The Skylight Ring 1 A MESSAGE FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR – DANIEL J. BRYLOW When I was first approached about adapting The Ring Cycle for Skylight’s studio theater show, I’ll admit I was apprehensive. How was I going to condense fourteen hours of opera into two while still maintaining the integrity of the Ring’s labyrinthine plot? Was there a way to tell the story in such a way that would respect the original while still allowing room for interpretation? Throughout this process, I alternately imagined Wagner encouraging me and rolling over in his grave – mostly rolling over in his grave, if I’m being completely honest. After all, it had taken him twenty-six years to write the thing! Who was I to mess with that? But ultimately I decided that the best way to respect Wagner’s magnum opus was to allow myself to take considerable liberties with the source material – just as Wagner had taken immense liberties with the Scandinavian and German myths upon which the Ring Cycle is based – but only when it was warranted by the new context in which The Skylight Ring would be performed: four performers, two hours, one piano. As you’ll soon discover, the single largest change is the re-focusing of the story from the perspective of Alberich, one of the Ring’s principal antagonists. In the original, Alberich is an important character to be sure – it’s Alberich who initiates the course of events by stealing the Rhine Gold from the Rhinemaidens – but after his initial appearance in the first of the Ring’s operas, we only see him intermittently, popping up here and there to remind us that the presence of evil is never truly far away. Throughout this journey, Alberich will be your guide, sometimes narrating the twist and turns of the plot, sometimes entering the action itself, sometimes commenting on the events as they unfold. My hope is that by hearing Alberich’s side of the story, we come to understand his feelings and the motivations behind his choices, destructive though they turn out to be. Like all great works of art, the Ring Cycle resists a single, definitive interpretation. Even the best production cannot take into account every surface of so multifaceted a gem. Accordingly, I make no claim that this adaptation is representative of the Ring Cycle in its totality, but if The Skylight Ring can shed some new light on a work of such dazzling complexity, then I will consider it a success. I hope you enjoy our little piece of Wagner’s masterwork. YOUR THE SKYLIGHT RING TICKET STUB IS WORTH One per check. Food only. Valid until June 21, 2015. The Ring is one of the greatest compositional triumphs in opera, and we hope that our take on the 14 hour epic will give you a different insight into the show. I hope that one day you’ll have the opportunity to see a full Ring live. It is a truly memorable experience. In putting a season together that focuses on fairy tales and fantasy, the challenge became finding the right piece for the Studio Theatre. Fairy tales and fantasy tend to be stories on a grand scale, after all. My hope was to give you multiple visions of fairy tales: a traditional fairy tale in Cinderella, an American fairy tale with Wizard of Oz, a new vision on an old tale with Once on this Island, a sci-fi/fantasy tale with The Snow Dragon, and traditional fairy tales re-told with Into the Woods. It finally hit us that we should use the Studio Theatre to perform the most epic of operatic fairy tales - one of the best traditions of Skylight Music Theatre - taking a traditional opera or musical but looking at it in a way that no other company can. In looking at a project like condensing The Ring, I knew we needed someone with a keen dramatic mind who also loves opera. Having worked with Danny Brylow as a performer and subsequently as an assistant director, I knew that he could take the project on. He immediately understood the challenge of treating Wagner’s work with respect but also that reducing the timescale of such an epic would automatically creates some comedic moments. It marks a great moment in a company’s history when they finally take on their first Ring Cycle. Houston Grand Opera is in the midst of their first Ring right now. Seattle Opera has done a number of Ring cycles. We are extremely proud for Skylight to join those ranks in our first production of a Ring Cycle - in a way that only Skylight can bring it to you… in two hours with 4 singers. Thank you for being a part of our exciting season of fairy tales. We look forward to seeing you at Into the Woods, our final show of the 2014-15 season. Season tickets for the 201516 season are already on sale. It is a season that champions women and their journeys. Highlights include Puccini’s Tosca, My Fair Lady, and Pirates of Penzance. Thank you for being a part of our exciting season of fairy tales, and thank you for supporting Skylight Music Theatre. The Skylight Ring 3 SCENES Act I 1. Alberich, a “dweeby little dwarf,” flirts with them, but they reject his advances. He overhears them talking about a ring which grants the bearer limitless powers if he will forsake love. Embittered by their mockery, Alberich curses love and steals the ring. Fricka, the queen of the gods laments her husband Wotan’s decision to sell her sister Freia to the giants, Fasolt and Fafner, in exchange for building their castle. The giants arrive and take Freia as payment, but without Freia tending to her magical golden apples, Wotan and Fricka lose their immortality and begin to age. Loge, the demigod of fire, suggests that he and Wotan go in search of the legendary ring - the giants might let Freia go in exchange for the ring and its powers. Meanwhile, using the ring’s powers, Alberich creates a magic beanie, which allows him to shape-shift. Wotan and Loge arrive and capture Alberich, forcing him to exchange the ring and the beanie for his freedom. Crushed by his loss, Alberich curses the ring: death to all who possess it. Wotan gives the giants the ring (and the