April 2015 Issue 24
Keeping you informed
Congratulations to……
Mrs Payne who has been appointed Head of the Humanities Faculty. Mrs Payne has been
overseeing the Faculty since Mr Sweeney was appointed to the post of Assistant Principal and we
are delighted that she has now secured the position on a permanent basis. Miss Dean, who has
been overseeing the Science Faculty since Mrs Offer secured the Assistant Principal post, has
been appointed Head of the Science Faculty.
This is a particularly busy time of year for recruitment and I am delighted to also be able to inform you that Miss Sum
has secured a permanent post in English and we have also appointed a new Head of Art, Miss Couilliard, a new
Head of Girls’ PE, Miss Redstone, a teacher of Art, Miss Kells, and a teacher of Maths, Mrs Ovenden, all of which
will join us in from September 2015. We are also interviewing for an additional SEN Teacher and MFL Teacher,
and I will let you know after Easter whether we were successful in filling these vacancies.
What is especially pleasing for me is seeing how successful our staff are when they applied for promoted posts
against a national field of candidates. At a time when recruitment is becoming more and more difficult for schools
our policy of ‘growing our own’ seems to be paying dividends.
We are saying a fond farewell to Mrs Grey who has been supporting in our Print Workshop over the last five years
or so. She has been instrumental in redesigning our Newsletter. She was also instrumental in producing superb
materials for the energy exhibition which was held in the local Museum last year. We would like to thank her for all
her hard work and support during this time and we wish her every success for the future.
Congratulations also to Emily Haskell, Megan Brogan, Shani Kirk and Zoe Bennett from within College who have
successfully got through to the national table tennis finals. Many thanks goes to Mrs Haskell who has been
overseeing their success and supporting them through many tournaments. We look forward to hearing how they
fare in the national finals. What a magnificent achievement this is and how proud we are of our girls.
This week has been a busy week with the Year 11 revision evening, the Easter Concert and the Sixth Form quiz.
I would like to thank everyone who has supported these events and helped them to be so successful.
I wish you all a very enjoyable Easter break and look forward to seeing our students return on Monday 13 April
2015.

It was a wonderful opportunity
for students to investigate
some of the career pathway’s
available to them.
They had the opportunity to talk to a whole variety
of professionals and get ideas of the job’s they
may like to have when they eventually leave
school.
It was a really good morning. Students were
exceptionally well behaved and a credit to the
school.
Well done to them all.

Curriculum Extension Week 2015
UPDATE
With just a few weeks to go before CE Week we are having a final push on student paperwork and
trip payments. Both are essential for helping students take part in their chosen activity. Therefore
I ask for your support to ensure that your child has:
-
completed and returned all the required permissions and health forms
paid in full for their chosen activity before the week commences
It is always extremely difficult to tell students they are unable to take part in their chosen activity
when payment or paperwork has not been returned. However, in order to be fair to all and to
ensure we honour our duty of care it is something we must do if either aspect above has not been
fulfilled by parents/guardians. Where paperwork is outstanding students have been spoken to and
new packs provided for completion.
As far as payments go, we have been delighted with the uptake of the online system for payments.
Over 85% of parents/guardians are using this system to pay for their child’s trip and helped reduce
significantly the amount of staff time we spend on processing cash or cheque payments. However,
there are a few parents/guardians who have not managed to keep to payment deadlines and as
a result I will be contacting some to agree non-negotiable payment schedules to ensure students
are paid for in full before CE Week. If you have fallen behind with payments or if finances are a
concern then please don’t wait for me to call, please contact the College on 01837 650910 so we
can discuss what options are available.
CE Week is always an extremely successful event and staff and students remember with
fondness the activities they take part in. Please help us to make sure that 2015 is no exception.

