GLOBAL VOICE, TEXT & FLIGHT TRACKING
WHY YOU NEED IT
AFIRS OFFERS A DIRECT COMMUNICATION LINK TO YOUR AIRCRAFT ENSURING SAFE, SECURE OPERATIONS AND GREATER IN-FLIGHT OPERATIONAL CONTROL.
The onboard satellite phone, using the Iridium satellite constellation is a rapid, reliable and private communication channel for the flight deck. When operating remote or oceanic flights that either
lack or have poor VHF/HF coverage, it allows dispatch to pass along updated information to the crew as soon as it becomes available. This capability is particularly valuable during emergency
situations or irregular operations. Updated crew assignments, crew repositioning, and tail swaps can be sent to the aircraft directly and immediately. The satellite phone and text messaging
capabilities are highly useful in managing diversions due to weather, mechanical occurrences, and other unforeseen situations.
MEDICAL AND OTHER EMERGENCIES
During medical emergencies the satellite phone can be used to request medical assistance from ground providers such as the MedAire’s MedLink Global Response Center. By using the 4-way
calling feature built into the AFIRS system enables the flight crew can listen in on the conversation along with flight operations, in order to make a diversion, or continue to the destination.
GLOBAL FLIGHT TRACKING
Real-time position data can be displayed on FLYHT’s aircraft situational display (ASD), FLYHTFollowTM, or through a third party tracking provider if requested. Reporting intervals are fully
configurable based on the phase of flight and can appear as real-time plots, showing the exact position of the aircraft. Weather can be overlaid onto the positioning map allowing dispatch to
foresee how weather may affect a flight and provide ground support. AFIRS connects to a variety of onboard systems; situational data can also be attached to the dashboard such as fuel on
board, departure/arrival airports, arrival time, etc. – enabling a much richer real-time view of the aircraft.

HOW IT WORKS – SENSOR TO ANSWER FOR GLOBAL TEXT & FLIGHT TRACKING
•
•
•
AFIRS offers telecom flexibility via conventional two wire “Tip and Ring” telephony devices. For the cockpit, integrated audio allows worldwide voice communications. Up to two wired or eight
cordless handsets can be added in the cabin providing intercom, call transfer, conference calling, camp-on calling and noise cancelling features.
Our Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS™) resides in the avionics bay and monitors the aircraft’s data buses such as GPS to enable precise tracking of the flight. Captured
GPS data is transmitted from the aircraft (at intervals set by you the operator) to the Iridium’s global satellite network and then to our cloud based servers. Our servers then pass data over the
Internet to your operations departments for analysis and reporting, which can be viewed on the FLYHTFollow ASD or a third party tracking system.
Text messaging can be sent via the built in MCDU or through an EFB including an iPad.

REAL-TIME EFB & IPAD CONNECTIVITY
WHY YOU NEED IT
SIMPLY REPLACING TRADITIONAL PAPER CHARTS, FORMS AND FRAGMENTED TECHNOLOGY (VOICE, TEXT, ETC) WITH AN ELECTRONIC FLIGHT BAG (EFB)
IS NOT A SUFFICIENT EVOLUTION TO CREATE A COMPELLING ROI FOR MOST AIRLINES.
In short, replacing paper for another electronic gadget is only an incremental step forward. It is not until the EFB is connected, live to onboard systems, ground systems and operators that
real-time connectivity, information exchange and decision making is enabled.
FLYHT is able to deliver real-time connectivity to EFBs ensuring that information is available to its flight crew regardless of their location. We help customers transmit flight releases,
performance calculations, weight & balance and text messages to their crew. Direct savings are achieved through reduced data transmission costs and faster turnarounds. Gone are the days
of waiting for information or performing timely manual calculations – information is readily available whether the aircraft is on the ground or in the air.
Building the business case for your EFB is a complex challenge since there is no single solution provider. Hence, you need to pull several disciplines together in order to create a solution.
We are experts in understanding:

