NEWSLETTER May 6, 2015 Meet Mr. Kailem Boer, Math & Science Teacher DCS is pleased to introduce our new secondary math and science teacher, Mr. Kailem Boer. Mr. Boer will begin at the start of the 201516 school year. We look forward to getting to know Kailem and his wife, Courtenay, who will be moving here from the Vancouver area during the summer. After graduating high school and spending one more year on Vancouver Island, I headed off to King’s University College in Edmonton to study biology and math. At King’s I gained further appreciation for a Christian education as I interacted with professors who were excited and passionate about their disciplines. Very soon after arriving in Edmonton I met a lovely Edmonton girl who would later become my wife. Courtenay and I were pursuing the same degrees at King’s and so shared many classes. We were married at the bottom of Gallagher Hill on a windy day between our second and third years of our programs. I am very blessed to be married to a person with whom I share dreams. After finishing at King’s, Courtenay and I moved to Japan and both taught English for 2 years. There we had the opportunity to experience a new culture as we worked, traveled, and used countless vending machines. After that, we moved back to Edmonton and I joined the 2-year education program at King’s. This last year, Courtenay and I have been enjoying living in Vancouver. I have been teaching at various private and public schools in the lower mainland and Courtenay has begun her program at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine. She is studying to I feel blessed to be joining the Duncan Christian School combecome a Naturopathic Doctor and I am very proud of her. We feel munity in the 2015/2016 year. Packages can be picked up at the elementary school office, One more highlight was another DCS tradition: hiking the West preschool or you may download them from the school website Coast Trail. It was at times difficult but was ultimately a gorgeous trek www.duncanchristianschool.ca that expanded my love for hiking, camping, and anything outdoors. Questions can be emailed to dbrandsma@duncanchristian.com I would be remembering my teenage years incorrectly if I said that I found joy in doing homework. I did, however, discover during and after math class a love for teaching. Helping my friends find that “lightbulb moment” -- when an idea or concept suddenly clicks and brings a better understanding -- is what first made me realize that I would love to be a teacher.