Richard Skull in Year 11 has done the College proud attending
the 2nd round of the Nesta Longitude Explorer Competition at
the NEC in Birmingham on Friday 13th March.
Richard was one of only 10 individuals chosen from hundreds of
applicants and has done extremely well to get to where he is so
far.
I will leave Richard to tell you what his day entailed.....
Miss McLintock
My day as a Longitude Explorer
Competitor by Richard Skull
As usual it was a cold, wet morning last week in Birmingham when we got on the train to the NEC (National Exhibition
Centre) . On arrival at the Big Bang Science Fair, NEC, we rendez-vouzed with the rest of the competitors and sat
down for the great day ahead. As all competitors began to set up, me with my laptop and presentation, we checked
out the opposing teams we were faced with… yay… I was up against Heathrow Aviation and Engineering UTC, a
sixth form college from the south east. After a quick chat (and a little bit of undercover work on their school) I
determined that they weren’t a competitor in aviation because they were doing a bus tracking system, although still
a ‘transport’ linked invention.
After a few hours of talking with researchers
and managers of international organisations
such as the BSA (British Space Agency) and
the ESA (European Space Agency) I finally
gave a presentation based on my idea to 4
other groups…including the UTC. It was
nerve racking, but I thought it went really
well.
I then had some time to wander around the
ground floor of the Big Bang Fair, which also
included an opportunity to hook-up with a lot
of the big names in aerospace technology,
getting contacts for future work experience.
In the afternoon we returned to our meeting point in the auditorium and all
competitors were presented with a raspberry pi (yum yum) for use when
developing our original design ideas
into a real life prototype. I was also
presented with a Bronze CREST
Award for my idea and presentation by
none other than the ESA astronaut
from France: Jean-Francois (pictured
below). Most definitely an amazing
day!
The next phase will see me continue
on with a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style
presentation that I must win in order to
gain entry to the top 10 ideas to enter
the finals, so wish me good luck!!
The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and
mouse. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages like
Scratch and Python.
Year 9 (XY1) have been working hard over the past
couple of weeks to develop ideas to submit to the
2015 Teen Tech Awards. Ideas have included a
doc watch, an alcohol disabling device, security
doors, history apps and a language earpiece to
name just a few.
The judges are looking for innovation and creativity
and if any of their ideas are chosen the next stage
will involve a trip to London for the students to
present to scientists and industry sponsors.

