Trade Mission to East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania and

TRADE MISSION TO EAST AFRICA
KENYA and UGANDA
23 - 27 March 2015
Have you considered exporting to Africa but are unsure of the potential of your product or
service?
African economies continue to outperform expectations. They are stimulated by an improved
policy environment, growing numbers of private sector businesses and rising private
consumption. Seven of the world's ten fastest growing economies are in Africa. Oil and gas
developments are on the increase, particularly in East Africa which is creating new business
opportunities for SMEs.
The mission will provide companies with the opportunity to visit and gain first-hand experience of
key oil and gas opportunities in East Africa.
WHY KENYA?
Oil discoveries have greatly increased the prospects of Kenya becoming an oil producer, making
Kenya a hotbed for exploration activity. Kenya has four major sedimentary basins (Lamu, Anza,
Mandera and Tertiary Rift) with a total surface area of 317,000 Km 2, Together, British companies
hold interests for about a third of the total exploration area. Kenya has 46 blocks, of which 44 are
licensed to 23 exploration companies. The government plans to create and offer seven new
blocks. Kenya is seeking to strengthen its role as the regional oil transit hub and will embark on a
host of new infrastructure projects, thus presenting several business opportunities for UK firms.
Opportunities in upstream, downstream and training activities are on the increase, and British
companies are advised to explore this market now, to gain a competitive advantage over
neighboring countries.
WHY UGANDA?
With over 80 oil wells drilled, a success rate of 87% and 3.5 billion barrels of oil in place, Uganda
has become an exciting frontier for oil exploration and potential development and production
presenting great opportunities to UK companies.
The first commercial discovery of oil in Uganda was made in 2006. Twenty oil and/or gas
discoveries have since been made, with five of these now at Field Development Stage.
The principle prospective area for petroleum in Uganda is the Albertine Graben covering an area
of 23,918 km2. Less than 40% of the exploration area in the Albertine Graben has so far
undergone exploration – further discoveries are likely – with the possibility of peaking at over 10
billion barrels.
