Our Speakers and Workshop Presenters for the 2015 National Conference
Keynote #1 – Dr. Joan Friedman
Dr. Friedman is a prominent and well-respected twin expert who shares her passionate views and insights about twins and
their emotional needs with twins and their families throughout the world. The fact that she is an identical twin and the
mother of five, including fraternal twin sons, makes her ideally suited to this conference. Her commitment to twin research
and her treatment of twins of all ages demonstrate the breadth and depth of her skills and experience. She conducts groups
for parents of twins and provides consultation about twin-related matters such as school placements, developmental
discrepancies, behavioral issues, and individuation struggles.
Dr. Joan Friedman - Helping Multiples Prepare for College (WS#1)
Deciding whether to send your multiples to the same or separate college should not be a last minute decision or an impulsive afterthought.
Well in advance of the application process, multiples and their parents must communicate honestly about each child’s wishes. Parental
input is crucial in determining if their multiples have the capacity to be on their own. Preparing for separate placements must begin well
ahead of the college years.
Keynote #2 – Dr. John Mascazine
Dr. John Mascazine, Associate Professor of Education, was a classroom teacher of twelve years at the elementary, middle,
and high school levels. His research areas of interest are in learning styles and twins and multiple birth children and their
school experiences. In this Keynote, Dr. Mascazine, will blend the experiences of twins and multiples in school and learning
situations with some of the current research on schools and learning. He will connect how the experiences of same-age
siblings informs and benefits peers and singleton students, as well as adults. John will discuss some of the popular programs
and research informing issues that affect same-age learners. He will offer examples of the uniqueness of each set of sameage siblings.
Dr. John Mascazine - Discovering your Children’s Potential by Discovering their Learning Strengths (WS#2)
John will highlight the tools parents, teachers and administrators can use to discover the learning style strengths of same-age sibling
students. He will provide resources and inventories to assist teachers and parents in making the most of the learning environments and
learning tasks, both in and outside of schools.
Patricia Kehoe - The Five Love Languages (WS#3)
Patricia will help you understand the basic concepts behind recognizing, understanding and implementing the gift of Gary Chapman’s wor k
on THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES. If you want to learn how to speak your child’s unique love language (whether your child is 4 or 17) then this
is the workshop for you. Participants will find this session to be interactive, informative, humorous and grounded in realism and
practicality.
Keynote #3 – Dr. Karyn Gordon
Dr. Karyn is one of North America’s leading relationship / parenting experts for organizations and families who specializes in
Generation Y (13-32 year olds). In this Keynote, Dr. Karyn empowers parents to bring balance back into their life by tackling
the tough topic of over-indulgence. Many kids / teens are living in a ‘buy now, pay later’ culture which is impacting their
decision making, priorities, spending and eating habits. This keynote is revealing and educational while teaching you
practical ways to achieve balance and wellness in your family life.
Susan Grinder - Keys to Handling Teen Anxiety (WS#4)
This workshop will begin with a discussion of potential causes of anxiety (societal stress, genetics, etc.). Susan will then discuss adolescent
mental, emotional and physical developmental levels, which leads us into how anxiety is an epidemic in our young population. Stats will be
presented about the prevalence of anxiety in elementary, junior and senior high schools. There are various types of anxiety a nd ways it
manifests, which will also be discussed. Lastly, we will talk about helpful strategies for reducing and eliminating anxiety.

Dr. Wanda Polzin - Mindful Parenting for Positive Mental Health (WS#5)
This workshop will discuss how mindful parenting can transform you as an individual as well as support change within your family system
through providing evidence-based research and related parenting practices regarding parenting infants, children, as well as teens. As
parents and caregivers, we can learn to be fully present with our child(ren) as well as ourselves. One way to do this is to bring mindful
parenting into practice and to learn how to parent from our insides out!
Patricia Kehoe - Puberty Multiplied (WS#6)
Is your worst fear your kids becoming a teenager? Or maybe you are living your worst fear!? There are numerous misconceptions about
teenagers and their search for independence and identity. What role can you/should you play in their development? Teenagers are facing
many changes and decisions, Patricia Kehoe, Psychologist and mother of teenage twins will help guide you through the minefield of
adolescence. Participants will enjoy an interactive, passionate and sometimes humorous look into the struggles teenagers have, and we
have with them.
Keynote #4 – Lisa Anderson
In 2010-11 Lisa and her husband finished their harvest and parked the pickup in their shed, packed up their 4 kids for 5
months and toured 6 continents on an extended family adventure around the world. As a past winner of the Canadian
Outstanding Young Farmer Program, and a victim of the BSE crisis, they know personally the ups and the downs of farming.
More importantly, they have learned the value of time with their children, doing what they love best.
Judy Arnall - Discipline without Distress (WS#7)
We are living in an exciting new digital world. Parents and caregivers need new tools! In this presentation Judy will explore modern issues
and concerns regarding discipline and parental anger, and examine typical child age-appropriate behaviors. She will distinguish between
discipline and punishment. Respectful age-appropriate tools will be presented.
Mardi Bernard, RN - Social and Emotional Support for Kids with Learning Differences (WS#8)

school. How do we teach our kids positive self-talk to build self-confidence to help them succeed in their lives?
Fred Sudfeld - The Family Centre – Couples Communication (WS#9)