RLSS National Speed
Championships
Two members of Okehampton Otters Lifesaving Club
recently competed at the Royal Life Saving Society’s
National Speed Championships at the London Aquatic
Centre, at the Olympic Park in London.
Lachie Mills and Ben Bowles have been members
of Otters for 4 years but have only recently started
competing in Life Saving ‘Speed’ events so to race
in the National finals is really in at the deep end.
The event attracted over 600 swimmers from as far
afield as Scotland, Ireland and the Channel Islands
and ran for the whole weekend of 7th/8th March.
Lachie and Ben competed in seven events including
manikin towing, rope throws and obstacle swims.
They finished around mid table for all of their races
which was a good result for their first big
competition. They took everything in their stride and
thoroughly enjoyed the weekend – even the 12 hour
session on the Saturday! As a bonus they both met
with Mark Foster, a World and Commonwealth
Champion swimmer.
The boys train on Friday evenings (6pm – 7pm at
Parklands pool) with Okehampton Otters and are
hoping to enter more County and Regional events
this year – and hopefully back to the Nationals in
2016.
Maybe on
e
day!
Year 11 Graduation – Coming soon
Year 11 Graduation is getting very close. All students were given an A5 sheet
which explains how the Graduation points are given and what is needed to
Graduate. It also shows how points are lost.
Over the next couple of weeks the Year 11s should be collecting in any extra
points from after school or outside school activities to go towards the final
Graduation Score.
Students have been provided with a yellow sheet to record their extra points on.
Instructions for completing it are included on the reverse.
IMPORTANT DATE:
All year 11s should gather all necessary witness signatures and the
final tutor signature and present a copy to Treetops by 3.20pm on
Tuesday 21st April.
Any points handed in AFTER THIS DATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
These points are checked and added into the students Graduation file.
Tutors and Student Progress Leaders will be able to guide students through this process.
The Graduation Board will go up Friday 1st May.
If you have any questions, please contact Mr Wilson.
16 months to go
before we leave for
Ladakh!
Meet The Team
Each month you will get the
opportunity to meet a member
of the team to hear why they
are so determined to go to
Ladakh. This month’s Team
Member is Miss Parker:
“It has been a life long ambition of mine
to go to a country which is culturally
very different to Great Britain. It is very
easy to take for granted things like
electricity and having a supermarket
which we can easily drive to. I hope to
learn many things from such a
traditional society, where family, ecological awareness and faith are the most important things in their lives.
I am looking forward to being able to give something back to a local village too; it will be an amazing
accomplishment to see our eco greenhouse being built, knowing that we will leave something so valuable
for years to come.
The trekking part of the trip excites (and scares) me; I can’t wait to be surrounded by the untouched, natural
beauty of the Himalayas, sleeping under the stars and living within the local Buddhist communities.”
The trekking phase of our adventure
is going to be challenging both
physically and mentally. In order to
prepare our bodies physically, we
need to start training now. The NHS
state that people should be doing 150
minutes of physical activity each week,
so why not join us each month with our
training program?! This month’s
workout is the Cardio Hill Workout.
Please make sure you warm up with 2
minutes of gentle jogging on the spot
before doing the work out and don’t
forget to stretch off once you have
finished to avoid muscle soreness and
increase flexibility.
Training for Ladakh
Members of Team Ladakh have been very
successful in organising fundraising events to fund
their trip to Ladakh
We would like to thank you for supporting the students in their imaginative projects
because without your help, the trip would not be possible.
So far we have had a successful sale of Valentine’s chocolates, well attended Village
race nights and an exciting concert. George Morgan took part in a challenging
sponsored swim and Suzi organised a very popular quiz night; together these
events have raised over £2500!!
All money raised goes towards financing students to take part in the two community
projects in Ladakh; The building of a sustainable greenhouse for a local village and
working closely to support a local school.

South Africa Cricket, Sunshine and Adventure
I was one of 14 boys asked to represent
Devon on the Under 15 Cricket
Development Tour going for 19 days to
South Africa. The tour was made up of 7
cricket matches in both Kruger national
Park and Cape Town.
We started in Kruger where a taste of things to
come was on show as we saw our first herd of
zebras from the plane. We were taken everywhere
in an open sided bus through the park where we
saw elephants, wart hogs, leopard, hippos and wild
dogs on the way to the cricket, which usually made
us late. Kruger was 40 degrees, a bit warmer than
February in Okehampton. In Kruger we played 3
matches, one being a two day game, we won 1 and
lost 2. We visited a rhino park and had a talk on
poaching. One match had to be stopped for a
helicopter to land to collect a poacher who had been
shot by a ranger.
Next stop Cape Town, a different world from Kruger, a cool 32 degrees and where the poverty and
townships were everywhere. During our stay we visited a township
where no houses have running water or bathrooms and are made of
wood and galvanised metal sheets.
We played 4 matches; one was a two day match and we won 3 and
lost one, we were lucky to be allowed to play on the international
cricket ground rated 2nd in the world; Newlands Test Ground. My
best match was the 2 day match at Vinelands where I took 8 wickets
over 2 days. Overall I took 13 wickets.
The view of the mountain behind the pitch was spectacular
We were also taken to a premiership rugby match and cricket match,
visited Boulder Beach to swim with the penguins, went to a water
park to water ski and to the
beach and an evening visit to
Table Mountain. Overall I had
an amazing adventure which I
will remember forever.
Leon Horn
Year 10
Year 9 Student Christabel White received an honourable mention in the
2015 International Schools Essay Competition, for her 500 word piece
titled – My Vision for Sustainability Education.
Christabel was one of just 6 students in the UK to get the
recognition in the competition that attracted entries from
over 40 countries including Afghanistan, Indonesia and
Russia.
How to promote sustainability in schools?
All over the world, sustainability is being promoted in many different ways. For example:
conferences, TV adverts, magazine articles and so many more but the one thing that is lacking
is promoting sustainability in schools. So this is why I am writing this essay to try and give
ideas to promote sustainability in schools.
Sustainability is when you are reducing your impact on the environment and using natural
resources carefully, therefore creating a long-term ecological balance. Consequently promoting
sustainability to the wider community would mean setting a good example as a school. For
instance, simple measures such as: turning off lights when they aren’t needed, turning off
radiators or using energy saving lights which can easily reduce one’s impact on the
environment.
So, one way of promoting sustainability in schools would be to make a competition to see who
can make a poster to say how they are sustainable in the particular school/area. When I ran
this competition these were the rules:
•
•
•
•
The title is ‘My sustainable life’.
There must be pictures/diagrams as well as sentences.
It must be bright and colourful.
There must be at least 5 minimum points of how you are sustainable.
As well as trying not to use energy, sustainability is about using natural resources carefully,
which as I said before creates a long-term ecological balance. So another idea to promote
sustainability is to not waste paper or other resources daily. We do this by making sure that
every student in the particular school knows and understands how to use the different bin
types in the school. This really matters because if every pupil in a 1500 student school puts the
correct item in the correct bin, then we will save at least 1000 pieces of paper a month.
Another way of making sure that the pupil’s don’t waste paper any resources is to make it into
a creative competition. This competition would be to see who can write or design the best way
of not wasting paper. One way students can do this as follows: posters, leaflets, presentations
and by so many more means.
Sustainability is all about changing the way that we live at home and at school. The way I see
things is that if you want to promote sustainability you should definitely be creative. This could
be in so many different forms, such as: posters, poems, leaflets, assemblies and so many
more.
So I hope this essay has proved to you that being creative with sustainability is a brilliant idea.
By Christabel White, 13yrs old.

