Gaddy in his homily last weekend. (First 5) 1. Live and let live: All of us will live longer and more happily if we stop trying to arrange other peoples' lives. Jesus challenged us not to judge but to live with the tension and let God and history make the judgments. So live! We need to live by our own convictions and let others do the same. 2. Be giving of yourself to others: Happiness lies in giving ourselves away. We need to be open and generous because if we withdraw into ourselves we run the risk of becoming self-centered and no happiness will be found there since "stagnant water becomes putrid." 3. Proceed calmly: Move with kindness, humility, and calm. These are the antithesis of anxiety and distress. Calm never causes high blood pressure. We need to make conscious efforts to never let the moment cause panic and excessive hurry. Rather be late than stressed. 4. A healthy sense of leisure: Never lose the pleasures of art, literature, and playing with children. Remember that Jesus scandalized others with his capacity to enjoy life in all its sensuousness. We don't live by work alone, no matter how important and meaningful it might be. In heaven there will be no work, only leisure, we need to learn the art and joy of leisure not just to prepare for heaven but to enjoy some of heaven already now. 5. Sundays should be holidays. Workers should have Sundays off because Sunday is for family: Accomplishment, productivity, and speed may not become our most valued commodities or we will begin to take everything for granted, our lives, our health, our families, our friends, those around us, and all the good things in life. That is why God gave us a commandment to keep the Sabbath holy. This is not a lifestyle suggestion, but a commandment as binding as not killing. Moreover, if we are employers, the commandment demands too that we give our employees proper Sabbath-time. My wife Sheryl and I cannot fully express how excited we are to join this parish community. Our marriage has been blessed with three children: India, Jacob and Zachary. Both Sheryl and I were raised in large Catholic families whose members still regularly attend Sacred Heart of Jesus of Lake Charles. We truly appreciate the warmth with which you have welcomed us thus far. I was born here in Lake Charles, and I am the youngest of thirteen children. My older siblings, in particular, my older sisters, played vital roles in raising me. I attended Sacred Heart of Jesus elementary school, and I graduated from Lake Charles High in 1973 (Go Wildcats!). I grew up loving to read, and I left Lake Charles at eighteen years of age in hopes of seeing some of the places I had only visited in my imagination while reading. Eventually, I graduated from San Diego State University and joined the United States Marine Corps. A few of the places in which I have lived are Okinawa, Japan; Taegu, Korea; Poway, California; Hanover, New Hampshire; and Fredericksburg, Va. My wandering days ended when I returned home for my mother’s birthday and met Sheryl. Ours is the classic love story of boy meets girl; boy chases girl; girl catches boy! I always tell people that after traveling half way around the world, I came back home and married the girl from down the street. Until recently retiring, I was employed by Citgo as a metal inspector, working both at the main refinery for fifteen years and at Cit-Con for five years. I ask for your prayers and patience with me as I am challenged by two personal demons. First, I have a difficult time recalling names. So please help me and repeat your name every time we meet whether it is on the church grounds or elsewhere. Second, I am a Dallas Cowboys’ fanatic and have infected my children. This condition may be incurable as my wife Sheryl, a Saint’s fan, has not been able to save me all these years. We are living proof that a mixed marriage can work. Sheryl and I recently completed five years of rigorous diaconal studies. Now, the real work begins as we are called to put our love into action. As I answer God’s call to be your humble servant, I ask that you continue to pray for me and my family. Yours in the Spirit, Deacon Harold J. Ruben Buller The Book of Revelation is one of the most enigmatic books of the Sacred Scripture. Yet, it is one of the most commented upon books as well. Most of the questions that are asked today have been asked in previous generations. Come to the OLQH Adult Faith Formation to hear the tradition of the Church concerning the Book of Revelation. Some of the questions that will be looked at are “Who are the four living creatures?,” “What does the Book of Revelation say about the End of Days?,” “What does the Book of Revelation mean when it talks about the 1,000 year reign?,” “Does the number ‘666’ reveal the identity of the Anti-Christ?,” and so many other questions. In the end, we will see that the Book of Revelation is not about fear, but about hope. Come and experience the reason for the hope that the Church had in placing the Book of Revelation in Sacred Scripture. Join us for this 4-part series in the FLCC Activity Room on Mondays – September 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 6:00 – 7:45pm. We will begin with a light meal each night. Bring Your Bible! The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of the land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry Giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy and overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea. Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where stormless eternity awaits us.
