ABOUT THE NEW YORK POPS
The New York Pops, founded by Ruth and Skitch Henderson in
1983, is the largest independent pops orchestra in the United States,
and the only professional symphonic orchestra in New York City
specializing in popular music. Under the leadership of dynamic Music
Director Steven Reineke, the orchestra performs an annual
subscription series and birthday gala at Carnegie Hall, enjoying one
of the venue’s highest subscription renewal rates, and constantly reimagines orchestral pops music. The New York Pops’ annual birthday
gala is celebrated each spring, raising funds for the orchestra and its
broad-based education programs serving 3,000 children annually in 25
New York City public schools. The orchestra has an ambitious longrange artistic plan to launch new performance projects in the boroughs
of New York City; these projects are expected to increase the annual
operating budget from $1.6M to approximately $2.5M over the next 35 years, with corresponding increases in fundraising goals—particularly
corporate sponsorships.
Now in its 32nd season, The New York Pops celebrates the diversity of
popular music’s evolving songbook. Every concert is a unique experience, with influences ranging from Broadway
melodies to film scores, jazz, rock, pop and everything in between. The orchestra collaborates with stars from the
stage and screen, such as Tony Bennett, Michael Feinstein, Megan Hilty, Idina Menzel, Kelli O’Hara, Miss Piggy,
Pink Martini, John Pizzarelli, and many more. Past media projects have included the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks
Spectacular on NBC Television, a nationally syndicated radio series, and performances on PBS. The orchestra has
toured throughout the world.
ABOUT STEVEN REINEKE, MUSIC DIRECTOR
Steven Reineke’s boundless enthusiasm and exceptional artistry have
made him one of the nation’s most sought-after pops conductors,
composers and arrangers. In addition to serving as Music Director and
Conductor of the Pops, Mr. Reineke is Principal Pops Conductor of the
National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, and Principal Pops Conductor of the Toronto Symphony
Orchestra. He is a frequent guest conductor with The Philadelphia
Orchestra, and has appeared with the Boston Pops, The Cleveland
Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia. His extensive North American conducting
appearances include San Francisco, Houston, Seattle, Edmonton and Pittsburgh. As the creator of more than one
hundred orchestral arrangements for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and the composer of symphonic and wind
ensemble compositions, Mr. Reineke’s work has been performed worldwide.

organizations, children’s hospitals and senior centers throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The
organization’s PopsEd program allows thousands of New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds to participate in
fully customizable music programs that blend traditional education with pure fun. PopsEd makes music open to all,

PopsEd AMBASSADORS, chaired by Music Director Steven Reineke and

LESSON-BASED RESIDENCIES allow professional musicians to work directly
with a school's existing band, orchestra or choir, through small group sectionals
and/or large group rehearsals. These sessions focus on instrumental technique
as well as theoretical and stylistic elements of music.
COMPOSITION-BASED RESIDENCIES use contemporary "street percussion" and traditional musical instruments
to encourage students to express themselves through composing and performing their own original music.
CONCERT-BASED RESIDENCIES are produced in public schools, community centers, hospitals, and senior
centers, using a variety of genres and styles of music to create interactive and entertaining experiences outside of
the concert hall.
FAMILY CONCERTS are designed to create access for all members of the
community. Thousands of children and their parents have enjoyed the
opportunity to see The New York Pops during interactive and educational
family concerts in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute.
