of existing building commissioning for the environment, occupants,
operations staff, and overall ownership costs. Viewers will be able to
recognize the varied scopes of commissioning, when to apply comprehensive versus focused commissioning, and best practices in existing
building commissioning specifications & contracting.
This FREE webcast will be broadcast live via the internet. Watch this page

golden gate chapter President’s Message, MARCH 2015
Happy Spring, Golden Gate ASHRAE (and Happy March Madness, basketball
enthusiasts)!
We have been a bit remiss in not including ASHRAE Society announcements in our
newsletter for the last few months. There are a few interesting things that ASHRAE
volunteers and staff have been working on; and I would like to share them here.
ASHRAE and IAQA Approve Consolidation
You probably saw an email from Society about this, but in case you missed it, ASHRAE
and the Indoor Air Quality Association are officially united. The intent to merge was
announced last year and the consolidation was approved at ASHRAE’s recent 2015 Winter Conference in Chicago.
For more information: https://www.ashrae.org/news/2015/ashrae-iaqa-approve-consolidation
New ASHRAE Job Board
Golden Gate is always happy to post job ads for local companies (http://ggashrae.org/announcements.php ),
and welcomes job seekers to our meetings for great networking opportunities. Now, job seekers and companies
with opportunities have a newly-improved national resource – the ASHRAE Job Board. A couple local companies
and a bunch more from our region are already using http://jobs.ashrae.org. The press release outlines some of
the benefits to both sides of the job search: https://www.ashrae.org/news/2015/looking-for-the-right-candidatelook-to-ashrae-s-new-job-board .
Kent Peterson awarded the John F. James International Award
Region X member, and one of Golden Gate’s favorite speakers, Kent Peterson (ASHRAE Presidential Member,
Fellow ASHRAE) was awarded the John F. James International Award. This award recognizes a member who
has done the most to enhance the Society’s international presence. Do you know anybody that Golden Gate
should nominate for this award next year? If so, please let us know! Email Annie.Foster-Courtney@wspgroup.
com and erik@kolderupconsulting.com
If you’re interested in more Society news, check out the ASHRAE Pressroom: https://ashrae.org/news/2015
Finally, I would like to say a special thank-you to the dozen of you who responded to my last President’s Message.
I appreciate you taking the time to read the newsletter and respond. I’m going to continue using the “blog”
layout for the online message, so please keep commenting!

historian
Tom Gilbertson, Chapter Historian
“What’s on your bookshelf?”
Historically….every engineer had a desk and a book shelf….and a slide rule…and a couple of handbooks….and some drafting tools….and a scale…and set of triangles…and
a few templates….Well…those days are gone forever…..but what concerns me is, with
only a “cloud-based” office…and a monitor…(or maybe you can do all of your “engineering” from your cell phone…and not even be bothered with a monitor)….BUT… where are
you gong to store all of your souvenirs?...the ones that you accumulate as an ASHRAE, nee
ASHVE-engineer?
Souvenirs like that 1939 ASHVE – Guide….the one that has the chapter on Gravity Warm
Air Furnace Systems…and when you read the ads…you realize that very BIG business for ASHVE members was an industry that is now almost entirely gone from the United States…the textile business….lots of air washers, and big air handling equipment…... Like the firm of “Air & Refrigeration” of Valley Cottage, New York….the chief engineer was a man by
the name of Henry Dutcher …. reported to be a direct descendent of Hendrik Hudson…not a big deal until you realize that
his great-great-great- great grandfather discovered, and named, Hudson Bay…We represented “Air & Refrigeration”…and
were lucky enough to stumble on to an order in 1969 that took 63 rail cars to deliver the air handlers….The building was
3,000 feet long…and Mr. Dutcher personally.

What Multiple Metrics Mean for Designers, Owners and Builders:
LEED, the WELL Building Standard and the Living Building Challenge
Green building performance ratings are increasingly being used by building industry professionals and government agencies for benchmarking and design. While LEED has become widely adopted over the past decade,
there are now numerous iterations available along with newer alternatives.
This half-day symposium will feature leading experts who will discuss existing and emerging rating systems,
including the benefits, processes, and best practices. A moderated panel discussion will allow session participants to engage with thought leaders and to deliberate on aspects of rating systems.