REAL-TIME OPERATIONAL SAFETY ALERTS
WHY YOU NEED IT
ALERT
With FLYHTSafe airlines are notified immediately when a specific operational safety event has occurred that may have safety of flight implications. AFIRS is the only product that has an
embedded logic application (ELA) onboard that can identify with pin point accuracy when a specific event has taken place. No need to wait days or even weeks for the QAR data to be
downloaded or for outside personnel to de-code the data from an incident that may have occurred several days prior. With FLYHTSafe, you know in advance exactly when and where to look
for events that may require immediate action or further investigation. FLYHTSafe is an excellent addition to any FDM/FOQA program and can be used to assist in the development of safety
policies, training programs and standard operating procedures.

REAL-TIME FUEL MANAGEMENT
WHY YOU NEED IT
ON AVERAGE FUEL COSTS IN 2012 ACCOUNTED FOR 33% OF OPERATING EXPENSES FOR OPERATORS AROUND THE GLOBE, MAKING THE NEED TO SAVE ON FUEL IMPERATIVE.
Capturing fuel savings without easy access to quick and reliable data makes implementing a successful fuel savings initiative challenging if not impossible. This is where FLYHT’s Fuel
Initiative Reporting System Tracker (FIRST™) comes in. FIRST™ is designed to help you develop and capture your best practice procedures for flying the aircraft in each phase of flight
as well as documenting unnecessary fuel burn during ground handling.
ALERT
FIRST assists in the implementation of industry best practices (such as those described in the IATA Fuel Manual) which have proven that flight planning and careful attention to aircraft
handling - both in the air and on the ground reduces fuel costs and carbon emissions.

Our Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS™) resides in the avionics bay and monitors the aircraft’s data buses capturing the precise flight control configurations,
engine settings and other aircraft parameters in each phase of flight.
Captured data is transmitted from the aircraft (at intervals set by the operator) to the Iridium’s global satellite network and then to our UpTime™ data servers located on the ground.
UpTime in turn passes the data over the Internet to the aircraft’s operations department for analysis and reporting.
Operations are able to compare actual Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) compliance against the optimum execution of that SOP. Capturing actual flight control configurations
and comparing them with those in the optimal SOP gives operators the ability to pinpoint improvements for garnering fuel savings.

REAL-TIME OOOI (BLOCK AND FLIGHT TIMES)
WHY YOU NEED IT
SAVE ON PAYROLL AND MAINTENANCE RESERVE WITH ACCURATE BLOCK AND FLIGHT TIMES.
Crew pay, crew duty time, and maintenance tracking are all based on the collection of block and flight times. Historically FLYHT has proven that for a variety of reasons crews that
manually record the flight times routinely add an average of 2-3 minutes per flight. These errors unnecessarily inflate time on the engines, airframe, APU and can lead to over contribution
of maintenance reserves.
Perfectly accurate OOOI times translate directly into optimal crew utilization ensuring that crews don’t time-out ahead of schedule. As a result, annual crew schedules and projected labor
charges will accurately reflect the airline’s operating requirements for its current load capacity. Accurate hour and cycle information also extends the time between maintenance intervals,
maximizing utilization of life-limited parts. Precise OOOI times also lead to financial savings for operators on a power-by-the-hour contract, or lease contracts with a utilization component.
HOW IT WORKS – SENSOR TO ANSWER FOR REAL-TIME BLOCK & FLIGHT TIMES
•
•
•
Our Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS™) resides in the avionics bay and monitors the aircraft’s data buses capturing the precise flight control configurations,
engine settings and other aircraft parameters in each phase of flight.
These parameters are analyzed by embedded logic onboard the AFIRS unit according to a complex set of pre determined “rules”. The result is that a very accurate Out, Off, On, or In
event is automatically captured and sent over the Iridium satellite network to our cloud based servers where the message is formatted and routed to the internal systems at your airline
that require the message.
AFIRS allows you to customize and configure your block and flight times to record multiple events so that your OOOIs directly reflect your operating requirements. For example: An OUT
event can be as complex as doors closed, brake off, engine start, GPS movement of the aircraft. Block and flight times can also be integrated with your existing airline systems to ensure
maximum operational efficiency.

