DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INTERVENTION:
BACK TO BASICS/BEST PRACTICES
In Columbus as well as in other parts of Ohio, practitioners in
the field of domestic violence education and prevention have
benefited for many years from a variety of agencies and
organizations providing help to victims. Several of these
organizations have undergone changes recently to expand and
improve services and in some cases have collaborated together
to coordinate service delivery. Please join us as we explore
these changes and best practices with experts in the field .

The program will be offered at The Fawcett Center (2400
Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43210), which is

TOPIC DESCRIPTIONS
“Overview of The Center for Family Safety and Haling and the Unprecedented Bystander Public Education Campaign” Karen S. Days,
MBA
The Center for Family Safety and Healing fully addresses all aspects of family violence, including child abuse and neglect, teen dating abuse,
domestic violence, and elder abuse. Our multidisciplinary team approach includes a one-stop, coordinated response to family violence for
individuals and families through partnerships with law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, and a wide range of community
resources along with an expanded forum for education, advocacy, and ongoing research. On January 8, 2015, The Center for Family Safety
and Healing announced a first-of-its-kind, public education campaign to raise awareness about family violence and increase bystander
reporting.
“The Danger Assessment Program: Preventing Intimate Partner Homicides.” Gina Patterson, Psy.D. and Steven Glick, CLEE
This talk will describe the process of collaboration between law enforcement and victim services in implementing a program to identify
intimate partner violence relationships that are at-risk for homicide or attempted homicide and to prevent intimate partner homicides using
Dr. Campbell’s Danger Assessment, lethality assessment instrument.
“Domestic Violence Sheltering in Central Ohio in 2015: How far we’ve come.” Nina Lewis, MSW, LISW-S
To best understand where we are in domestic violence sheltering services in Franklin County now and where we plan to go, it’s helpful to
have a better understanding of where we started. Are the ‘Basics’ the same now as they were in 1977? What about ‘Best Practices’? What’s
different and what did the civil rights and anti-war movements have to do with domestic violence shelters? Facility, program, staff, and
volunteers – it’s all the same, right? Or is it?
“Helping Survivors Heal: Understanding Trauma-Informed Care.” Rachel Ramirez, MA, MSW, LISW-S
The Center for Mental Health Services National Center For Trauma-Informed Care (NCTIC) cites that a trauma-informed approach is based
on the recognition that many behaviors and responses expressed by survivors are directly related to traumatic experiences. Come learn about
what a trauma-informed approach is and how to integrate this into your organization to promote healing and recovery for all victims of
violence.
