THE PRIZE BACKGROUND The AIF made a commitment to award the innovation prize for five years. The award was first launched at a side event to the Africa Union (AU)/ Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in March 2012, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Ministers attending this gathering passed a resolution that supported the IPA initiative, driven by AIF. The second edition took place in Cape Town in May 2013 and received full support from the South African government. The third edition took place in Abuja, Nigeria in May 2014 and was co-hosted in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria. So far the IPA has attracted around 3000 innovators from 49 African countries. Screening and selection for the 4th IPA edition is underway and winners will be announced in Morocco in May 2015. The day before the awards ceremony, a press conference with media exclusives will be held, followed by the official opening of an innovation market place (exhibition). An innovative workshop is also planned for the morning of the Awards ceremony day (13th May) and this will involve innovators and innovation enablers from various sectors. The workshop will anchor on what needs to happen to mobilize innovators, investors, policy makers and other key stakeholders to fuel innovation on the African continent. Prior to the awards ceremony, a detailed program will be shared, addressing all aspects of the event.