beanie) in exchange for Freia’s freedom. The giants fight about who should possess the ring, and Fafner kills Fasolt. Using the beanie to turn himself into a dragon, Fafner goes off to hoard the ring for himself. Wotan fears that Alberich will somehow re-gain the ring and use it to take over the world, and so decides he must get it back from Fafner. However, he had agreed to give Fafner the ring in exchange for building his castle; regaining the ring himself would mean breaking his contract with the giant. Wotan resolves this dilemma by fathering two mortal children named Siegmund and Sieglinde to attain it for him. In an attempt to interfere with Wotan’s plan, Alberich disguises himself as a biker dude named Hunding, and kidnaps Sieglinde, forcing her to become his child bride. In the meantime, Wotan thrusts an enchanted sword into a tree near Alberich’s house, enchanting it so that only his son Siegmund is able to remove it. He hopes that Siegmund will eventually use the sword to slay Fafner and obtain the ring before Alberich can. Years later, Wotan has fathered nine more daughters known as the Valkyries; warrior maidens who gather the souls of fallen heroes for their father to build an army should Alberich ever recover the ring. The twins have also been reunited when Siegmund removed the sword from the tree. Despite the fact that they are siblings, Siegmund and Sieglinde fall in love. This outrages Fricka, who, as the goddess of marriage, is appalled by adultery and incest. She enlists the aid of Alberich (whom she thinks to be Hunding) in punishing the twins for their crimes, and a battle in which Siegmund will be killed ensues. Fricka insists that Wotan command Brünnhilde- the favorite of his nine daughters- to defend Alberich in the upcoming battle. Wotan reluctantly agrees, but Brünnhilde is so moved by Siegmund’s love for his sister that she defies her father’s command, and defends Siegmund instead. Just as Siegmund is about to strike the fatal blow, Wotan appears and breaks the sword, allowing Siegmund to be slain. Brünnhilde flees with Sieglinde and Siegmund’s broken sword to a mountaintop, where she prophesies that the sword will be re-forged and used to slay Fafner by Siegfried, The Skylight Ring 5 SYNOPSIS c o n t. the unborn child of Siegmund and Sieglinde. Furious with Brünnhilde for defying his command, Wotan punishes her by stripping her of her immortality and putting her into a magic sleep from which she can only be awoken by a fearless hero. To ensure that the only most valiant of men is able to reach her, Wotan surrounds Brünnhilde’s rock with a blazing ring of fire. Later in a new disguise, Alberich, dressed as a kindly blacksmith, comes upon Sieglinde, about to give birth. Sieglinde dies in childbirth and Alberich takes possession of the infant Siegfried and the broken pieces of the enchanted sword. Act II Disguised as Mime the Blacksmith, Alberich raises Siegfried as his own child, planning all the while to use him in his continuing plot to re-gain the ring. Under the pretense of teaching him fear, Alberich convinces Siegfried to re-forge the sword and slay Fafner, still a vicious dragon. With the sword whole once again, the two head off to the woods, where Alberich reveals his plan to poison Siegfried once the dragon has been killed. Siegfried slays Fafner and takes the magic beanie and the ring as the prizes for his victory. When Siegfried draws his sword from the corpse, his hands are burned by the dragon’s hot blood, and he instinctively puts them to his mouth to cool them. Upon tasting the blood, he gains the power to understand the song of a Forest Bird, who has overheard Alberich’s sinister plot and suggests he escape to a mountain where a beautiful woman is waiting for him to wake her up. Siegfried climbs the mountain, crosses the ring of fire, wakes Brünnhilde from her slumber, and the two instantly fall in love. Before he leaves to continue exploring, Siegfried gives Brünnhilde the ring as a token of his love. In a final effort to obtain the ring, Alberich disguises himself as Hagen, a royal advisor, in the court of King Gunther and his sister Gutrune. Siegfried arrives, and Alberich gives him a love potion causing him to fall instantly in love with Queen Gutrune. Alberich then manipulates Siegfried into using the magic beanie to disguise himself as King Gunther and to cross the ring of fire to bring back Brünnhilde as his wife. In the process, Siegfried steals the ring he has given her. Back in the court, Brünnhilde is shocked to see Siegfried, now divested of disguise. But when she sees the stolen ring on Siegfried’s finger, she puts it all together. Feeling completely betrayed, she reveals to Alberich that Siegfried is vulnerable to attack from behind. Bolstered with this new information, Alberich distracts Siegfried and fatally wounds him while his back is turned. Meanwhile, Wotan’s ravens, Thought and Memory report to Brünnhilde what has happened and before Alberich can obtain the ring from Siegfried’s body, they quickly recover it. In his rage Alberich also kills Gunther, and then Gutrune dies of grief as a result. The ravens present Brünnhilde with the ring. She resolves to return the ring to the Rhine, burn Siegfried’s body in a funeral pyre which will reach to Wotan’s castle, and commit suicide by joining Siegfried on the pyre. Alberich narrates the events that happened offstage: Brünnhilde carried out her plan, the gods perished, the ring was lost in the Rhine forever, and the decades-long struggle for the ring has finally come to a close…or has it? 6 Skylight Music Theatre CAST Alberich, a dwarf........................................................................................................Robert Frankenberry Woglinde, a Rhinemaiden .............................................................................................................Erin Sura Wellgunde, a Rhinemaiden .............................................................................................
