Integrating skills into real contexts The use of English in contexts which recreate real life situations in the classroom is a must have tool for teachers to use. The lack of: time, ideas, human support, resources available and spaces to be used do make some teachers to abandon the idea of setting up a new genuine “speaking corner” in the English class. If this is your case, please do come to this practical and active talk where you will learn how to recreate successful real contexts in your English class. Jade Stevens Materials and mixtures matter. What’s going to happen? How can we find out? Children are naturally curious, and with the right planning and activities we can awaken a genuine interest in Science. This practical session will look at how simple experiments with everyday objects can help pupils investigate the unknown and record their discoveries and thus become more familiar with the scientific method. Speaking: bridging the gap from Infants to Primary. Most English teachers are aware of the big gap which separates infant from primary education at school. They all know a proper “methodological bridge” should be built between both educational periods, but do not always find the way to manage. By joining this talk, you will be offered a range of ideas and speaking activities which might help you to find your own way. Joanna Herbert Now you’re talking ... English! Children are generally unhindered by the selfconsciousness that often blocks older learners, but this is not always the case in the English lesson. This session will provide teachers with a variety of practical techniques and fun activities that will get reluctant learners using more spoken English from day one. CLIL up your lesson. Bringing CLIL into your Primary classroom need not be an intimidating task. CLIL-inspired activities can be designed to meet the needs and circumstances of every educational setting. In this session we will look at a variety of practical activities which can be integrated into the bilingual class, never forgetting the CLIL trinity: content, language and skills. Profesorado Inma Piquer Inma works at the Foreign Languages Service of the Local Ministry of Education (Catalonia) and as university professor the Universitat de Barcelona and Blanquerna (Universitat Ramon Llull). She has a wide experience as Infant and Primary Education teacher of English in Escola Sant Cristòrfor (Begues) as well as teacher trainer in the programme Impuls per a l’Ensenyament de l’anglès a l’Educació Infantil i Primària (Departament d’Ensenyament). She obtained her PhD with the entitled thesis: English language teaching to very young learners. Since 2002 she has been offering pedagogical talks and courses all over the country as well as publishing ELT articles in international magazines. Jade Stevens An experienced teacher and trainer, Jade has worked for The British Council in Europe, The Middle East, and North Africa. He has delivered Cambridge Training courses and trained Primary and Secondary teachers in various parts of the world. He currently works as a Teacher Trainer for Macmillan Education ELT. Joanna Herbert Joanna has been working in EFL since 1993, having taught children, teenagers and adults of all nationalities in the UK, Japan and Spain. After ten years in Madrid, teaching English and training teachers in both the public and private sectors, Joanna is now based in Alicante where she teaches at the Liceo Francés. She is a regular speaker at Macmillan Teacher Training events and she is also currently involved in writing course book material. She has worked with various Consejerías in Spain, and she has collaborated with the Alicante Cefire on several occasions, tutoring on their online and face-to-face teacher training courses.
