you enter a productive (or full version) license keys. To do so, select ENTER LICENSE KEY(S) during installation (see Illus. 2). If you have already installed the software as a demo version and now wish to install the productive license/s without reinstalling the software, simply open License Manager on the license server. 6 Manual Licensing.fm © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 Caution! A new license key only works with current software. If you're not using the current software version, please indicate that when ordering new licenses, or send us a request for the appropriate license key for the version you're using. Introduction Entering a license – Select ADD LICENSE KEY in the context menu (Illus. 3); a new window opens (Illus. 4). Enter a license key here (case sensitive). Illus. 3 Illus. 3 Entering a license key Illus. 4 Entering a license key Illus. 4 – Confirm with OK. The license key is now listed under LICENSE KEY (left arrow in Illus. 5). A registration key appears automatically (right arrow in Illus. 5), and the time period during which the license key can be used without activation is displayed under VALID UNTIL. – Repeat this procedure for any further license keys, if required for the respective product (see Illus. 5 and the relevant manual). Illus. 5 Illus. 5 Licenses with registration keys © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 Caution! The License Manager offers the possibility of destroying license keys. Be aware however, that once license keys have been destroyed they can not be reentered – not even if they had been previously activated. All newly purchased ThinPrint or Cortado software has a 30-day test period, which should be used to configure the software to the specific requirements of your IT environment and test its function. After configuration and trial period, the license can be activated to allow its use without time restriction. (Illus. 14). Following this activation, the license is valid indefinitely – the date by VALID UNTIL is omitted. You will also see the end date of your license subscription. As long as your license has a valid update subscription, you can download and install software updates from our website (see section Initial installation of the subscription key on Page 19). Introduction Illus. 14 Illus. 14 Productive license activated In contrast to all other activated productive licenses, licenses in Annual License Model don't have a subscription key when first entered (see Page 18). Instead, the license manager displays for how long the license is valid (see column VALID UNTIL). The ThinPrint software no longer has a Valid Until time limit. Multiple activations (activation file) If you want to activate several licenses at the same time (see Create activation file on Page 9), you can do so simultaneously for all selected servers in the License Manager on the server LOCALHOST (Illus. 16). Use the activation file received from ThinPrint or Cortado or one exported from Enterprise Portal (Illus. 15). This text file contains a list of the servers, onto which the licenses and the assigned license keys, registration keys, activation keys and subscription keys shall be entered in the following syntax: • <IP address>:<license key>:<registration key>:<activation key>:<subscription key> or • <host name>:<license key>:<registration key>:<activation key>:<subscription key> Illus. 15 Illus. 15 Activation file exported from Enterprise Portal (example) © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 – Select in context menu LICENSE /ACTIVATION SET (Illus. 16) Licensing.fm Manual 11 Introduction Illus. 16 Illus. 16 Activating multiple licenses simultaneously – Open the activation file (Illus. 15), select the file contents, and use copy-and-paste to enter it into License Manager (Illus. 17). The following sections explain how license keys can be distributed and activated. Components for unattended licensing • License Manager (Illus. 26) The program component for entering and activating license keys is named License Manager. • License file (Illus. 18) This text file contains a list of the servers (onto which the licenses shall be entered) and the assigned license keys in the following syntax: • <IP address>:<license key> or • <host name>:<license key> The licenses file uses the .txt format and has to be ANSI coded (not Unicode). © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 12 Manual Licensing.fm Introduction Illus. 18 Illus. 18 License file for licensing two servers (example) Note! If you wish to install or activate license keys on Microsoft Failover Clusters, make sure that the appropriate cluster node, and not the cluster instance, is selected as the server address (target host) in the license file. (Failing to do so will result in passing the licenses through to the cluster node that is active at that moment, and that may be the wrong one. See the technical information Microsoft Failover Clusters and ThinPrint (www.thinprint.com). • Activation file (Illus. 15) The activation file is created automatically by License Manager. Its structure is the same as that of the license file – with two exceptions: • After installation of license keys, it also includes the hardware specific registration keys. The activation file is sent in this form to ThinPrint. • ThinPrint adds the activation keys to the activation file and returns it to you. This file is used for activation. The activation file will then contain an entry for each server as follows: • <IP address>:<license key>:<registration key>:<activation key> or • <host name>:<license key>:<registration key>:<activation key> The activation file also uses the .txt format and has to be ANSI coded (not Unicode). • Log file (Illus. 25) The activation file created after the licenses have been entered contains additional information about the ensuing licensing process and therefore also serves as a log file. Should errors occur, this file will include their error messages, which are helpful during troubleshooting. Process © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 Prerequisite: License Manager must already be installed wherever license keys are going to be activated. For example, this will have been done automatically when installing ThinPrint Engine. 1. Open the command prompt. Change to C:\Program Files\Common Files\ThinPrint if necessary. Licensing.fm Manual 13 Introduction 2. Start automatic license input with: rundll32 "<path>\TPLicMMC.dll",Licman -u:"<path>\<license file>" -w:"<path>\<activation file>" Example (Illus. 19): rundll32 TPLicMMC.dll,Licman -u:licenses.txt -w:activation.txt Illus. 19 Illus. 19 Starting unattended licensing (example) It is required to enter the parameter -w and specify the activation file; any name can be chosen for the activation file (format: .txt; ANSI coded, not Unicode). A parameter description can be found on Page 17. Note! If the license file contains several server addresses (Illus. 18 and 15) License Manager executes the installation, as well as the activation, of license keys remotely. Prerequisite: License Manager must already be installed on the remote servers and can be reached. 3. Complete the activation file Afterwards upload the activation file (Illus. 