THE GABRIEL PROJECT IS AT OLQH!!
Spread the Good News! Tell your family, friends,
and co-workers about this ministry right here in the
Diocese of Lake Charles. GET PEOPLE TALKING
ABOUT THIS! Help us save the lives of both mothers and babies - we (The Church) are waiting anxiously to help. “We, the members of this church
community, see in the birth of each baby a fresh expression of God's unfailing love. For the love of
God and each and every one of his children, we offer immediate and practical help to any woman
faced with what might seem to be a crisis pregnancy. The only condition is that the child be allowed to
live.” Call Felicia at 477-1236 with questions.

 Matthew 22:21
This week begins Pastoral Care Week. We wish to thank all of our faithful
volunteers who regularly become the image of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the
Church to all those who are homebound or ill. And to those who are suffering
illness or are caring for a loved one who is, please know that your parish community supports you and relies on contact from you to put these ministries into
action on your behalf.
Those stricken with illness or caring for a loved one who is hospitalized or
homebound know the value of a pastoral visit from either a member of the
clergy or a homebound minister. There is an indescribable comfort in this
gentle reminder that you are still very much a part of our parish community of
faith.
Whether it is the Blessed Sacrament brought to your residence or care facility
by an Extra-Ordinary Minister of
Holy Communion; the comfort of a
prayer blanket when receiving medical care away from home; the
beauty and simplicity of a nursing home Mass; or a simple, friendly visit from a fellow parishioner, all of these various ministries
rely on volunteers who step forward to be the hands and feet of
Christ. And in those times of serious illness or surgery, the reassuring comfort and strength offered in the Sacrament of the Anointing
of the Sick cannot be measured.
Especially this Pastoral Care Week, please remember in
your prayers all those who are suffering from illness, incapacitated
or homebound and all those who step forward to minister to them
in their time of need.

IRENE MCGEE
Want a challenge? Find a diocesan parishioner that
has spent more time studying God’s truth than Irene
McGee. Her untiring quest to increase her understanding of Christ’s teaching is her passion and as a
result, our blessing.
Since August 2000, Irene has been the Resource
Consultant at Crossroads Bookstore. Her background and commitment to the Scriptures makes few
laypersons, if any, more qualified to consult on matters of faith. Her search for knowledge began in the
early 70’s, while living in Arkansas, when she
joined Bible Study Fellowship. After a few years she
wanted more and with others was a member of the
initial Little Rock Scripture Study (LRSS) group. In
1984, she brought her talents to Lake Charles and
was instrumental in the establishment of the LRSS
throughout the diocese, an effort that included her
serving for many years, as its Director at Our Lady
Queen of Heaven Church Parish.
Still not satisfied, she took it up a notch and enrolled in the Loyola Institute of Ministry extension program
(LIMEX), a 4 year graduate theology program. Having completed LIMEX she entered and completed a two
year Spiritual Director program taught by Father Don Piraro. See what we mean about qualified; it’s starting to get a little intimidating, isn’t it?
Professionally the only thing as intense as her search for information is her desire to share what she knows
with others. She takes Crossroads on the road, traveling to the parishes in our Diocese, taking orders, delivering merchandise, and consulting with clergy, youth ministers, directors of religious education, and others.
She will tell you nothing gives her more pleasure than finding a hard-to-find item for one of her customers.
In addition to her work at Crossroads, Irene is a Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and
member of the ACTS community. She volunteers to lead the Rosary at Villa Maria and funerals. She has
also been a fixture at the Multi-cultural Festival preparing for us Mexican dishes she perfected as a kid
growing up in El Paso. She is married to Harlan and between them they have six children, 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
When you walk into Crossroads you can find a lot of treasures. There is that perfect gift for a niece celebrating her First Eucharist or that book meant to comfort a grieving loved one. However, if you don’t walk
to the back of store, all the way to the office on the right and peak over the stacks of books and purchase
orders, you may miss one its greatest treasures, Irene.

NEW FUNERAL BROCHURE (AVAILABLE AT CHURCH ENTRANCES)
The Diocese is pleased to present a Funeral Brochure. The brochure includes important information
regarding Cremation and Words of Remembrance.
It is important that all of us know and understand
what the Church expects of us in these situations.
The document addresses these issues from a pastoral, canonical (Church law) and liturgical standpoint. It does not replace having a conversation with
your parish priest or deacon when planning a funeral for a loved one. The Diocese hopes that the material found in the brochure will help to make a very
difficult time a little easier as we entrust our loved
ones to our merciful and loving God.