Devon young people elected to
UK Youth Parliament
Twelve young people from Devon have been elected to represent
the County in the national UK Youth Parliament 2013 to 2015,
following recent elections. Aged between 11 and 18, the young
people were elected out of 18 young people in total from Devon,
standing in the national elections.
More than 7,000 young people turned out to vote in over 50
polling stations across Devon; in schools, youth centres and
youth clubs, to elect Members of the Youth Parliament and
their Deputies.
They will now work locally in their Devon constituencies, with
their peers, to champion important issues for young people.
They’ll also work with County Councillors and MPs to get
their voices heard locally and nationally.
Representing North Devon, West Devon and
Torridge: 18 year olds Mel and Karenza, from
Barnstaple; Louis, aged 16 from Bideford; and Ryan,
aged 14 from Okehampton
Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet
Member responsible for Devon’s Youth Parliament, said:
“Congratulations to all the successful candidates. The outstanding
quality of candidates standing for election this year just goes to
show how passionate many young people are about improving the
communities that they, their families and friends live in.
“I am sure that these young people, just as those outgoing
members of the UK Youth Parliament have done before them, will
represent their constituencies well over the next two years,
focusing on younger people’s issues.”

The Easter Journey To be experienced up close and tangible
The Churches of Hatherleigh are working together to bring to you “The
Easter Journey”. It’s being described as the biggest undertaking of
bringing the Christian Easter story to life this part of the world has seen.
Inspired from a similar event in Germany, the town will see seven life sized
interactive displays retelling the journey of Jesus from Palm Sunday, his
donkey ride into Jerusalem and on through Holy week remembering key
moments including his death and celebrations with His resurrection. The
“Journey” will come to life with guided tours, storytelling, activities and
opportunities to reflect at each display.
Youth Event:
The Easter Journey will come alive for young people
including eating similar food to Jesus at the ‘Last Supper’ including how
he introduced ‘Bread and wine’. With live band and refreshments it should
be a great party atmosphere. 1st April, 7pm, Old Schools Hatherleigh.
All this will be open in a
variety of ways over 1st, 2nd,
3rd of April including a
children’s festival.
