One of the highest forms of worship is unselfish Christian service. We need fewer words and more charitable works. We need less talk and more pity, less creed and more compaSSioN... Doctrine is important. But the Bible teaches also the importance of doing the things our Lord Jesus commands. In the city of Strasburg, Germany, is a church that was bombed during World War II. It was totally destroyed, but a statue of Christ which stood by the altar was almost unharmed. Only the hands of the statue are missing. The people of the church rebuilt their sanctuary, and a famous sculptor offered to make new hands to attach to the arms of the statue. But after considering the matter, the people decided to let the statue be, without hands. They said, “Christ has no hands but ours to do his work on earth. If we don’t feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, entertain the stranger, visit the imprisoned, and clothe the naked, who will?” Christ is depending on us to do the things that he did while he as on earth. Page 7 Lyon County Historical Facts Provided by Lyon County Historical Society Miss Henrietta Becker told of starting a “literary” when she was the teacher at Fairview school northwest of Hartford. In the interest of developing community spirit, the neighbors had programs, speakers, a Sunday school, and often, box suppers. Box suppers were very popular in those days. Young women would work hard preparing a beautiful lunch and then packing it in a decorated box. A girl was never supposed to show her boyfriend her box, but he was supposed to figure out which one was hers and then bid money for it and for the pleasure of eating with the girl. Boxes might be decorated like a flower garden, a ship, or perhaps like an umbrella, just decorated fit to kill! Later Miss Becker taught at Muttonhead school west of Hartford. Again the neighbors were very interested in promoting the literaries. Once while she was teaching there, three counties were represented at the literary – Greenwood, Coffey, and Lyon. People might hear of a program a school was giving and then would invite them to come present it. A school in Greenwood County was giving a program they called “Tom Thumb”. They loved giving it, and Muttonhead school loved hosting the program and inviting other schools to enjoy the program. School board members John Swanner, Orlin Edwards, and Martin Meuller were big promoters. It takes savvy to run a renowned rodeo company like Cervi Championship Rodeo. To start, you must have stock. The 850-horse herd the Cervi’s maintain in Stoneham, Colorado, sets a high standard for quality bucking genetics. Each year, the products of the breeding programs continues the streak of having a Cervi bronc buck at every National Finals Rodeo since 1967. In 2014, Vitalix Hells Fire Hostage bucked his way to two NFR round winning scores in the saddle bronc. The bucking bulls also give cowboys a run for their money. With more than 200 bulls between their Colorado and Texas breeding facilities, there is no shortage of athletic stock to choose from. At the 2014 NFR, E20 Mad Money was the highest marked bull of the night; according to probullstats.com, he has a 83.5% buck off rate. These are the quality of bucking stock the Cervi crew brings to each and every rodeo produced. No spectator leaves a Cervi rodeo disappointed in the bucking or timed event stock’s performance. The only marking is the one in the picture and it reads, "5325 Italy, Ardalt, Capodimonte Marino." Thank you, C. P. Dear C. P.: We are going to break down the mark step by step so this piece can be understood. First, the "5325" is a style number that refers to this particular box, or "casket." We do not know the size so we cannot be sure of the purpose for which this box was designed to be used, but we will speculate that it is a small jewelry box. Next, we will skip to the word "Capodimonte," which should actually be spelled "Capo-di-Monte," or "top of the mountain." But this is really just a quibble, because most modern spellings of this place name do leave out the dashes and capital letter and make it into one word _ and that is OK with us. The story begins with King Charles III of Naples, who established a porcelain making factory in 1743 at his palace just Treasures outside of Naples known as Capo-di-Monte. But when King Charles got something of a promotion and became King of Spain in 1759, he moved his best workmen, models and clay to a new factory near Madrid called El Bueno Retiro. Capo-di-Monte was idle until 1771, when King Ferdinand of Naples revived the factory and soon moved it into Naples proper, where it produced both soft-paste (artificial) and hard-paste (true Chinese-style) porcelain until 1821. Later, the molds were reportedly sent to the famous Ginori factory at Doccia, Italy. It should be noted, however, that Capo-diMonte's most famous mark _ a crowned "N" _ has been used by a rather large number of companies over the years, including E. Bohne of Rudolstadt, Germany, and Carl Theme of Potschappel, Saxony, Germany. The presence of the word "Italy" means the piece was made in that country in accor- SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2015 @ 10:00 A.M. It started its importing in 1945 after the end of World War II. Most of its wares came from Japan, but some did originate in Germany, France and Italy. The "AA" paper label is often found on porcelain giftwares of the low to middle range, and the particular piece belonging to C. P. was probably made sometime in the 1950s or '60s. Ardalt reportedly went out of business sometime in the 1980s. Finally, the word "Marino" seems to refer to the style of this piece with its design of sensual lovers and flying cupids. The products imported by Ardalt are considered by most collectors to be relatively modern, moderately priced giftwares, but the Capo-di-Monte name does help a bit. Still, the insurance value of this piece at this time is probably less than $50 (unless it is a large size). ___ Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson have written a number of books on antiques. Officers volunteer hundreds of hours each year and in 2014 raised $522,632.45 in support of Kansas programs. This remarkable feat was accomplished by holding events and fundraising through the torch run, special event fundraisers (i.e. Polar Plunge, Truck Convoy), sponsorships and donations.
