Wisconsin
Music & Memory Initiative
Overview
The Wisconsin Department of Health
Services is supporting 100 Nursing
Homes to participate in the Wisconsin
Music & Memory Initiative.
The Wisconsin Initiative is part of a
national program designed to help people
with Alzheimer’s and related dementias,
find renewed meaning and connection in
their lives through the gift of
personalized music.
The Wisconsin Music & Memory
Initiative is funding 100 Nursing Homes
to become certified as a Music &
Memory facility, as well as providing the
equipment needed for 15 residents with
dementia to experience the Music &
Memory program.
Visit our website for more information:

A Certified Program
A core feature of the initiative is the
certification of the nursing homes as a
“Music & Memory” facility. This
designation assures that the nursing
home has received:
• Step-by-step Professional Training in
Personalized Digital Music.
• Instruction based on extensive
neuroscience research regarding the
brain’s response to music.
• Training to create personalized
music play lists, delivered using
iPods© or related digital audio
devices, that have the capacity to
transform quality of life for people
struggling with a wide range of
physical and cognitive impairments.
“iPods are having a huge impact here…
Families are excited about how their loved
ones are more active in conversation, in
better moods, actually awake and more
engaged throughout the day. Staff are
asking for more involvement because they
see people being more cooperative with
cares, meals, and other activities.”