STREAM
REAL-TIME FDR STREAMING
WHY YOU NEED IT
FLYHTSTREAM™ IS FLYHT’S PROPRIETARY EMERGENCY STREAMING MODE PROVIDING PROACTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT FOR AIRCRAFT AWARENESS AND INCIDENT ANALYSIS.
When FLYHTStream is activated, an automated process sends real-time position and critical flight data recorder (FDR, black box) information to the ground. Flight Data Parameters, as
determined by aircraft type, are transmitted including: location, altitude, airspeed, pitch, roll, yaw, engine information, and airframe indicators. The data arrives from the aircraft within 15
seconds of the event. Streaming is critical for building situational awareness of an airborne event in progress, or for post flight analysis in cases where the FDR cannot be recovered.
SAFE
S
FLYHTStream eliminates the chance of key personnel being unaware of an emergency due to misinterpreted maintenance messages that may not indicate the severity of the incident. Data
can be immediately analyzed in order to determine the severity of the situation. With immediate event reporting and position tracking it is possible to enhance the provision of appropriate
procedures and resources to improve SAR reaction times.
HOW IT WORKS – SENSOR TO ANSWER FOR REAL-TIME FDR STREAMING
•
•
•
•
ALERT
Our Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS™) resides in the avionics bay and monitors the aircraft’s data buses capturing the precise flight control configurations,
engine settings and other aircraft parameters in each phase of flight.
FLYHTStream automatically transmits four-dimensional GPS-based position and flight data recorder information when automatically triggered by an airborne event, initiated in the air
by the pilot or on the ground by the airline. The real-time streaming of critical flight data to the ground creates a “virtual black box”, allowing the data to be analyzed immediately.
Captured data is transmitted from the aircraft every 20 seconds to the Iridium’s global satellite network and then to our cloud based servers. Our servers then pass data over the
Internet to your operations departments for analysis and reporting.
Personnel are automatically notified via an urgent email, text message, or through visual or audible notification on on your aircraft situational display.

REAL-TIME ENGINE & AIRFRAME EXCEEDANCE ALERTS
WHY YOU NEED IT
AFIRS HELPS BOTH MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS BETTER MANAGE OPERATIONS THROUGH MORE DETAILED AND INSTANT REPORTING OF PERTINENT FLIGHT DATA.
With real time engine exceedance alerts from AFIRS airlines are notified immediately when a specific event has occurred that may require further investigation. AFIRS is the only product that
has an embedded logic application (ELA) onboard that can identify with pin point accuracy when a specific event has taken place. No need to wait days or even weeks for the QAR data to be
downloaded or for outside personnel to de-code the data from an incident that may have occurred several days prior. With real time engine exceedance alerts, you know in advance exactly when
and where to look for events that may require immediate action or further investigation. Real time engine exceedance alerts are completely customizable and enable proactive maintenance of
your aircraft, engines and life limited parts. They are an excellent supplement to any FOQA/MOQA program and can be used to assist in the development of safety policies, training programs and
standard operating procedures.
HOW IT WORKS – SENSOR TO ANSWER FOR REAL-TIME FDM FOR FOQA
•
•
•
•
•
Our Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS™) resides in the avionics bay and monitors the aircraft’s data buses capturing the precise flight control configurations, engine
settings and other aircraft parameters in each phase of flight.
A proprietary Embedded Logic Application (ELA) that resides on the AFIRS applies pre-programmed “rules” to the data that identify when a safety related or maintenance event has occurred.
Those rules are customized to your operation and are update-able over Iridium giving the flexibility to change the parameters without having to visit the aircraft to update the fleet.
Events are transmitted from the aircraft (at intervals set by you the operator) to the Iridium’s global satellite network and then to our cloud based servers. Our servers then pass data over
the Internet to your operations and maintenance departments for analysis and reporting.
The notifications of these intelligent exceedances and events contain a history of pre-defined aircraft parameters for 10 seconds before and after the event to give context to the report.
AFIRS real-time reporting proveds instant information needed to launch an investigation, prior to getting the full QAR file for greater analysis.
Sensitive data can be automatically quarantined for analysis prior to be being deleted or de-identified, by restricting the reporting of specific sensitive events to just the gatekeepers.
The entire data flow is secure, unlike other types of simple fault reporting using traditional methods where data is transmitted openly over VHF networks.

