Call for Participation // Summer School Cultural and Natural Heritage on the First Cataract of the Nile Cologne / Aswan - August 24 – September 13 2015 Organizing Institutions UoC Forum “Cultural Heritage in Africa and Asia” University of Cologne, Egyptology Department University of Cologne, IMES Aswan University The Nubia Museum Aswan Protectorates Office, EEAA The above mentioned organizing institutions are pleased to invite you to apply for participation in the Summer School Cultural and Natural Heritage on the First Cataract of the Nile from 24 August-13 September 2015 in Cologne (first week) and Aswan (second and third week). Based on the rich cultural and natural heritage of Aswan and the region of the first cataract of the Nile – partly a World Heritage site - the Summer School will introduce to the current discussions and critical approaches in the field of heritage studies. Topics will be, among others: heritage law, heritage, cultural diversity and human rights, new concepts of biocultural heritage, tangible vs. intangible heritage and material culture, methodologies for heritage research etc. Three thematic blocks will prepare for exploratory field research projects in small groups: 1. Religious heritage – living and dead 2. The first cataract region as cultural landscape 3. Daboka – the camel trade and its impact on natural and cultural heritage. Who do we expect to apply? We are looking for advanced undergraduate students (final BA or BSc terms) or MA/MSc students from any discipline with a relation to heritage on the first cataract of the Nile. Students should have a personal interest in the topic and be aware of its multidisciplinary character. Official language of the summer school is English; a high level of English proficiency is expected. To apply for this program you must be a student of Aswan University, the University of Cologne, or you should be supported by one of the other Aswan partners. Travel Costs and other Expenses Students from Cologne cover their own travel costs to Aswan, meals and additional activities not included in the program. Accommodation in Aswan and all activities of the program will be covered by the program. Travel costs for students from Aswan and accommodation in Cologne as well as all activities of the program will be covered by the program.