20) in the Cortado Enterprise Portal (enterpriseportal.cortado.com→ CUSTOMER VIEW) by clicking the button (see arrow in Illus. 10). Illus. 20 14 Activation file after licensing two servers (example) Manual © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 Illus. 20 Licensing.fm Introduction Illus. 21 Illus. 21 Importing an activation file to the Enterprise Portal Within one workday you will receive the activation file by e-mail. Automatic renewal of update subscription Automatically entering and activating licenses also lets you renew your Update Subscriptions. If the activation file sent by ThinPrint does not already include subscription keys (Illus. 15), enter the server address and the relevant subscription key in a separate line. The syntax for entering a subscription key is the same as the syntax for a license key. Introduction Note! Activation and subscription can be made in a single step by adding the subscription key to the activation file and loading these as above. Please note the correct sequence: <address>:<license key>:<registration key>:<activation key> <address>:<subscription key> Alternatively, the subscription key can also be entered later by opening License Manager after the license has been activated (see above section 2.). 6. Deleting license keys Caution! License Manager offers the possibility of deleting license keys irrevocably (using the DESTROY function). Be aware however, that once license keys have been destroyed they can not be reentered – not even if they had been previously activated! License Manager parameters Meaning ... Parameter ... with automatic license input ... with automatic activation -u Path to the license file Path to the activation file (got back from ThinPrint) -w Path to the activation file (to be sent to ThinPrint) Path to the log file Reactivation © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 If a fundamental system modification has been made to a computer on which a ThinPrint license has been activated (e.g., domain change or installation of Active Directory Services), it could invalidate the activations. In such cases, the licenses remain valid for 30 days and must be reactivated within that time, using a new activation key requested from ThinPrint or Cortado. The system resets the original green (activated) license key indicator to yellow (not activated) and VALID UNTIL shows a runtime of 30 days for this license, during which time the reactivation must be carried out. Reactivation of licenses is also necessary if the software is to be run on a different server (e.g., if the first server has been replaced), because the server will automatically calculate new registration keys. In this case use Enterprise Portal. Under Licensing.fm Manual 17 Introduction ADMIN→ CONTACT ACTIVATION TEAM (Illus. 27) you will find a form. Enter here the activation key, the new registry key, and a brief explanation why reactivating. Illus. 27 Illus. 27 Cortado Enterprise Portal – send re-activation request Within one working day, the new activation and subscription keys will be displayed in Enterprise Portal (for example in the CUSTOMER VIEW). Software updates You can download the new version of the desired software here: www.cortado.com/software. To perform a software update, the following preconditions must be met: • the license must have a current update subscription available (see below) • the subscription key must have been entered in License Manager (see section Initial installation of the subscription key on Page 19). If these conditions have been met, run the installation program Setup.exe for the respective software. Please read also Updating to ThinPrint 10 or higher on Page 20. Update subscription A valid update subscription authorizes the use of the latest software versions, without needing to purchase new licenses. You can get an overview of the validity period of your licenses in Enterprise Portal (for example, in CUSTOMER VIEW) under SERVICE RUNTIME (see Illus. 28). Illus. 28 18 © ThinPrint GmbH 2015 Illus. 28 Cortado Enterprise Portal – renew update subscription Manual Licensing.fm Introduction A yellow exclamation mark will appear before expiration next to the green icon of the license key in License Manager (Illus. 1, Page 5). If you have annual license, you can perform a software update within the validity period of the license. On expiry of the one-year validity period, a new annual license can be asked for in Enterprise Portal. You can request an offer to be sent to you by clicking on the button (arrow in Illus. 28). Licenses that are not ordered on the basis of the Annual License Models usually contain a 12 months update subscription if purchased. Software updates can be performed within this period. To extend the validity period, you can request a non-binding offer to be sent to you by clicking on the button (arrow in Illus. 28).The update subscription can be renewed at any time during subscription period. At that time you can take advantage of the “Early Bird Special”, at a reduced update price. If your subscription has already expired, then you still have six months during which to extend your update entitlement, using the “Update Service”. If the update entitlement has not been renewed six months after the expiration of the update subscription, no further update service is possible. Note! Even if the update subscription is renewed very early, the next subscription period of course first begins after the last period has expired. Initial installation of the subscription key In order to successfully complete a software update, you must enter in the License Manager your valid subscription key (an X is in the third block). You can find the subscription key in Enterprise Portal (for example, in CUSTOMER VIEW) under SUBSCRIPTION KEY (see Illus. 7 on Page 8). – Enter a subscription key together with the activation key under ACTIVATE and confirm with OK (Illus. 29). Then click on the activated license key in License Manager on the left (Illus. 30). The subscription key is automatically activated. You can now update your software released within subscription period. Updating to ThinPrint 10 or higher To update from an older ThinPrint version – e.g. ThinPrint 8.6 or 9.0 – to ThinPrint 10 or higher, proceed as follows: 1. Apply for new license keys in the Cortado Enterprise Portal (free of charge for customers with an update subscription): https://enterpriseportal.cortado.com 2. Install the License Server on a separate machine. This allows you to continue working with the old version until the new one is fully functional. Enter the new (ThinPrint 10.x) license keys there. 3. Perform an update of the ThinPrint Engine to version 10.x and specify the license server. 4. Delete your old license keys and complete the letter of destruction, which you then send to ThinPrint or Cortado. 5. Activate your (new) licenses and activate your users/user groups for ThinPrint, see License server manual: www.thinprint.com/manuals Appendices Customer service and technical support Customer Service • https://enterpriseportal.cortado.com/ with valid registration and pre-purchased support • Otherwise: www.cortado.com→ SUPPORT→ SUPPORT REQUEST Demo or 30-days license key 20 To use demo or 30-days license keys, select DEMO MODE during installation.