REAL-TIME ENGINE TRENDING
WHY YOU NEED IT
ENGINE TREND DATA IS TRANSMITTED AUTOMATICALLY IN REAL-TIME FROM EVERY FLIGHT DURING TAKEOFF AND STABLE CRUISE.
Automated engine trend reporting enables more frequent and much more accurate engine monitoring. It is especially effective during the take-off when the engines are under the greatest duress
and pilot workload precludes the ability to capture the required parameters. In addition, rather than waiting for trend reports to be created manually – causing latency in trending – maintenance
has instant awareness of an evolving trend. Quick discovery results in more opportunities for preventative action.
AFIRS’ system reporting thresholds can also be set independently of the manufacturer’s limits, a capability that can be extremely valuable for trend analysis and vibration monitoring. Operators
can be alerted to issues that are becoming problematic but are still below standard reporting limits. One operator identified an unusual vibration anomaly that led to the discovery of a defect that
if left unchecked, would have led to a significant maintenance event. Others report substantial savings by extending engine on-wing time by having visibly on stressful engine events and taking
sustained action to eliminate the causes. For these customers, the engine OEMs are able to more accurately assess engine life and provide guidance on maintenance with the highly accurate and
frequent data they provide.
EXTENDED-RANGE TWIN ENGINE OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS (ETOPS)
FLYHT’s AFIRS real-time, automated engine trending system is capable of assisting an operator to comply with the following requirements.
The FAA and other agencies validates that an operator has:
•
•
•
•
•
A fully developed maintenance program, including parts tracking and control;
An engine condition monitoring and reporting system;
A propulsion system-monitoring program;
An ETOPS reliability program and maintenance manual;
A plan for resolving discrepancies with the airframe/engine configuration, maintenance and procedures (CMP) document.

GREATER ACCURACY, LESS WORK WITH LESS PAPER
The Dragon integrates seamlessly into the cockpit. Simply plug the Dragon into the pilot’s headset or
audio control panel and iPad for quick, intuitive dialing and call answering. In the event of an emergency,
a push of the Dragon¹s panic button dials a pre-set emergency number as determined by the operator.
With Dragon’s automated OOOI (block and flight times) time reporting through FLYHT’s Uptime portal
you are able to track and report your usage times for billing and maintenance purposes without the
traditional manual data collection and data entry processes. Automated OOOI’s will increase the
accuracy and speed of your reporting with far less labour and no paper.
GLOBAL VOICE CONNECTIVITY
Until the Dragon came along, cockpit satellite voice communications was not possible unless it was
through an expensive, permanently fixed avionics device. With the Dragon, operators can have a direct
voice link anywhere and anytime they need it - improving flight safety and providing greater operational
control.
TWO-WAY TEXT MESSAGING
With D-mail (Dragon E-Mail) on the iPad or iPad Mini, messaging to and from the aircraft is now
possible. Sending data to the cockpit has always been restricted by message length and archaic
interfaces. D-mail offers extended two-way text messaging that allows dispatch to send METAR,
TAF and NOTAM messages to the cockpit.
FLIGHT FOLLOWING & INTEGRATED AIRCRAFT SITUATIONAL DISPLAY
Many operators require flight following to comply with contractual obligations related to operational
control and asset management. The Dragon can feed your existing ASD for flight following and
operational control purposes and the Pilots, Dispatchers and Maintenance personnel will wonder how
they ever lived without it.
